don't worry. i'm from union mississippi and i think i know where tylertown is.. and katrina affected us bad too..and were like mid east mississippi and it was horrible..uprooted trees..power was out for almost 2 weeks..trees landed on houses..it was a disaster..but i know it was a billion times worse in new orleans..new orleans is a historic unique city.. i love it, and don't pay attention to what people say, 9 times out of 10 they're jealous.

It doesn't only apply those that flee from a foreign country, it can be those that flee from a region that isn't livable. Perhaps some people truly couldn't leave New Orleans but others surely could. Everyone loves to shit on FEMA and bush for not getting aid to New Orleans. For those that don’t know, FEMA activated thousands of emergency workers all across the US. I was one of the paramedics that went there. We were stopped at the Louisiana border by State troopers. The governor of Louisiana gave an order to stop all emergency workers and aid that was coming in because she didn’t feel she had enough control over the responders. We sat for 2 days waiting for the governor to let us in

I've been there to see the aftermath! I served in the Navy and went there for deployment. The water line in every home was almost to the ceiling! It was an honor to be a servant to the people of slydale. I felt the appreciation through the hugs and hand shakes! It was sad to see people trying to make money off people's sorrows! My crew was trying to clear as many trees from people's homes as possible before we had to return home!
While I serve in the Navy, I was sent there. I still think about the lost everyone took! The water line on just about every home I've been to was near the ceiling! I couldn't believe how people was trying to make money taking falling trees off homes! It's sad that your family would be like that! First off, I'm really sorry that people were mean to you when you relocated. That wasn't right. Your definition of "refugee" is completely off. It doesn't only apply those that flee from a foreign country, it can be those that flee from a region that isn't livable. Perhaps some people truly couldn't leave New Orleans but others surely could. Some even went on record saying they chose to stay. That means they took the risk, the gamble to stay. Add in looters and folks shooting and helicopters....

Everyone loves to shit on FEMA and bush for not getting aid to New Orleans. For those that don’t know, FEMA activated thousands of emergency workers all across the US. I was one of the paramedics that went there. We were stopped at the Louisiana border by State troopers. The governor of Louisiana gave an order to stop all emergency workers and aid that was coming in because she didn’t feel she had enough control over the responders. We sat for 2 days waiting for the governor to let us in

I've been there to see the aftermath! I served in the Navy and went there for deployment. The water line in every home was almost to the ceiling! It was an honor to be a servant to the people of slydale. I felt the appreciation through the hugs and hand shakes! It was sad to see people trying to make money off people's sorrows! My crew was trying to clear as many trees from people's homes as possible before we had to return home!

I couldn't believe how people was trying to make money taking falling trees off homes! It's sad that your family would be like that! skl and we left to texas for a few days and then to baton rouge
bc they wouldnt let us go back since the hurracane really struck bad i had to go to a skl in baton rouge and i hated it !! it was the worst i was so happy when
we came back to nola but just to find out alot of my friends werent coming back and well yeah i went trough i lot during that time but i refusee!!! to leave nola!

my family lived in new orleans and we invited our family we lived at the time which was up north trying to be nice and they destroyed our brand new house. and my mom was so upset she didnt even want to live in that house so we had to move. true story, and im so sorry what happened to you. my other house in mississippi got destoyed a bit too and i was sad so i cant even imagine how you feel :(

I find it hard to believe your family would just act like they are not related to you and toss you out, knowing you guys had nowhere else to go. At the same time it just shows us that some people might act nice but when a crisis happens they become ignorant to avoid responsibility of simply putting a roof over your head temporarily. I grew up in Houma but often visited family in New Orleans. The day the levees broke changed our lives as well. Thank you for clearing up the term "refugees". I didn't know that this was hurtful to the people. I love New Orleans more now than I did before Katrina. Thank you for telling your story.

I grew up in Houma Louisiana and often visited relatives and our beloved city. I spent my first wedding anniversary at City Park. I have lived in Tennessee for 15 years now. When the levees broke I knew it was going to be bad. It would be a year before I could go to visit. As my husband and I drove through New Orleans we cried. Thank you for clearing up this term "refugees". I didn't realize that this was hurting people. Thank you for telling your story.

@mrdmcday A refugee is defined as one who seeks refuge. It doesn't just apply to those who flee from their country. It mostly does, but in the instance where citizens of New Orleans were seeking refuge somewhere else, it doesn't. If you do not believe me, you can look it up in the dictionary.

@MrYungFatal While there are positive things that have happened since then, you have to look at it from her point of view. Yesterday was 9/11 and to list a bunch of random positive things would be kind of bittersweet.
Besides, they didn’t ask for positive things, they asked for stories and there were a lot of evils, beyond the hurricane itself, that transpired down there.
It’s sort of like trying to be festive during a Holocaust memorial service. It’s just doesn’t fit, you know?
