Did someone say Bach stands between Beethoven and Mozart, chronologically or musically? And did this person get 32 thumbs up? The other two are after him, and an afterthought.
@zosobeatles They could not make a go out of music and were pushed away by the cheesy pop crap culture of today. That is my story and I am sticking to it.
@zosobeatles Bach's kin were forcibly kidnapped long ago by the CIA. They have forever since been forced to write cheesy pop music impregnated with a sticky brainwash of society degrading messages. The secret political machine that warranted their apprehension has also hired brainless puppets such as Britney Spears and Justin Bieber to perform these works. Whenever one of these pawns threatens to leak he gets nabbed MJ is an example of this. Now you know! God save me!
Cette cantate a été composée non pour l"annonciation, mais pour le 1er dimanche de l'Avent. Morgenstern, l'étoile du matin, est une métaphore qui désigne le Christ.
The Bach-Werke-Vereichnis isn't chronological, it's thematic, so cantatas come first, then other sacred works, etc. Bach's first compositions were organ works composed around 1703.
That was really a good thought, to show us the text and notes along with the sound! to sing along listening listening, singing loudly or inside the heart
... " Du bist die große Macht, vollkommen an Geburt, der Gnädige, reich an Wunderzeichen, stark an Taten." ...
I think not knowing the language lets you concentrate more on the beauty of the music itself, rather than the words, which also have their own beauty, but can make you think about what they are saying rather than listening to the message within.
It belongs together - music and words. Especially in Bach´s chorale cantatas. In this case the music itself is impressively beautiful but knowing the lyrics and knowing how Bach describes them in his music makes it breathtaking.
Maybe if I spoke German I would know hat you mean lol... BUt is this like a different, older variation on the German language? Kinda how the catholics took Latin and messed around with it?
The choral is still sung and well understood in the Lutheran Church. - If we look at the first line:
Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern - directly translated (without English grammar):
How beautiful shines the morning star. The climax is "Morgenstern = morning star", but "schön = beautiful" is the preparing step for the climax and between both is a connecting tensioon bridge. Beautifully in "leuchtet = shines" the melody makes a step down as the star shines down to earth ..... and so on.
So in the interpretation you have to take care for that bridge between "schön" and "Morgenstern", what is not difficult in German as you just have to think that the morning star is beautiful (if you´re not drunk.....)
That´s the singer´s/conductor´s view. So this would be very important for the listeners to know.
agreed! This sounds MUCH better in the original German version. Translating Bach's choral works into English, or any other language for that matter, just doesn't do them proper justice!
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (September 6), I played a hymn set to this tune, composed by Philipp Nicolai and adapted and harmonized by J.S. Bach. It is O Holy Spirit, Enter In written by Michael Schirmer and translated by Catherine Winkworth. Just thought I'd share. This is good hymn for The Day of Pentecost.
The orchestra is composed of continuo: viollincello, organ, 2 cornets (french horn in f) 2 Oboe di caccia ( or modern equivalent cor anglais) 2 violin concertante or 2 solo violin, Ensemble Violin I and II, and viola.
a canon in vocal....impressive...o.O

I can tell why this is BWV #1. An extremely amazing show of Bach's prowess as a musician
antione101 4 months ago
@antione101, musicologists numbered his Cantatas starting from 1 to 200 something. Bach didn't number his cantatas. See BWV on wikipedia.

Yep, if you put it thusly. But unofficial, most probably 'Aus der Tiefe' is older than this BWV1. It got the BWV131 numbering, and is from 1707.
