idgaf!! its proven the Soviet were dopping its proven they the comity were not aware of the drugs at that time tho.. and was not on the list so you can't take the record away
idgaf!! its proven the URS were dopping its proven they the comity were not aware of the drugs at that time tho.. and was not on the list so you can't take the record away
It just proves what an amazing athlete Evelyn Ashford was, to take the baton either two or three meters behind Gohr, run her down, and finish a meter ahead. Whereas Gohr was at the end of her career, Ashford was putting up still very fast times in 1988, and I think that's what made part of the difference. I think it's kind of fitting that the video for the 4X100 segment fades out on the closeup of Ashford crossing the line ahead of Gohr, symbolizing her getting the last laugh in their rivalry.
@MrFlexybee But from how I understand it to be, of the women qualified to run in that relay, she was the fastest on the curves. Hence her running position.
@Parker528 Even though she was fast on the curve, her ridiculous speed would have killed the back stretch i mean the 2nd leg.if Flo Jo has run the 2nd leg Ashford would have had a comfortable lead by the time she gets the baton, hence breaking the record.
@MrFlexybee now I understand, I have the relay taped, & ove it. Am I correct then that the "back stretch: is what Sheila Echols ran? The sportscaster, (Jenkins?) talking about that stadium having a long back stretch. Dwight Jones was very critical of the flo jo to Evelyn being a bad pass; but Frank shorter spoke right up how Evelin is such a good relay runner b/c she out her hand back, never turned back to peek, and once stick is in hand she grabbed and held on for dear life.
Respond to this video... And the video shows the anchor leg again before the commercial, and just exactly where Evelyn had the baton, appearing to just be in her pinky or in two fingers, like maybe the pinky and the next one. In that straight away, she tore up that track; I have never seen Bob Hayes anchor in, what was in Tokyo, but maybe it was the angle of the camera and showing effectively just how much she made up,,,an awesome site!
I couldn't agree more with your comment. I remember watching this race thinking they have too much of a lead on her Evelyn. Then low and behold Evelyn just let's her natural speed take over and win. I have never felt so proud of this lady. What a race.
I remember this '88 Olympics like yesterday. The only thing I didn't like - the events were all over the place. I happened to come home early from school and caught the relays. Do you have the 1996 relays?
Notably absent is Gwen Torrence from the USA team. She had an argument with the USA coach and supposedly kept messing up the baton passes, and was replaced by Alice Brown. Alice Brown has one of the best starts in the sport and was given the nod to do it, but I wonder if Torrence ran in the prelim rounds at all, she should have had that chance and been given a medal
As matter of fact there have been faster times- Marita Koch still holds the WR in 400m at 47.6 (in an actual 400m race) and Jarmila Kratochvilova has a 47.99s'.
Should have put florence on the second leg. I know she's the 200 wr holder and she was on the wc winning team, but her ridiculous speed would have destroyed that backstretch and had the U.S. in at around 41.2 or 41.1.
@CHEETAH69 - WOW!!!!!!!! I was thinking the same thoughts as to having her be put on the second leg and then Ashford would have ran an even faster anchor leg!
Many thanks for posting this. I would be interested if anyone has the splits for Behrendt and Auerswald-Lange on legs two and three for the GDR. Marlies seemed in better form for this race than she had been in the 100m semis -- her leg speed seemed there, as did some of the aggression. But she looked nowhere near as driven as she did running the same leg in Moscow in 1980.
@starcraftiskool Nope Evelyn is the BIG BITCH USA is better than Soviet Union and Florence was a more faster and better sprinter no one has beat HER RECORDS IN THE 100M AND THE 200M. HAHA
I can't believe it finally a clear version. Evelyn ran the race of her life. She simply was the best. I will never forget this race. Thanks so much for posting this one.
What is also notable about the 4X400 is that the GDR was not a factor at all in this race, and that the team of Dagmar Neubauer, Kirsten Emmellman, Sabine Busch, and Petra Muller is the exact same team that won the world championship the year earlier.
Regarding the 4X400, I'm really not surprised that the USSR set the world record, when you look who they had running: Tatyana Ledovskaya the silver medalist in the 400m hurdles, Olga Nazarova the bronze medalist in the 400m, Maria Pinigina the veteran who had been on the Soviet team since at least the 1983 world championships, and of course Olga Bryzgina the 400m gold medalist.
Still, a gallant effort by the USA by running under world record time as well.
I would wager that most sprinters would have pannicked if they found themselves in a similar situation to Ashford's, but she clearly demonstrated why she is one of the greatest of all time. Simply beautiful the way she ran Gohr down.
Thanks for posting!
