For those who are spawning ideas on building a smoker such as this, please note, I wound up adding another 4" port on the rear of the firebox, and this solved a lot of troubles I was having keeping the temps up. After that mod, every 1/2 hr, I would throw on a shovelful of coals and be good to go. That being said, I eventually went to a gas smoker for the ease of use, and have since sold this unit. But it was a hell of a cooker while I had it.
