From their contemporaries, I believe that only the likes of The Clash, The Birthday Party, The Fall, The Pop Group, Wire, Pere Ubu, Magazine or The Saints can be placed within the same league.

Joy Division is portrayed as a band influenced by the economic consequences of recession and unemployment. In fact when they formed in the mid-70s there was nearly full employment. Curtis worked for the DSS which supported him and his wife until he left to become a full time band member. Anyone could get a job then.

This is where what we knew as "grunge" started. Bands like Joy Division (though from the UK), the Fastbacks, etc. that started it in the late 70's Then moved to bands like Room Nine, Skin Yard, Green River, Soundgarden, and Malfunkshun, What the mainstream came to know was Mudhoney, Melvins, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, and of course...Nirvana. People don't realize how far back that genre went or how deeply rooted in rock culture the Pacific Northwest is.
