  • 3:25 because who sad rockstars can't dance;]

  • please forgive the spelling from my last bit but...imortality..through a video clip with a sublime tune that we might hope to write in someonelsess dreams aint bad for what might life deal for you...tony ..you were a visionary....many thanks.

  • it seems that tony was trying at the time to be at the cutting edge of music and show us in his opinion the next big thing.......little did he know this peice of tape ..with ian with hands on hips would become the video that would give him and ian ...imortalaty.

  • @SomaShroud

uh, this is the original. know your music history.

  • @SomaShroud joy division is a band of 1978...

  • @SomaShroud What a fag

  • @RockFFTW94 Takes one to know one, Fag.

  • @SomaShroud Go troll somewhere else, because it aint fooling no one.

  • @Linear500 Trolling would imply I am purposefully attempting to agitate a certain individual or group. I am merely stating a historical fact.

  • @SomaShroud You are trolling mate, haha, and you know it. You give it away when you say 'historical fact'. Wench.

  • @SomaShroud Is this highly developed sarcasm?

  • @WhitstableWilliams If by sarcasm you mean, "Truth." Then yes, I am being honest.

  • @SomaShroud Wow, those great innovators known as The Killers must have had some kind of reverse premonition, then...

  • @WhitstableWilliams ...Probably, how would they know they know they would be ripped off though...

  • @SomaShroud Now I'm really confused...Joy Division: 1978. The Killers: 2005. Explain...

  • @WhitstableWilliams F_F = \frac{\Phi_C}{\Phi_L}

Where FF is Flux Factor, ΦC Capacitive Flux and ΦL is Inductive Flux.

C-IVI-L. ie in a capacitive load "C", the current "I" leads the voltage "V" and vice verse.

    Get it...?

  • @SomaShroud Phew, that clears everything up. I was getting worried...

  • @WhitstableWilliams You're welcome.

  • @SomaShroud haha are you fucking joking are you blind as well as thick you can clearly see this video is pre 1980 so yeah joy division did copy the killers and to fool everyone they done it 25yrs earlier

  • @ammohazemike At least you understand that this is a blatent ripoff of The Killers.

  • who the fuck would dislike this?

  • To say bands of today copy Joy Division does not do justice to the true importance of what Joy Division was, They will never be copied...but their influence has been and will be felt for many many years.

  • they never die. they live in me

  • they never die. they live in me

  • That bass!

  • nice ending

  • Ian Curtis is dead, Tony Wilson is dead, Martin Hannett is dead, Rob Gretton is dead, and Peter Hook is dead to everyone.

  • @CeleryMan3 Ian Curtis has all the soul of a bingo caller....

  • 237 people who need to get a clue.

  • That comment on the Rat Pack is spot on. There's imitation, with no substance, and then, there's the real thing....

  • thanks tony wilson r.i.p.

  • wow ian took his music seriously

  • I came within 2 weeks of seeing them in toronto . Talk about bad news .

Cheers to all who play this stuff .

  • Pure Class! Of Madchester. > DJ(UNITE)MC - UK.

  • Joy Division is fucking amazing! Check out our version of shadowplay. We are a band from Germany called Space. I know that its different and probably not very good. But the meaning of a cover for me is to make it by your own way. Greetings to all the Joy Division lovers outside!

  • Flowers sang it better... but Joy Division's playing style of this song is epic. I like both version versions. That's some sexy bassin' in the bg though.

  • Who is this stupid Joe Division guy? He can't sing like Justin Beiber.

  • "I just love Joy Division"

thats what every comment should say!!

  • Newer bands need to do more drugs

  • @CaptainPommby You're a fucking retard. Ian Curtis didn't do drugs.

  • @slangshotstudios actually he is right, Ian did drink and use drugs it in the documentary, he didnt use them most of his perfomances I think thats what you mean, but its hard to say he didnt use drugs if he died of an overdose,so chill out guy, get your facts right

  • @beverlyskates he didnt die from overdose dude

  • @beverlyskates Ian committed suicide by hanging himself, so yeah, chill out guy, get your facts right

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but to me, this is the beginning of the modern trend of rock music, aka sounding like a boring, uninspired local band and yet becoming famous off of artsy-ness and quirkiness, instead of actual songwriting ability.

  • @justanotheroutcast66 I can see what you mean but I think Joy Division actually have something - A lot of todays indie bands copy this Joy Division style/artsy-ness/quirkiness but in my opinion do a bad job. Some do produce good stuff though - eg. The Kooks or The Drums.

  • @corpsemunger What's your opinion on the Strokes? Every time I hear Reptilia I get really close to crying tears of boredom

  • @justanotheroutcast66 Yeah they don't hold my attention that well, I might listen to a song and like it but I don't keep coming back for more.

  • @justanotheroutcast66 : You're wrong. Musically and lyrically this band is way better than 90% of everything that was being done by that time (has that been done ever since).

  • @signeponge Just because they were better than what was going on in their time doesn't necessarily mean they were that great. Even during that period I feel like NOFX, Rancid, and Nirvana were all more talented musically and lyrically than this band. What do you think?

  • @justanotheroutcast66 : The bands you mentioned are not at all from the same period (Ian Curtis died in 1980!) and, sorry, but I definitely don't think that any of those even belong to the same category as Joy Division. From their contemporaries, I believe that only the likes of The Clash, The Birthday Party, The Fall, The Pop Group, Wire, Pere Ubu, Magazine or The Saints can be placed within the same league.

  • Manchester and the rest of NW England was white and Socialist in the 1970s with a sense of camaraderie. Thatcher came along and ruined it, using class warfare to divide people and destroyed the industrial base. Then Blair came along much later and opened the floodgates of immigration to change the country irrevocably.

I think Curtis would have hated what has become of England.

  • Joy Division is portrayed as a band influenced by the economic consequences of recession and unemployment. In fact when they formed in the mid-70s there was nearly full employment. Curtis worked for the DSS which supported him and his wife until he left to become a full time band member. Anyone could get a job then.

  • @GamesFrontiers that's very interesting, thank you

  • God save television and keep the programs pure.

  • to the depths of the ocean where all hope sank searching for you

moving through the silence without motion waiting for you

  • love how its got that classic rock riff

  • I love this music so much

  • THIS SONG IS SO FUCKING COOL!

  • love this and the killers...

  • Someday i will kill myself just like Ian did

    ,i know i will...

  • @prozacpeople and not a single fuck was given that day

  • @prozacpeople ARE YOU NUTS????

  • fucking brilliant

  • If that asshole fucker would go to sleep i've had the chance of going for a relaxing cigarette. Im talking bout my dad!

  • Clearly Ian learned how to dance by watching James Brown.

  • 233 people are dumb as fuck

  • @MayIRemindYouSumtin Brag Much? Have you heard any other songs by The Killers, or did you just listen to Shadow Play? Because the way Brandon Flowers sings in that one is way different than any other song.

  • @keyboardqueen98 The Killers are to Joy Division as Michael Buble is to The Rat Pack - the same thing, only minus the cool, the originality, the sex, the danger, the style, the quality, the depth, and historical significance.

  • @alna1287 By far the greatest comment I have ever read on Youtube in my insignificant, short period of time liven on this planet.

  • Ian Curtis tries to dance..... the dance is Ian Curtis!!..

  • kapote tous kathgorisan gia nazistes logw onomatos!!!

  • the man presenting this tony wilson was the northwests john peel r.i.p tony

  • Stop listening to this shit, and listen to the ORIGINAL SONG, of Rory Gallagher

  • @ccardosofelipe0427 this the original

  • @ccardosofelipe0427 that's a completely different song numbnuts. If it's got a different riff, different bass and different lyrics it usually means it's a different song.

  • @ccardosofelipe0427 : Epic fail: it's not even the same song. And please don't compare Joy Division with cheesy music for hillbillies.

  • the best band in the whole world

  • @DziadekMroz6666 he makes his epic dance

  • Punk brushed one load of shit away..Then came JD to deal with the rest...

  • I think Ian knows how to dougie.

  • love this song.

  • Im new to rock music but I must say that Joy Division is definitely one of my favorite bands to listen to. Its a shame they only had two albums.

  • @keyboardqueen98 THANK YOU!

  • The original is better than that cover by the Killers. No disrespect to them but the Killers recorded that as a "just some song" and original (no matter if it's the album version or this one recorded at Granada studio) always gets the shivers up my spine. Truly great!

  • I first heard of joy division because I read the crow haha :D

  • I found out about the band by watching Control, just because I simply wanted to watch a movie about music.

  • Long Live IAN. fan since the 80's.

  • i never even new the killers covered this wtf they cant hold a candle to ians writing and the bands playing abilities NEVER.

  • The Killers version is awesome too!

  • @imthemanbro thank you

  • Just out of curiosity, is the presenter at the start of this video Tony Wilson? Soon to be head of Factory Records as depicted by Steve Coogan in 24 Hour Party People?

  • This is where what we knew as "grunge" started. Bands like Joy Division (though from the UK), the Fastbacks, etc. that started it in the late 70's Then moved to bands like Room Nine, Skin Yard, Green River, Soundgarden, and Malfunkshun, What the mainstream came to know was Mudhoney, Melvins, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, and of course...Nirvana. People don't realize how far back that genre went or how deeply rooted in rock culture the Pacific Northwest is.

  • @WarmothGuitarist ...what the hell are you talking about?

  • @ThePictoucounty Just how much music a band like Joy Division inspired through the decades.

  • @WarmothGuitarist ....right. so it would make sense for me to call Robert Johnson metalcore, yes?

  • @ThePictoucounty Whatever, kid...

  • it seems like there is something more pure about seeing music back in the day. if wanted to find this recording in america im sure you had to look very hard for it. im sure there were a few people who were amazed by seeing this back in the day.

today in our age all i had to do is walk to my computer, open up a tab, go to youtube and type "shadowplay". but im sure all the people who had to do some serious searching still finds watching this more rewarding than i can ever imagine.

    rock on

  • I love joy division and this music was very popular for its time, however the killers did modernize it and make it there own. And in some respect made it better

  • @Rik81ful Joy Division and Suck cannot be in the same sentence It just can't its like adding 0 plus zero and it giving 5

  • @ninjaxhayabusa I disagree, how about the sentence: It sucks that i will never be able to see Joy division perform live.

  • Fuck my boss I wanna watch Ian Curtis dance!!!

  • Why do people get so upset when someone covers a song?

  • cool~~~~

  • RIP Ian and thank you for your vision and inspiration to so many that came after you in the alternative music world

  • I'me here because i thought that it was a Rory Gallagher's song cover...

  • music is always awesome when it is from the heart...this was truly heartfelt and beautiful...God Bless Ian...

  • the singer for joy division has a disorder of epilespy so dat means if he sees bright lights he will have seizure thats why he plays in dark rooms but the darkness goes with his music ......coool!

  • 228 dislikes...Fuck off to these people!!!

    C'mon!!That's Joy Division...

Most of rock n' roll bands found their roots from this band!!!

    Forget my english,i'm french...

  • i agree entirely with 11 raljr 11 but why is oasis so representative of manchester/

apart from the phenomena of joy division,we had james, the buzzcocks, john cooper clarke, who where there long before oasis!... i gues no other band could touch what jd touched so instead we got surely liam & arrogant noel to contend with!... sorry! but it had to b said! gimme ian curtis as a manchester icon any day,yes not forgetting the footballers as well.

  • So proud to be from Salford ^_^
