I hear you man. I have a slim 120 gb PS3 without BC and I still have a nice PS2 collection. NOw my old ps2 system is acting up so I now have to consider purchasing a slim ps2 for $99.99. I would purchase a download BC program for like $50 for the PS3 but I think that is one of main reason for the YLOD. Something to think about. And some people need to stop saying that the PS2 is the past and not as good as PS3. The PS2 may not have better graphics but the PS2 has the best collection of games.

I'm tired of all you guys crying, I work at sony in san fransco. the reason we don't have backwards compatable is because it destroys your laser, and your out of line were number one currently your stats are out of date, in our opening year in 2006 we out sold xbox 360 within a couple months, were saving your system, so stop crying. this is what that laser has to do compact disc, dvd rawr, dvd rewritable, dvd light layer, dvd double layered, blue ray movie, blue ray game, blue ray writable.
Oh and the YLOD error is caused by lack of heat sink compound on the heat sinks which is caused by rapid heating and cooling. With the older ps3 systems if you played the ps2 games it would give your system extreme amounts of wear and heat. Which is another reason why they stopped the backwards compatibility.
Wel the reason they took that add on out and remade the sony ps3 practically was because the data usage and add on caused the ps3 to freeze up and get software errors and it would fail to go into safe mode and fry the whole things. Its happened to me twice already. By the way the ps3 supports 3d, hd, and bluray along with stunning games and online play thats why people buy the ps3 its not a ps2. But i do agree this situation stinks.

However, what Sony is doing (they are re-releasing PS2 classics collection for the PS3, while at the same time, keeping the backwards compatibility off), I'd RATHER buy a used PS2 system then to buy the PS2 games all over again. But what I'd say, get a 60-gigabyte system. I don't want to have to put up with these memory cards and wired controllers and switch boxes.

@TheCheatmaster45 Well, unfortunately, the PS2 add on is not an emulator, but actually is a system (they should have had it built in to the system right out of the box), that enables online gameplay, or PS2 games that uses a hard drive, to utalise the feature as a hard drive image.
In other words, it's simply a PS2 hard drive emulator, not a system emulator.

Well said. Sony has either lied or went back on their word mostly this gen. Examples, at the start of PS3, they said rumble/dualshock will never return. Look what happened, it came back. They denied PSP GO/PS3 Slim, that was released. Said PS2 B/C was a core value and believe it should be offered, went back on their word just because the stupid PS2 is still selling. Hell, PS1 and PS2 sold together before they stopped making PS1 hardware. Said Linux would always be supported on "fat" PS3s.
And guess what, they take it away. And yeah, everyone is saying "ps2 is still selling/only 100 dollars." Well guess what? That's a $100 plus extra controllers, memory cards, network adapter (if you still use a fat ps2), multi-tap, hard drive (for FF11, Socom, etc), ethernet cable (yeah some ps2 games still have online). @Amaterasu234 I think you are talking about the "PS2 Systems Data" icon. Apperently, it doesn't work, as it only worked with the already BC system, used to play online PS2 games.
i bought my PS3 40GB brand new in summer 2008. At first I was a little skeptical because it doesn't play PS2 games. After my first taste of high def gaming, I had to ask myself " What PS2 games?". They are a thing of the past, and I never had a problem :D

the PS2 is at a point in it's life where it is selling nearly as much as it;s next generation counterpart, and this is the main reason why Sony is holding out on the backwards compatibility. Sony wants the life cycle for their consoles to be around 10 years, this statements proves most true with the PS2 considering the moderately high sales it still has. the PS2's life cycle is coming to a close as next October will mark the 10 year anniversary of the system

This is an outrage! Im gettin a ps3 slim 250gb for x-mas(Christmas). And no bc! I have a ps2 fat, but I would perfer to play them on a next gen console, and play the next gen consoles games! Being a Huge Metal Gear fan, MGS4 is the one regret in not having a PS3. I think no big corporation makes these type of decisions without a good thought-out reason. When your games fade away, with each new generation system. They can repackage them & sell you the same shit via download content!

I have a regular PS3 console, but not the PS3 Slim which I'm not be getting it. Same problem as my 80GB PS3 playing PS2 games. My brother has a a 20GB PS3 that allows to play PS2 games, but the 80GB PS3 doesn't. I have a PS2 slim and it still works good, but it plays PS2 games as well. Now I have the PS2 Slim and a regular 80GB PS3.

I'm not getting one obviously, I'm just saying If the Slim does eventually get 100% BC then it will piss on the fire of everyone with a 20GB/60GB model. Including myself to be honest. Besides, here in Europe Sony screwed us, they gave us a emulator in the Euro 60GB's just like the USA 80GB's and hoped we wouldnt notice. I wouldnt care about that slyness but it fucked with 2 of my favourite PS2 games of all time: Tekken Tag Tournament and MGS3.

The PS2 system is dead and clunky to me. Believe me, there are people out there that hate the idea of having a shelf full of clunky machines to play their backlog library of games.
When I got the PS2, I put the PS1 aside, due to the backwards compatibility. Earlier in the life, I played Final Fantasy 9 on the PS2, which was a PS1 game.
People want to keep the library of their old favorites, yet keep their setup simple with one or two pieces of electronics. That's my view.

I don't think so. The PS2 is still popular despite it's age, so Sony probably removed BC for the sake of increasing PS2 sales (if the PS3 supports PS2 games then there is little to no reason to buy a PS2). BC is not coming back, live with it.
And on top of that, I'd definitely go the extra buck for B/C and 4 usb ports. They cant just keep giving future PS3's nothing but bigger hard drives, theyll end up milking the Slim series and confusing the consumers all over again!

I was so happy as i got a PS3 250 GB slim for christmas, but now i´m planing on returning it and sticking with by PS2, cause other than not being BWC, it dosint wanna connect wireless to PC, if it has Windows VISTA that sucks.....Sony you´re loosing a long time supporter of sony!

i just got a 250 GB ps3 slim two days ago and i put in a ps2 game and it says "unsupported data" :( fortunately ps1 games still work cuz i put in crash bandicoot warped and it worked

This is an outrage! Im gettin a ps3 slim 250gb for x-mas(Christmas). And no bc! I have a ps2 fat, but I would perfer to play them on a next gen console, and play the next gen consoles games! Why cant all ps3s be backwards compatible right out of the box like the Wii! All sony cares about is money. They only did no bc so they could make more money off ps2! Sure the slim is backwards compatible with ps1, but I only have like 5 ps1 games, and I dont even play them! Sony just doesnt care about us!

Being a Huge Metal Gear fan, MGS4 is the one regret in not having a PS3. I think no big corporation makes these type of decisions without a good thought-out reason. When your games fade away, with each new generation system. They can repackage them & sell you the same shit via download content!

I have a regular PS3 console, but not the PS3 Slim which I'm not be getting it. Same problem as my 80GB PS3 playing PS2 games. My brother has a a 20GB PS3 that allows to play PS2 games, but the 80GB PS3 doesn't. I have a PS2 slim and it still works good, but it plays PS2 games as well. Now I have the PS2 Slim and a regular 80GB PS3.

I'm not getting one obviously, I'm just saying If the Slim does eventually get 100% BC then it will piss on the fire of everyone with a 20GB/60GB model. Including myself to be honest. Besides, here in Europe Sony screwed us, they gave us a emulator in the Euro 60GB's just like the USA 80GB's and hoped we wouldnt notice. I wouldnt care about that slyness but it fucked with 2 of my favourite PS2 games of all time: Tekken Tag Tournament and MGS3.

The PS2 system is dead and clunky to me. Believe me, there are people out there that hate the idea of having a shelf full of clunky machines to play their backlog library of games.
When I got the PS2, I put the PS1 aside, due to the backwards compatibility. Earlier in the life, I played Final Fantasy 9 on the PS2, which was a PS1 game.
People want to keep the library of their old favorites, yet keep their setup simple with one or two pieces of electronics. That's my view.

well said man.i agree with u.taking away b/c was sony's biggest mistake.u know the 120gb hardrive for the ps3 slim is upgradable.there is a rumor that sony is making a 250gb ps3 slim,like what the hell is the point of that unless it has something special like b/c.i think sony is giving us a choice to buy the 120gb or the 250 gb with b/c for more money ofcourse. that would be a smart move.if the 250gb does not have b/c then i think it is pointless, like 120 is upgradable.

Yes. Also, I can just upgrade my 60 gig PS3 in the future with a new hard drive that's bigger, should my 60 gig run out.
Maybe next year in 2010, Sony can opt for a core system at $199, and the upper system at $299 with backwards compatibility. After all, as we learn to produce imitations that are cheaper and efficient,
Sony needs to also know that it's the software, not the hardware that should last. After all, why would I have to put up with a clunky-old hardware to play older games?

the only reason i dont like that sony took out backwards compatibility is when i want to play game series... like all of the metal gear games or god of war games... its really annoying.. but sony doesnt even have the decency to atleast release a metal gear package for ps3 that has all the games you can play on ps3 or atleast release the games online for download.

Actually 80's and 40's are just as prone to YLOD as the 60's, Its just Sony trying to justify the new breed of PS3's.
This is what the problem is.
Do people buy a Blu-ray player to watch DVDs? No. Can it play DVDs? Yes..
CONVENIENCE and overall a better experience
I'm sure if Sony were that hellbent on stumping out backwards compat then the 60GB wouldve been the only console ever able to play PS2 games, its obviously coming back, just people wont buy the 120GB slims if B/C plans leak.

I don't think so. The PS2 is still popular despite it's age, so Sony probably removed BC for the sake of increasing PS2 sales (if the PS3 supports PS2 games then there is little to no reason to buy a PS2). BC is not coming back, live with it.
