There are very few actually. But getting your personal environment setup in Linux can be time consuming, just as it is in Windows. TBH, it's all a chicken and egg/catch 22 problem. The only reason some software and hardware don't work under a *nix environment are because fewer people use it. If Linux even had a 10% desktop market share, almost 100% of hardware mfgs would write drivers for it. Same goes for software designers. A lot more would port their apps.

when you plugged in any driver from just about anywhere, it worked

with linux, thats the kind of goal you want... the interface needs to be de-nerdifed, yes that MS-DOS terminal might be cool for you, but for 99% of the population its pointless

compiz fusion does indeed rock, but gimmicks for the sake of gimmicks should be left to the macs, linux should be about doing things right

See the problem is, is nobody really knows about Linux. So they don't use linux. So seeing as nobody really uses linux theres no point to waste money making programs like MSN and AIM for it. Or making games for it. Or making drivers and printers compatible with it. If only more people knew about it (because it is the best OS out there in my opinion) it would be even better.

Pidgin is a meta replacement for MSN and AIM, and in fact it's so good I use it on Windows too. ( Pidgin is primarily a Linux development. )

Most drivers are compatible with recent distro's for linux, such as ubuntu, but VERY recent hardware and the odd printer may have it's drivers missing from the face of the earth, sad.

It certainly has POTENTIAL, which is all that you need to make something great, Linux will grow.

yea if it were more mainstream, it would be alot better. one day it might happen.but for now the average computer user will find it confusing to use, thus making windows the choice for users. if linux had a better support group, average users might be able to set it up. who knows how hard microsoft is trying to crush the resistance. la viva linux!

we just dont like microsoft. personally ive never used vista, but i heard bad complaints about it , from people who only use microsoft. i like window xp, but i will not try vista because of the anti piracy features. plus it hogs all of your systems resources. ubuntu gusty on the otherhand is better then xp. easy to install, easy to set up. plus its free. i can gurantee it will boot faster then xp anyday. but microsoft on the other hand is well known for there ease of use. so i guess its up to u

linux is still infinitely more productive than windows if thats what youre concerned about. it can run forever without a reboot. and its far more stable and you will not spend as much time trouble shooting problems like with windows and finally get to use your computer. not to mention there are about 350,000 virus threats for windows which will steal your valuable data. compared to about 100 for linux.

actually there are some ssh tools for windows but they dont work nearly as well as with linux..nor are they as powerful.

That's a myth. You can breach into other systems with windows just as you can write scripts designed to scan ports and then connect to the server through those ports with windows. And it's not*THAT*harder with windows.
