"Being a simple player ... is a lot harder than being flashy and technical."
That is shit, I don't agree at all. That bashing around 1:00? That is the "feel"? Monkey could do that. Please, I can agree that Carl Palmer wouldn't be the right man for Free but let's not praise simplicity more than it deserves.
simon kirke, phil rudd, don hensley. all three were "less is more" type drummers, who had feel and timing far superior to many, many, more technical or flashy drummers
How many ways is a maj 7th chord notated in song charts? I know of three. Is any one the right one? Music is not nuclear physics and there are sometimes several ways to say the same thing. The first riff has no 3rd (root,4 to 5th hammer on, b7) but implies a minor 7th chord. Next he hits the b3 and hammers on the maj3 thus finally making it a B7 chord. It's all good!
Mike - why are we arguing about this - you implied that I should have listened to what Geoff said before I made a comment - which was a bit much but - hey, I'm a musician - it's OK.
All I'm saying is that - when talking about about this song (or most Free songs) - surely the most obvious word to mention is 'Blues'.
Kossoff played the blues - sometimes he played solos in a major scale - sometimes Free played in a minor key (Be my friend) - but I'll be creepin' has a definite Blues feel.
No need to argue here. Like I said "It's all good". Music is meant to be enjoyed so let's all just enjoy the great music Paul and the guys made before he left this world way too young.
Geoff clearly states this song is based on a B7th riff and the B minor 3rd resolving to a major 3rd is happening. This is a fairly common riff that is used by so many artists but NEVER did he say this song is in B minor. You guys hear what you want to hear but he clearly says "The minor is never really stated in the first place. So you've got just a little B7th riff really. That's the minor, there's the major, and you end up with a perfect B chord.
I still say he's wrong - he says it's a B minor chord at 6.00. I've read your points and they are fair enough but can someone answer this-
Why mention B minor when the song is in a major key - when he mentions it goes to the minor - he's wrong because it's not in a minor key. What he should have said is this -
He plays the blues in B and when he goes to the 3rd he starts with the blues scale 3rd then goes to the major 3rd.
Yeh I agree - Geoff's seems like a nice guy and is for sure a cracking guitar player but Koss played straight from the heart and came from classic but just loved to play blues - It always fascinates me how so much talent comes from such a damp wind swept climate -
I think it's great to examine songs and I think there should be more of it. There's just one thing nagging me though - sorry to be pedantic. Geoff Whitehorn says about I'll be creepin being based on B minor. There's nothing B minor about it at all. It's a blues song in B. The minor third is part of the blues and the fact that Kossoff hammers onto the major third proves my point. OK - it's strange that he does this in a blues vein but that's Koss for you. It's nothing to do with a minor scale.
Nice to see a documentary made for musicians, not that bunch of foolish yhings you see about personal lifes and no music at all. Here, there are musicians talking about the songs strucutures and how the band played them.
Fascinating stuff. No-one has said how slowly they played. Listen to or watch 'Mr Big', it's painfully slow but it still swings like few can achieve.
