aww man i wanna go to glider encampment but im still too young and i havent gone on a glider o-flight yet. must be fun using nothing but wind, thermal and spoilers to fly.
I really hope I go to National Glider Academy this year. Had review boards today, and I have no clue how it went. They said I did well, but I don't believe them.
As a CAP cadet you are entitled to 10 o-rides (orientation rides). 5 powered, 5 unpowered (glider). If you want actual flight training you can go to a glider training squadron if there is one near you, or you can attend a summer fligh academy. You'll have to pay for those, but the rates are a lot cheaper than at a normal flight school! good luck in the CAP!
simple. the wake is the turbulent air coming from the prop. it sort of goes downward from the towplane. hold each step for about 5 seconds to show the CFIG that u can box the wake. down throught the wake, left still n low tow.maintain the left position to normal tow. go to the right of the tow plane, hold right position and go down. weather cock to low tow and up through the wake.
When aero tows were a new method of launching gliders no one new for sure what would happen if the glider entered the wake of the tow plane. So when a gulider pilot wanted to go to low tow they boxed the wake to avoid it. Now it just helps to build pilot skills.
You have to know how to spell. Without chatspeak (I'm only kidding). Yes, you do have to be smart, cause your dealing with people's lives. Their not asking You to be einsten or anything, but you do need to have common sense, loyalty, and determintaion. With that, you should do fine :D. If you got any questions send me a message.
That tow plane, a maule, is a STOL a/c and designed for slow flight. Flying a slow, steep climb, gets us altitude ASAP. If we have a line break we want as much altitude as possible to work with. Altitude= options. Also, since we stay within the airport's airspace we don't have a whole lot of room to work with.
thats interesting, I did not know CAP used Maule's. We tow behind a 172 so at 60 kts. we're only climbimg at 300-500 FPM. I definitely agree with your theory for gliders: Altitude=options...so true. Great video!
Thanks. What I didn't mention was that, unfortunately, CAP decided that the Maule didn't perform to its liking and has since sold all of them. So we now tow with a 182 :-(
hey KVNY, as a glider student pilot myself in CAP from Minnesota I'm just curious why you climb so quickly and slowly. Above 1000 FPM at 55ktn's? thats crazy! the tow plane is literally 5kts from stalling! Maybe it has to do with the fact your basically 40ASL? just curious
Love this. I will be leaving on Saturday to staff our Glider (encampment) School Here is Pennsylvania. Did it last year also, and although it was alot of work and long days, it was such a blast.
Mast Cadet squadrons meet once a week. The length of the meetings and the night of the week will very from squadron, but the average is 2 to 4 hours. And, of course there are weekend and summer activities as well.
I remember when i did this! Its pretty amazing, there are no words to describe the whistling sound and the view. When i went on the motor ride, this kid next to me upchucked a chewy bar.haha
I'm a student glider pilot and have soloed, but in this video my instructor was flying from the backseat. As for being afaid of heights, i wouldn't worry about it. I'm not a big fan of heights either and flying doesnt bother me!
Sure you could. All you have to do is listen to your instructors and not do anything stupid! Like with anything be prepared to mess up a couple times (but hopefully not too badly lol), learn from your mistakes and get back in the saddle/cockpit.
I haven't had the opportunity to be around the gliders - I know that IAWG has one (I used to be a member of the 78th, in fact!). I am a member of the NEWG (Offutt Composite SQ) and NCR Staff. We have been talking to IAWG about doing some glider O-rides, in western Iowa. Take care!
Our rope is farely standard, at 250 feet i beleive. Different lengths of rope will of course require different towing styles, but, as far as i know, 250 is pretty average. And yes, i still glide. I've got about 18hrs and am working toward my private glider liscense :-)
Ah, i just looked at your videos and noticed that you glide too. I guess you guys just use shorter tow ropes there than we do here. But then again, i've only been to two glider ports, this one and one other, so i dunno!
I love flying. I love CAP. I also like gliding, and have a lot of fun doing. Looks like a good video. Only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 5 is because you play holiday at the beginning. don't put anything greenday into a CAP video.

MacBooker4444 4 years ago
Thats in powered aircraft. In gliders you can solo at 14 and get your license at 16.

wow. cool! i also have another question, i am joing the CAP squad near me and i was wondering how many powered flights can you have?

DEOXYS987 4 years ago
It releases the rope that tows the glider once you have reached desired altitude.
Knuckles6twofour 4 years ago
Right, if you look closely at 5:55, you can see it slide out and then back in as the rope is released and we bank away from the towplane.

whoever flew was way too fast on approach, can not box the wake if they tried. not a bad vid tho.

timbit2011 4 years ago
simple. the wake is the turbulent air coming from the prop. it sort of goes downward from the towplane. hold each step for about 5 seconds to show the CFIG that u can box the wake. down throught the wake, left still n low tow.maintain the left position to normal tow. go to the right of the tow plane, hold right position and go down. weather cock to low tow and up through the wake.
pilotsrbest 4 years ago
Right. It has no real purpose other to demonstrate to the instructor that you are in control of the aircraft and are capable of maneuvering it.
KVNY 4 years ago
oh...i see
timbit2011 4 years ago
