@JBisaQueer In order to become a pilot in the military you have to graduate college with a Bachelor's degree in any major doesn't matter, get commissioned into an officer (obviously) from either The Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, AFROTC or NROTC, Officer Training School (Air Force) or Officer Candidate School (Marines). Reading from your post of what branches you like to join these are your options. As a former cadet I know the procedures but whatever path you choose GOOD LUCK.
Ok, I have a question, I'm a freshman in high school and I plan on either joining the Air Force or the Marines right after high school. I plan on pursuing a career in piloting while serving and in order to do so i have to become an officer and in order to become on officer i need a bachelor's degree. Is it a good idea to go to the academy and get a bachelor in science or should i go to a college and get a degree in what i want.
@JBisaQueer It all depends man. USAFA is a place for a different breed. Its very tough to get into. Everything about you has to be perfect. Otherwise, if you want to be a pilot going through ROTC is not a bad idea, but getting that pilot SLOT and field training slot is difficult as well. The air force is looking for engineers, and in order to be a pilot in the air force, it is recommended to be an engineering major as well. art majors are not as apt to receive a pilot slot as engineering majors.
@JBisaQueer Your chances are dramatically greater if you go to the academy and excel. People with science or mathematics degrees (particularly in physics, engineering, etc.) also tend to be better off than someone with a non-science or math related degree. If you want to be a pilot, than go to the Air Force or the Navy. Getting a pilot slot is hard enough, but its nearly impossible through the army or marines. The way to improve you chances now, is to maintain a high GPA. Good luck!
Awesome job! I'm hoping to take that oath myself in a few years after college, and I hope the path to commissioning isn't filled with butterflies and pretty flowers, but the same blood, sweat, and tears I've felt out of my years in ROTC. Congratulations!
Thank you. He has now completed Navigator / CSO (Combat Systems Officer) training. He gets his wings June 24, 2011. I wish you the very best when you begin your career with the United States Air Force.
LOUIS!!!!! What a surprise to see you on here! buddy, i was looking at CSO videos and found this air force commissioning video and wanted to see what it was like and i see your goofy face on here! hahaha. congrats my friend!
@Sloththebarbarian maybe that's a guy thing to hate sitting at a desk. I am a jet engine mechanic on the flight line and i'll take a desk job (making twice as much money and working three times less hard) over my badass GI Jane job ANY day of the week.

omigosh this will be the happiest moment of my life, next to my upcoming wedding day. I'm a Senior Airman, but becoming an officer is my current short term goal (two years). CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations, Lt. I took that oath 38 years ago and remember that day very well. I've done nothing in my life for which I have more great feelings and memories that serving with honorable men and women in the uniform of my country.

@VforVendetta07 I don't know about disrespectful, but he seemed nervous. HOWEVER...you do NOT have your arms folded when a superior officer is speaking to you and certainly not during a ceremony in your blues uniform.
Bear in mind that he didn't commission with the rest of his class because of an assignment change. With him being the only one it was quite casual. He knew and greatly respected his lady Colonel. We were present when the rest of his class commissioned. It was much more solemn and formal.
@VforVendetta07 His respect for this Colonel is much greater than you can imagine. He understudied her for 3 years. Since he didn't commission with the rest of his class (see other comments), he requested that she commission him, even though she had recently left her position with this AFROTC Detachment.
@VforVendetta07 As an enlisted troop, there were times when I had to report to officers directly(it's not what you think) and it's certainly a dead serious affair. I'd be more lax reporting to the top sergeant than that. Officers, to say the least, expect more military bearing than usual.
@MarcusKiner Well, certain career fields and billets have a closer, more familiar officer-enlisted relationship. That is definitely true for aircrew. Maintainers? Meh, not so much.
@enkansah Don't base the Air Force off of a youtube video of someone becoming a 2ndLt. Also remember, that's officer to officer interaction, not enlisted to officer. It's a more relaxed environment.
@enkansah and in addition to jkcampbell730's comment: they don't mind us crossing our arms. we don't have to be at attention and parade rest ALL the time. But when the ceremony starts and it is time to get down to business, THEN it's parade rest/attention. do your research before commenting

I am an airman in the NJANG thinking about comissioning. I have a 3.75, majored in poli. sci., and graduated from Temple Uni... wonder what my chances are...
@thebloody1 I'm gunna guess that since I am going to Rutgers for a Masters (got my acceptance letter this past week!) in a top 20 program that I could get into OTS... The problem is scheduling and deploying... Air Guard officers seem to deploy much more than the enlisted and I'd rather finish my degree with limited disruptions and responsibility.
@jackooboy1 yeah. OTS is EXTREMELY competitive. But think about this. In the enlisted field, if you make it to MSgt and you get your degree, you can then go even higher to Senior Master Sergeant and Chief Master Sergeant. cause if you DONT have a degree, MSgt is as high as you go (E-7) but with a degree, you can go to E-8 and E-9. It's worth it. Just get that degree bud.
@Millerboy23 I actually already have a degree and am getting a Master's degree currently. I'm also in the NJ ANG and am an A1C. I'm eligible to apply to OTS this September without penalty moving into the officer ranks, but am not into getting deployed, so I might stay where I'm at. My current boss doesn't have a degree and he's an E-8. My aunt was regular AF and retired 2007 as an E-9, again no degree. A degree helps with promotions, but isn't necessary in the enlisted ranks to make E-8/E-9.
idk i want to do field work but im trying to find a sf officer to talk to to see if they do field work or sit at a desk but i have heard from some people you sit at a desk till you get the rank of captain then you start to do field work but everyone has told me something diffrent so im hopeing to find a actual sf officer to tell me
Hey I go to ISU and am in the afrotc as well this is pretty sweet

As of this year to be selected to be E-8 and above for the USAF you need minimum a CCAF associates degree or you will not be promoted.
