Bill always introduced Kenny Baker as "The finest fiddler in bluegrass music." Aside from Kenny's superlative fiddling on this tune, Bill demonstrated how he was a master of playing the mandolin. Even though he was mostly strumming, he was a master of right hand technique, varying the rhythm subtly. Most mandolin pickers are stuck in a straight up down motion.
I first met Kenny at the KFC bluegrass fest. down in Louisville Ky cerca 1978 or about, the show was over and my Dad, a fiddler whom Kenny knew, we went over to the hotel with Byron Berline and knocked on Kenny's hotel room door. Kenny opened open the door and said "Hey boys, come on in" Kenny wasn't in very good shape, he had a bad tooth ache at the time. We had a jam session til the weee hours of the morn. Damn, what a time we had...I really miss those times. Heaven is full of music.
This tune shows Monroe's individual combination of blues and country. Others have followed Monroe by playing bluegrass very well, but this version (with Baker on fiddle) of this song is unmatched.
I like the way he changes the order in which he sings the lyrics. The very last line is now "Hey lettle water boy, bring that water round/ If you don't like your job, set your water bucket down." It changes the meaning of the entire song. A bow to the present by an old school legend. He did invent the entire genre of bluegrass, you know. I actually respect this.
The musical pairing of the genuis of Monroe and Baker...It will always remain the standard of excellence for those of us who truly love the genre created by William Smith Monroe. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video with all who remember these two wonderful men and their talents!

This is the tune that Bill played at the Grand Ole Opry in 1939 that earned a standing ovation and a place on the show "until he fired himself."
