Always remember, white people have more in common with black people than with rich people. That's how rich people have always stayed on top. By dividing. @Mischtchratzer I was weaned on Mahalia, born in 1956 my mother played Mahalia records all the time and this in the south. My mother often told me Mahalia was the greatest gospel singer that would ever live and she knew what she was talking about. I myself love black people, desiring fellowship and I'm white. I'm am aware however of the shameful history of slavery & pray the Lord heals ALL of our hearts so we can be joined together in the fellowship of the Lord. God Bless.

I played this video for my mother earlier, and she is of that generation that remembers when Mahalia was contemporary. And she teared up and said, "This is when people could and would JUST SING!" I also like how she starts of kinda subdued, and then skyrockets. I'm sure somebody at that Jazz Festival got saved that day.

Just wonderful. As a child, I grew up listening to Mahalia Jackson, but didn't learn to appreciate the rich sound of her voice until my teen years. Now I'm in my mid fifthies and still loving this great gospel singer. There will never be another like her.

I have no religiosity but when I hear her do this (and the knockout to see her in what must be one of the great bravura performances by a vocalist ever recorded) I am awed. I was a child when this was televised in Australia about 1972. I saw this performance ONCE. I have remembered it always. The next part of the performance had Louis Armstrong (also sick at this time) reprising the chorus with Mahalia after the audience demanded she return to the stage for more. And the crowd danced with joy.

I can't count how many times I've seen this performance on here and on the PBS special. But everytime I'm moved to tears. There will never be another singer who can evoke so much emotion with her voice. Never!! Miss Jackson was quite ill when she did this concert. And I think died a year or two later.
