This is a variation of "Lever Knitting." check the video, "Lever Knitting the Yarn Harlot Way," it's different in the way the yarn is held.
Since knitting came to South Americans with Europeans and different people seem to knit in different ways, it would be interesting to find out who learned from whom.
interesting, cristina- I'll have to check it out. This is just what I was shown from a missionaries kid. They were around Lima I believe. I wonder if the ladies do it differently in different parts of the country?
Peruvian women knit with the working yarn on the left hand like continental and the right needle is right like you show holding like a pencil. You can check a very talented peruvian lady that as a channel here on you tube.
This is no different to the English way of knitting! This is the way I was taught to knit too . I thought Peruvian's tension their yard around the neck.
I'm an English pensioner and mum mum taught me to knit like this as a small child. I've just viewed the English method of knitting, different. I had no idea I was always knitting the Peruvian way. Oh well you learn something new everyday.
Thank you the instructions were clear and fully understandable any critics need to be glad there are people like you who have a genuine love for the craft and want to share it with the rest of the world ...
@themadsnail ;-) Thats just me. I probably wouldn't have explained in so much detail if I was putting it up for the whole community, I made the video a long time ago for a couple of friends of mine, and I wanted to be clear about what was going on. Hope it doesn't detract from the instructions.
what you are doing is just a different way of traditional english. the only diffrenece is you hold the yarn a diffrent way and the needle you still throw it like traditional english and when going fast it looks like your doing traditional english/ well thats my opinion its either that your doing traditional english or i am blind.
I've been trying for hours to learn this method. I find it very awkward and I fumble around with both needles. The knit stitch is a little easier to maneuver around than the purl stitch, which I find impossible to do. I've found that the Portuguese style of knitting is the easiest, both on the hands and the sanity.
I'm English. My Gran tought me this way, but I use index finger, not middle, to throw. Easy to knit too tight this way when you get fast. I often knit swatches that are too narrow, while row height is correct, because you leave little slack between sts when up to speed. I can manage 2 sts per second this way, until I need a rest! This method also works in an overhanded hold of R needle, but slower. Pencil hold works for crochet too, but be careful to keep sts tall enough to achieve gauge
Thanks for the great video. Can you show how to work with several inches of knitting on your needles. I can't seem to move the yarn along smoothly and I'm not clear on the best way to do it with all the "bulk".
Thanks very much for this video! I am going to apply it and it will help my knitting be faster. i hope you do put up more videos, you are a great teacher.
This was a fantastic video. I've never been able to purl for the life of me but I look forward to trying the way you've demonstrated here and will hope for the best!
I've been watching and rewatching several videos demonstrating this knitting style, and yours is by far the best! You explain and show the techniques so clearly. I hope you will make a video showing how to make eyelets. Demonstrating ribbing would also be great. Thanks again.
HI, your a great teacher! Thank you for sharing the peruvian knitting, seems to go faster and It looks easy too, love that! Im Peruvian and i didnt know bout this.
I agree. You are a great teacher. I have watched this video probably 10 times in the last 3 days. I am practicing. I would love to see more videos from you. Particularly, doing Peruvian knitting with a more finished product. Where is all of the fabric going in relation to you hand.
I knit in this style, and when my fabric grows in length, I let it fall over the thumb and hold onto the right needle through the layer of fabric. If you search Youtube for "english lever knitting", there are other videos showing a very similar style. Good luck!
OMGOOOOOSH!! I LOOOVE this technique. I tried knitting the eng. way but it was too frustrating & finally gave up. Since crochet is my primary craft a friend recommended continental. That was much better but still weird at times but THIIIIS!!! WOOOO!! It took me about a day to get used to working needles & yarn & I'm still playing with the best way to get a solid tension but I'm in love with this!!! Thank you sooooooooo much!!! Can't wait for more vids!!
Cool! I tried to do this... it didn't work so well for me, mainly because my needle doesn't really "slide" very well on my hand. I'm using metal needles. Do you think wood would work better? Also, is it hard to knit fair isle this way?
Just found your video a couple of days ago. Great job, enjoyed the detail and explanations. Could you please explain the differences when doing eyelets? The video stops just as you start to explain this.
It would be helpful, as I am knitting a lace pattern that this info would apply to.
You can use a circular needle if you like. Im mainly in to small projects because of my short attention span with projects. Everything else is the same though. Your knitting will overlap your thumb on your right hand.
I like how quick you knit you are like superman with knitting needles! I have been looking for almost two years for a video of a person who knits "pencil style". Your throw method with your fingers is super effecient. I just learned how to throw with my fingers just about last August. However I prefer to knit continental but the tension is not even. So I knit american for serious projects.
