So now I "composed" my very first song and it makes so much fun and I just want to share and say "thank you" for your great video. So influenced by your work, you can see my "Waterfall Dreams" in my videolist. I'll appreciate to watch further videos of you. Greetings from an asian guy living in germany. :-)

  • @IamTheSupremacy, you can also use the chord progression to compose sad music. Only that the rhythm is slow and has to sound sad.

    -Amy of PianoMother

  • Thank you for such a straight forward and excellent lesson!

  • @foggymedia, you are welcome

  • I always have a hard time writing my own songs on my piano without making the music sound familiar to the people. My only tip is to be creative and play around. I also have a hard time memorizing the notes of the song, or I keeping thinking that I'm incapable of writing a simple song, but I don't give up. I want to thank you for showing these videos because they are very helpful!

  • I love how she goes HI

  • @NizziRandomz whats so great about it lol

  • Been playing piano for 3 1/2 years now, Im a rather good pianist not to brag or anything.. I learn things rather fast.. my issue is I only know how to play by sheet music and would love to learn how to play by ear and also I have friends that sing and would love to follow a long when they sing but I just do not know how... so Im planning on purchasing Your Definitive Improvisation Dvd and Mastering piano accompaniment and was wondering which one should I start of with first.. Thx

  • @steven144 Hi Steve, the Definitive Improvisation course could be a good start. Here's the link: playpianotips . com.

  • @steven144 OMG i have the same problem with sheet music :(

  • thx alot, please check out the song i wrote on my channel and tell me what u think (:

  • really really good..i been watching people but now i got it through this video...thank you

  • Good info

  • Piano Mother, thank you for this video. I 've been writing song lyrics and want to also write the music for my songs. This video is helping me reach my goal. Bless you.

  • nice...

  • Thanks.

  • I love playing the piano as i find other things difficult so i play the piano by myself as i am the only one in the house who is musical and i am the only child so music has become a friend to me. it can be difficult with so many distractions but i am self taught so im a lot slower at playing than other people

  • She scared me with the intro, Other then that, a very good video.

  • I saw many videos on composing of music, but out of all videos I liked your video. Because I found that you are gave clear explanations on how to compose music which encourage the beginners.

  • Thank you so much! I am hoping to become a famous piano player when I grow up. I am currently 11 years old but I started piano at the age of 2 and have progressed through out the years. You helped my skills improve a whole lot. Thank you pianomother. You rock!

  • ur are so amazing thx u helped so much

  • your courses are awesome!!!

  • helped a lot, thx!

  • The thing that kills me about all these teachers on Youtube is that I learned over 40 chords but the teachers keep inverting them. If your not use to inverting chords your done, it's like I know nothing. One chord can be inverted so many ways and Now I have to learn how to invert all of those chords. This just drives me nuts and then they say it's easy lol. It will take me 8 months to learn how to invert all those chords 3 different ways.

  • i love you so much. :D I watched this before a few months ago and I really didn't like it, but now i'm starting to compose a lot more and you've helped me a lot. thx!

  • @asynonym85 Great! Keep up the good work.

  • Very helpful, thanks for making this. :)

  • hi, I have this problem. I compose music in my head but I cannot play the piano and I cannot read notes or write down what I have in my head. is there any computer program that would write the notes of what I sing? something that would show me when I sing into a microphone what note that was. sorry if it is a stupid question.. thanks

  • I play guitar but your videos are helpful for any instrument

  • Very well done! You make music composition accessible even to a novice composer. Thanks!

  • Thnku PMOM!

  • Oh my! thank you! you helped a lot! (:

  • Your job is interesting but I think composing isn't science. If someone have no music talent he just CAN'T compose a good song. Music is about feelings and stories... it's not only notes. And when someone want to compose he must listen to his heart. Because it doesn't work if you only use notes.

  • Thanks Piano MUMY! God bless YOU!

  • go to MY CAT SONG "TOMBOY" or to hear my bluesy stuff go to MICHAEL MOSLEY'S BLUES PICKING

  • thank you

  • Wow, thank you! God bless!

  • Its really reassuring to find a lesson that is so easy and reassuring. THANKS!

  • I don't know how to get inspiration when composing. Is there any way to get ideas? Before it was quite easy to compose but now, I don't know, it seems like I don't even know how to write ongs anymore :(

  • @EdwinNg1994 I am having the same problem. But basically what I have been told is to just play from the heart and the soul. Just write and improvise and before you know it, BAM you have a song :)

  • 5:28. Is there any other variations? I would really like to know them. I already know like 3 variations, but more would be great.

  • haha pianomother xdd yea u like ma mother teachin me haha

    nice viidd xd

  • Lovely tutorial

  • this song is too simple. I like complex pieces.

  • Hey, ive got a question kind of similar to Wrathorn's. Im also a music producer or to be music producer, wouldnt say im there yet. Anyways, i want to focus composing, scales, and how to play different emotions, and hand coordination. By the way, i love this tutorial, you made it simple, and you made it good(;

  • Hi

The way you explain your music techniques & principles especially for beginner , is simply amazing .

    best of luck

  • its good :P

  • just........................OMG!

  • HI.

  • Its the voice again!!!!!!! Ahhhhhh

  • I like your videos but your voice makes my head hurt :(

  • im still a learner....i find it very hard to play with my left hand while my right hand is at it.....what do i do?????

  • Hi!

I've been watching several of your video tutorials now. I noticed you have so many courses to choose from, but for now I can only so much at a time. I'm studying to be a music producer and I my needs are in priority

    A. Rhythm and timing: I have trouble counting in my head or with a metronome (more distracting).

    B. I lack 2 hand coordination, and A exaggerates it more.

    C. Song composing like this one

I guess I'm a bit mono-minded and need help to be multi tasking.

    Thanks :)

  • @Wrathorn Thanks for your comments. I think you will benefit the most from our online piano rhythm course and hand coordination course. You can find these two courses at our home page yoke wong dot net

  • @pianomother Thanks for the reply, I'll look into those programs! And which program of yours is good for helping to compose music just like this one video? The Improv one?

  • @Wrathorn

If you are not born with a good ability to feel rhythm automatically without thinking about it, you will probably never be able to learn it. Hand coordination is learned, though. You get better at composing music, too, but if you are not born with a musical sense, you're not meant to be a composer. A "producer" can be something different and does not always have to know squat.

  • haha.i love her..she sounds like peter chao.....lol...

    so awesome

  • Thank you for this lesson, it has proved useful, though I have a small question. I recently uploaded my first original composition (VGM orientated) that goes into detail of how I got the medley, though I've now reached the point I don't know what to do next.

I created 2 sections. Each with their own chords, but when I revisit Section A, I feel that the composition quickly gets repetitive, I try to switch it around a little, but it still sounds off, what would you request is a good approach?

  • @findlay27 Have you considered replacing the chords with their relative minor chords or using chord substitution? It may sound completely different yet interesting. For example you may use A minor chord instead of C maj chord etc.

Sometimes you may have to cool off a few days before revisiting the piece. The next time when you revisit the composition, it will give you slightly different perspective.

  • @pianomother Yeah, I understand that perfectly, it's more the right hand than the left hand I'm having a problem on. I've had my fair share of mixing around chords. I just seem to struggle at producing a main medley that I'm happy with.

Anyway I totally agree, infact that is probably one of the best bits of advice you can offer a pianist, not to cram hour and hour, day after day when trying to learn a particular excerpt or technique, not sure if it's a subconscious thing, but it actually works.

  • i wish i could subscribe to you again but i cant!!!! darn ... so im just going to call you mom from now on ... ok mom? kk thanks for the tut anyways mom!!!! :)))))

  • What's lower than a beginner? Because that's what I am, but this does seem basic

  • for composing a music, whether I should start by making a chord, or I have to compose the melody first?

    please answer thx....

  • @aghaanantyab I suggest you to start with you melody.

That's what I do. Play random notes slap your piano. You will hear something that will please you and then, modify, create out of what you have. Start with random melody

  • Awesome teaching....

  • Great lesson!

  • Thanks for the lesson, you are a beautiful lady!

  • @luchu18 Thank you!

  • Thank you for this lesson. I like seeing the written notes coming up on screen.

  • @stevalianarbone Please see your message box, I had sent you the sheet music for the lesson. Thanks!

  • Thank you :) The link you added below your video has a " , " too much, so that the link doesnt work... Remove that :)

  • thank you! I will try something like this!

  • Thank you for this video! :D Can you talk about how to use accidentals while improvising/composing in one of your next videos? Because I'm always sticking with just the notes that are in the key I'm playing in...~

  • @therunningpianist42 The accidentals are commonly used to serve as grace notes - sometimes give more "spices" and "flavor".

  • @pianomother : But how do we know when/where to add them? Because sometimes I try and it sounds nice and other times it sounds awful. XD

  • @therunningpianist42 There are lots of experiments and testing. Usually it is based on scale notes of the key. You can add a series of grace notes. I talked about about this in details in our definitive piano improv course. You can find it on our website yokewong dot net
