Look man im not gonna get into it with ya but I have to tell you they dont suck. I understand it but it took some studying. At first, yes, it sounded random but i knew they were cited as a challenging, 'open-pallet' approach band and respected by the most technical bands in the world (Meshuggah to name 1) Although sometimes without taste, thier patterns and syncopations keep me hooked. It grew on me like wildfire once i realized the randomness is actually controlled.

Took like 2 years of 'Math Metal' exposure for me to like DEP. Alot of thier music is incredibly hard to digest and sounds bad until you know it well. I just know that if i can find these patterns and changes perfectly, ill be better, especially as a drummer, for limb independance ;P The new(er) album had alot of more listener-friendly songs.

Chris was great, but I felt Gil matched his precision, and also brought a groove and feel to the music that wasn't there before.
However, I can't help but think Gil wouldn't have had anything to go off of if Chris wasn't there in the first place.

Seriously, anyone that thinks they suck obviously can't appreciate the fact that DEP can write better music than they can. If you're one of those people saying DEP sucks, you probably have never played anything out of 4/4 time, or maybe you don't even know what that is.

you really don't have a clue, and yes, i do listen to old jazz, but to be honest i'm more of a fan of the modern contemporary stuff (not to say old jazz is bad, its amazing) Let me give you a brief lesson in time signatures.
4/4 - 4 beats in a bar, of crotchets (4th note)
4/8 - 4 beats in a bar, of quavers (8th note)
7/8 - 7 beats in a bar, of quavers (8th note)
2/2 - 2 beats in a bar, of minims (2nd note)
3/5 - 3 beats in a bar, of..5th notes? - oh wait..they don't exist!

Like i told 1607, it may be sometimes without 'conventional taste', but 'poor' refers to talent. DEP takes REAL brains (and dedication) to digest. The 'randomness', DEPs orig. sound is patterns. Look man im not gonna get into it with ya but I have to tell you they dont suck. I understand it but it took some studying. At first, yes, it sounded random but i knew they were cited as a challenging, 'open-pallet' approach band and respected by the most technical bands in the world (Meshuggah to name 1) Although sometimes without taste, thier patterns and syncopations keep me hooked. It grew on me like wildfire once i realized the randomness is actually controlled.

Took like 2 years of 'Math Metal' exposure for me to like DEP. Alot of thier music is incredibly hard to digest and sounds bad until you know it well. I just know that if i can find these patterns and changes perfectly, ill be better, especially as a drummer, for limb independance ;P The new(er) album had alot of more listener-friendly songs.

Yea man i totally understand where your coming from. And it took me a little bit to really understand Math Metal..if you want to bring up bands like Mudvayne for instance..i duno if they go under that category, but they have some very intricate time changes, and off time signature, and so on....i think teh thing that strikes me about DEP is the chords they use..i can admit their great musicans, but its just the chords they use are just so...weird lol
