Yes, Archer is Shiro, but he is one of the possible Future Shiro who become Counter Guardian EMIYA, where he became dissilusioned of Shiro's creed of saving everyone. EMIYA was killed, executed by one of the people he saved before. So EMIYA vow to open his past self eyes of the futility of his creed. And the Anime is taking only one path of the three path of the game. Better watch the other path movie, Fate/Unlimited Blade Works.

Actually Archer did become a hero but his own ideals betrayed him. One of the people he saved used him as a scapegoat and he was publicly executed. Gaia made him become a Counter Guardian(Just like Saber) and he is forced to save the world again and again, however it's always humans bringing destruction, so he lives killing humans again and again. He figured his only way out was to show up in the grail war again and kill himself creating a time paradox.Though even that wouldn't save him

@Meehuuu If you do see the anime, they did hinted that archer is emiya, like the time where archer went fighting berserker, he told emiya some stuff, and how the flash back showed that time are related shirou. AND!! do notice at the end of the fight, archer said "Ilya" which causes ilya to be shocked as no one calls her that except shirou (and perhaps tohsaka if story proceeds) , cause ilya once told shirou to call her that.

They never mention it in the anime, only in the visual novel game.

Yeah, in the fate route his identity isn't revealed either, but seeing that the anime pulls a few things from the other routes (for example, Shirou projecting Archer's swords, and "somewhat" Dark Sakura), they should have mentione dit at some point. I guess it's a move to make people more curious and find out bout the visual novel and get it. Thats what I did, hehe.

Thats how I got into Visual Novels, too (Though, mine was through Clannad). Then I moved to Tsukihime(My favorite so far) and now I'm at Fate/Stay Night. I'm actually installing Fate/Stay Night (with voice) right now (I played the UBW route on my DS with VNDS).

They may do a bit here and there for the translation, but they're not focusing on it, as they're totally concentrating on releasing Tsukhime 2 in one year, as well as a few other projects. shirou(current)'s chant for UBW is different than archer(future). and it seems that only the shirou(current) can trace caliburn(saber's sword of stone). anywho all of the blades made by tracing are downgraded since the user can never copy something perfectly by just seeing it. but i think if shirou/archer touched the sword and use reinforce to understand its structure they are capable of creating perfect copies, even excalibur or enuma eishi

Tracing is the advanced form of Reinforcing. Sort of like being able to Reinforce without having to actually touch the object. However there is a condition that requires that the object had to be created from some form of material that comes from the planet itself. Enuma Elish was created from divine material and thus is not capable of being traced because it is not made up from anything on the physical realm.

I haven't played the game yet, but i have seen the anime about 4 times (the episode that features ubw about 30 times). I'm fairly certain that tracing is not an advanced form of reinforcement. shirou is able to reinforce something that he has copied, making a weapon equal if not stronger than the original (at least with Kanshō and Bakuya). The arrow he shot was a modified version of Caladbolg II.

Some of the weapons Archer uses in UBW are from Gil's Gate, but in UBW Archer can summon any weapon he's seen (With the exception of Enuma Elish) and use them by copying the memories of the person who originaly used that weapon. So UBW>Gate of Babolyon
