@SomaShroud haha are you fucking joking are you blind as well as thick you can clearly see this video is pre 1980 so yeah joy division did copy the killers and to fool everyone they done it 25yrs earlier
To say bands of today copy Joy Division does not do justice to the true importance of what Joy Division was, They will never be copied...but their influence has been and will be felt for many many years.
Joy Division is fucking amazing! Check out our version of shadowplay. We are a band from Germany called Space. I know that its different and probably not very good. But the meaning of a cover for me is to make it by your own way. Greetings to all the Joy Division lovers outside!
Flowers sang it better... but Joy Division's playing style of this song is epic. I like both version versions. That's some sexy bassin' in the bg though.
@slangshotstudios actually he is right, Ian did drink and use drugs it in the documentary, he didnt use them most of his perfomances I think thats what you mean, but its hard to say he didnt use drugs if he died of an overdose,so chill out guy, get your facts right
Correct me if I'm wrong, but to me, this is the beginning of the modern trend of rock music, aka sounding like a boring, uninspired local band and yet becoming famous off of artsy-ness and quirkiness, instead of actual songwriting ability.
@justanotheroutcast66 I can see what you mean but I think Joy Division actually have something - A lot of todays indie bands copy this Joy Division style/artsy-ness/quirkiness but in my opinion do a bad job. Some do produce good stuff though - eg. The Kooks or The Drums.
@justanotheroutcast66 : You're wrong. Musically and lyrically this band is way better than 90% of everything that was being done by that time (has that been done ever since).
@signeponge Just because they were better than what was going on in their time doesn't necessarily mean they were that great. Even during that period I feel like NOFX, Rancid, and Nirvana were all more talented musically and lyrically than this band. What do you think?
@justanotheroutcast66 : The bands you mentioned are not at all from the same period (Ian Curtis died in 1980!) and, sorry, but I definitely don't think that any of those even belong to the same category as Joy Division. From their contemporaries, I believe that only the likes of The Clash, The Birthday Party, The Fall, The Pop Group, Wire, Pere Ubu, Magazine or The Saints can be placed within the same league.
@justanotheroutcast66 : And saying that NOFX, Rancid, and Nirvana were all more talented musically and lyrically than Joy Division can only be taken as a really bad joke. Did you ever actually hear "Closer"?!?!
Manchester and the rest of NW England was white and Socialist in the 1970s with a sense of camaraderie. Thatcher came along and ruined it, using class warfare to divide people and destroyed the industrial base. Then Blair came along much later and opened the floodgates of immigration to change the country irrevocably.
I think Curtis would have hated what has become of England.
Joy Division is portrayed as a band influenced by the economic consequences of recession and unemployment. In fact when they formed in the mid-70s there was nearly full employment. Curtis worked for the DSS which supported him and his wife until he left to become a full time band member. Anyone could get a job then.
@MayIRemindYouSumtin Brag Much? Have you heard any other songs by The Killers, or did you just listen to Shadow Play? Because the way Brandon Flowers sings in that one is way different than any other song.
@keyboardqueen98 The Killers are to Joy Division as Michael Buble is to The Rat Pack - the same thing, only minus the cool, the originality, the sex, the danger, the style, the quality, the depth, and historical significance.
@ccardosofelipe0427 that's a completely different song numbnuts. If it's got a different riff, different bass and different lyrics it usually means it's a different song.
If you think ANY mainstream "pop" band "is better" than Joy Division, you clearly know nothing about Joy Division or their history. Therefore your comment is automatically null and void, and you should go play in traffic. :) xx
I know, i thought that too at first. but when you listen to joy division more you realize their genius and that ian's voice was as essential as hookys basslines. soon you will know the world young one :)
@Melkbeats the killers are awesome they posted a new video in 2011 december and there working on a new album right now so killers are not tragic and @keyboardqueen98 killers fans do have to stick together
@BrandonFlowers287 Mate the Killers are beyond awful, just because American's are miles behind England in terms of music. That doesn't mean The Killers can be excused for doing something done over 30 years ago with more class, meaning and of course originality. If you want to listen to a band who produce a copied/manufactured sound then feel free. Joy Division inspired The Killers, not the other way around.
The original is better than that cover by the Killers. No disrespect to them but the Killers recorded that as a "just some song" and original (no matter if it's the album version or this one recorded at Granada studio) always gets the shivers up my spine. Truly great!

the singer for joy division has a disorder of epilespy so dat means if he sees bright lights he will have seizure thats why he plays in dark rooms but the darkness goes with his music ......coool!
i agree entirely with 11 raljr 11 but why is oasis so representative of manchester/
apart from the phenomena of joy division,we had james, the buzzcocks, john cooper clarke, who where there long before oasis!... i gues no other band could touch what jd touched so instead we got surely liam & arrogant noel to contend with!... sorry! but it had to b said! gimme ian curtis as a manchester icon any day,yes not forgetting the footballers as well.

the singer for joy division has a disorder of epilespy so dat means if he sees bright lights he will have seizure thats why he plays in dark rooms but the darkness goes with his music ......coool!

i agree entirely with 11 raljr 11 but why is oasis so representative of manchester/
apart from the phenomena of joy division,we had james, the buzzcocks, john cooper clarke, who where there long before oasis!... i gues no other band could touch what jd touched so instead we got surely liam & arrogant noel to contend with!... sorry! but it had to b said! gimme ian curtis as a manchester icon any day,yes not forgetting the footballers as well.
