Anderson Silva is a true martial artist. I admit I don't particularly love him as a fighter but I respect the admiration he has for the arts. He has studied and tried to learn from many masters. It isnt all about just fighting in the UFC. He seems to want the knowledge just for the sake of having it. If I was able to learn from the best I'd take those lessons too. Regardless of whether or not they can be implemented in the cage. The Arts are fascinating.
This should affirm how good Segal is. First white man to open a aikido dojo in Japan, and now he is helping (arguably) the best MMA fighter out there get better. That speaks volumes.
Although Aikido has lots of tools to offer a fighter, it can be very one-dimensional. I'm not disputing the validity of the aikido, just that in MMA; fights can be won very fast over a knock out. Which one means that there is lots of power invested in a attack, that can be very difficult to block, ergo, hard to take control and submit. I love, however, the technique seagal used that holds the nose...very un-comfortable.
okay people seagal would not be able to beat silva in a fight.. the only reason why silva was acting like he was was because #1) he was being polite #2) he allowed seagal to apply whatever he wanted.. and i guess possibly #3) seagal is a fat giant... some of the things seagal may show could be useful for silva, but all in all i dont think experienced mma fighters should pay too much attention to seagal's teachings.. they may screw up the fighters style. a style thats already working for them
@nomadicsx1 or i could not waste my time and maybe use that time and effort into a different martial art.. like maybe becoming a black belt in BJJ which would be much much more effective in a real fight.. and if i wanted to learn a throwing martial art i'll take Judo over this any day.. when do you ever here "this is the such and such champion of the world, he is a master in aikido!!!" you will never hear that, sry
@rloft123 I would love to see you up against an Aikido expert. It's about defence not attack. And there's no Wing Chun champ in MMA. Is Wing Chun crap? What kick boxing? Any decent Aikido specialist would own a kick boxer ...
@rloft123 Yes he would. he fights till death. you people think sport fighting is the same as real life til death fighting? your dumb and stupid. Segal is a killer with his hands.
@mrwhatever213 the only thing you could add into real life fighting that mma doesnt involve is kicks when someone is on the ground, biting, and cheap shots.. all of which an mma fighter could use along with his already existing combat experience if he is ever caught in a real fight outside the cage... all in all if a experienced mma ground fighter gets segal down and beats his face in it doesnt matter how much segal will fight to the death, hes fucked.. nice try though
@marekmaxpabianice it's useless, that's why they train together. makes sense. not trying to be a ssatrams, but silva and his camp have them training together for some reason, and it's not because its useless.

@OoInservienteoO I absolutely agree with your statement "the problem is the fighter"...
I personally took many years to gain the confidence I needed to be effective. Now I have the confidence to face anyone. I studied Aikido. I thought it was baloney when I started, but I stuck with it anyway. Now I couldn't imagine using anything else. I'm sure it's that way with all martial arts.
@TheRogueMonk - Your comment about Seagal not doing Aikido is the biggest load of pure crap I have ever heard. It's so stupid I can't even reply to it. Do you understand what Aikido is?? Do you know Seagal was trained by Hiroshi Isoyama (8th dan by O'sensei at 42). Do you know what Aikido is? Tell me what it is? Go and read Harry Potter books instead and take up magic. I'm out. Video is on youtube if you search hard enough for it.
aikido is more for self defense measures say if someone tries grabbing you because maybe its just me but i wouldnt attempt any of that stuff if ive engaged someone in a fight
At the end of the day, I'd like to see anyone in the comments who shit talks Seagal take him in a fight. I guarantee you, you'll be on the ground, with two broken arms and a smashed collar bone within 10 seconds. LOL!
And at the end of the day, MMA and UFC have rules that have to be followed, which is why people say Akido is so impractical for MMA. Put Steven against any MMA fighter in a fight not regulated by rules or limits on where you can strike an opponent and I bet Seagal beats them all
@TooBokoo if steven segal was physically fit.. and trained mma.. he would maybe have been able to do something.. but i think the move setts of mma is so huge that aikido is not enough.. i think aikido is great supplement to mma.. if people decide o learn.. but aikido is not a fighting martial arts.. its for correcting yourself.. its a way .. its not aikijujutsu
Anytime some one says that they are a master of a martial art (aikido, krav magae, Kung fu, whatever) but they don't wanna do MMA because of philosophical reasons, it really is a total cop-out. What it means is deep down they know they don't have the skills to survive or teach others to survive something like MMA
MMA is like the testing ground for practical Martial Arts. So far there is only kick boxing, greco raman wrestling, Shoot wrestling, Brazilian Jui jitsi, and maybe a little judo (and the way the fighter is able to mix these arts effectively). If Aikido was practical, then we would see it in the mix.
@MrPudster1 no i am in the mma (very amateur) and aikido is not pratical , you can do krav magga but again , its dificult to apply those techniques under the ring rulez .. or octogon... in my opinion the is one martial art that could be good in mma ... kong fu... because is very defensive , but normaly kung fu people dont liike to compete because and i quote "kung fu isnt a martial art is a way of life" and i agree
@tiagotre1 Fair enough :) I just started taking jui jitsu classes, and its fun stuff. Im very new in mma, but I also heard that martial arts like karate, thai kwan do, and kung fu are good to start developing form and balance. but its not cool that a kung fu master would be confident in his martial arts effectiveness, but not be willing to demonstrate it.
Seagal can't adapt to the fact that Anderson is a south paw and is not used to switching stance in order to step across. That is the weakness of the instructor, not the student. He is not training him for Aikido.
I would like to see Seagal mop the floor with Joe Rogan...and any other fuck who thinks they are tough.,i once saw this guy at an exhibition and three persons whent at him seriously he actually had them all on the floor in a minute, and they where experiensed fighters.
7th dan in aikido and he's just a product? based on that assessment everyone who moves from other countries to America are the same, for some reason I don't see how you assessment can be correct, Knowledge is meant to be taught, if the knowlegde you possess is not taught that knowlegde will be lost forever... every teacher has their own way of teaching which makes their methods unique.
Makes me sad to see seagal no longer in the aikido circle.I know years ago when he was young an slim he was unreal at aikido but at his age now that's when he truly would be in his prime.aikido is a smart martial art the older you get the better an wiser you train an become.after all o'sensei the founder of aikido developed this martial art for that reason alone.I know mma fighters think there's nothing that can match there sport but that's exactly wat it is sport an everyone in sport has to re
Akido is effective as long as you stay dedicated if you don't then you shouldn't even be talking about how effective martial arts are if you can't stay dedicated.
aikido is actually a weak martial art and it takes someone who is psychically bigger like seagal to make it effective. Seagal is actually a bully and needs his ass kicked by someone his own size and weight (if you can actually find someone that fat).
@kondrath1967 you never learnt any martail arts , right? Dont have any idea what they are for, what is the difference beetwen them and what is the similarity. First, let me tell you. In martal arts size doesnt matter. Look at Bruce Lee"s movie in which he fights with Jabbar. Second. There is no "weak martial art". But, please, read about martial arts, first.
Totally agree with you Jaypee024...... aikido is not an easy art but once mastered is lethal .UFC is all entertainement and thats what we human beings love entertainement .Aikido is an art an art to kill and those who dont know much about this art should spend some time learning about it. was in Japan for a year going in different Dojos to learn more about aikido... as a 3rd dan Judo black belt i can definitly tell you that aikido is deadly but was humbled by the kindest of their practioners..
UFC n marital arts r bit different things cuz in real martial arts u can attack n defend urself in anyway u want. u can even use ur fingers to poke the eyes of an opponent, in one of the movie i saw bruce lee biting the opponent wen he had no way out. He said "u have to train every part of ur body" not just the fancy moves.
@tool123451 Yeah really! A hammer fist strike is the same as a chop. Only difference is that the fist is closed. However, the hammer fist and the chop both use the same striking surface of the hand.
@Iamonepercent - LOL - folk usually think that until they're lying on a tarmac bed with a nice view of the sky. Aikido is awesome, but I prefer Jujitsu. It's not as elegant, in fact it's brutal. And the humiliation is total, because the joint locks go all the way to break. However, until you've experienced your own autonomic nervous system causing you to throw your own body into gymnastic moves to avoid extreme joint pain, I wouldn't expect you to understand but, trust me, it's very, very real.
@Iamonepercent watch out people we got a super badass here. I am truly, utterly impressed by this train of thought who puts guns into every subject when there has been no mention of them at all.
@osensei2987 well of course fighting is "forbidden", since only people who have problems start fights for no reason. Every decent instructor of any martial art tells his students not to fight unless as a last resort. But Aikido has nothing forbidden when it comes to protect yourself or someone else.
steven seagal is the real deal this guy grew up in japan and started learning at a very young age he has studied and mastered the skill of aikido he is a 7th degree and i beleive there are very few in the world being it is such a dificult form of martial arts so my respects to this man and all who master any martial art
I also want to clear out this simple fact: there is a difference between sports and martial arts. And MMA is sports. This doesn't mean that the martial arts comprising MMA are not effective in real life, no. But it does mean that there are lots of differences between traditional martial arts and sports martial arts. Aikido is not a sport, and will never be one.
There is nothing wrong with Aikido, and from watching the UFC there are certainly Aikido techniques that are worthwhile. I studied it for several years myself, and though it may not be as effective in a one to one fight as jui-juitsu or good striking it does have some very important lessons to teach MMA fighters. Moving in many directions, and maintaining your balance, or "one point" in a sense. To dismiss any good, or worthwhile teaching, would make a great MMA fighter a fool.
so far as a big guy who puts weight on around his gut as he gets old,,,ever see a power lifter with cut abs? how about a silverback gorilla,,,I've know & met many older guys with a "fat" gut....& many when you {politly} give that gut a poke ,that gut doesn't give, because much of that "fat" is muscle tissue, ask any surgeon who's operated on guys like that they'll tell you they when thru a few scalpels to to where they got to go

he is fast, man i dont understand why he didn´t start some diet and go to the gym,if he loss some weight he will be more fast and everything.he can do it
@davejones8 This is quite possibly the dumbest comment ever. Aikido is PURELY defensive and NOT a combat/competitive sport. There are no competions in Aik.
@TheSaifDizzle hahah wow youur an idiot...u can compete in real fighting with an martial art,...if its defensive ok defend yourself....u knwo nothing ok all martail arts are for defense//if akido was pure defense then he could never hurt anyoine,,,there is always some offense.....you my friend are the stupidest yet
@jaypee024 i love how people always say about how aikido could kill a MMA fighter but there is no record of it ever happening ever in the street or anything.
@jaypee024 "real life" eh? well let's look at what the people whose jobs are to excel in a life-or-death cqc situation. Marines and army. and what do they learn? bjj, wrestling, boxing muay-thai. not aikido bullshit. all the "entertainment" sports right? just show me a single video where aikido is used in a competitive or real situation. there are none, they don't exist. u are overflowing with stupidity.if u have any actual evidence of this being used on video pls show it and i'll change my tune
@robertmlock that's bullshit, wrist locks are perfectly legal in ufc. small joints are fingers and toes. reason aikido isn't used is because despite the many stupid 'demonstrations' put on youtube, controlling someone by merely holding the wrist is not feasible. at all.
@robertmlock haha trying to hold on to some dignity eh? you're right, there are plenty of people like you who are blissfully ignorant and would like to keep it that way. forgive me for trying to enlighten them. u shouldn't let this type of thing get under your skin, just don't go making stuff up when you've no idea what you're talking about
@robertmlock - Look stop this CRAP. I have been doing Aikido for 16 years. I went up against a BJJ black belt for a mess around. I was finished within seconds. Stop comparing Aikido with MMA. Aikido has it's own uses and benefits, but against the UFC, MMA and BJJ it is useless. I'm sorry if that offends anyone but it's just the way the wind blows I'm afraid. Get over it. I now train in BJJ too for the past 2 years.
@robertmlock - maybe, but I have passed the US navy seals combat course. I love Aikido. Steven Seagal's aikido is a huge inspiration to me. MMA is based on Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Gracie Jiu Jitsu proved itself over again in the UFC when it was style vs style. Accept it and move on. Aikido has some excellent moves but don't try and pretend it to be something it is not. The ground is another world and Aikido does not address the ground. Gracie jiu jitsu wrecked every single art.
@acquiesce100 i know this guy who has been riding a bike for 15 years. he still drags his feet when he's going slow ie he's got shit technique and learned it the wrong way since the beginning. Now he tells s people he's got 15 years biking experience, and people wonder why he still drags his feet. maybe you got 16 years of shit aikido pal, maybe you did dance moves. Just cause your aikido is shit, don't mean the same for Seagal.
@ccdev - I think you have misunderstood what I was saying. FYI, my instructors dan grade was signed by O'sensei. I have also visited Seagal's dojo in Osaka 3 years ago. Seagal is the best I have seen. Maybe I am crap, who knows. I don't think so. Aikido is great, but don't make it out it is something it is not. It has its own benefits.
@acquiesce100 i still woudl like to see steven segal try to spar with someone... cause his aikido is different its not same aikido.. its same aikido but he does more things with it... so you cant compare yourself to him if your doing aikido curiculum only
@TheRogueMonk - I agree. Steven Seagal's Aikido is very different. As far as I'm concerned Steven Seagal's aikido is the best out there. He is the best Aikidoka I have seen. I visited his school in Osaka 3 years ago. It was the absolute best I saw in Japan. For me, there is nobody better in Aikido than him.
@acquiesce100 WELL aikido is aBOUT do the path the way... if you want fighting and inflcitaing damage you have to choose another martial art.. even aikijujutsu is not about killing or damaging.. but i think you like aikijujutus better .
@TheRogueMonk - Your point has no logic to it. Who said I wanted fighting? Aikido is budo. Do you know the correct definition of budo? O'sensei always said Aikido is a martial art and If you don't think it is go and take up dancing or something. The problem is most Aikidoka have read too many spiritual books. They are blinded and confused. . When did O'sensei say it was not a martial art? Seagal always said "Aikido was born wrong in the USA"
@acquiesce100 aikido i do aikido.. and aikido has in its principal difference from aikijujutsu that it is a do.. first it was aiki no michi .. and before tha tit was something else .. o sensei became spiritual and decided to change the aikijujutsu curiculum ..
morihei was a great master of aikijujutsu and at his time held hte highest rank in it.. he helped takeda ..and after that aikido was born.
if you watch his vieos he talks a lot about what aikido is about...
@TheRogueMonk and your point is??? When did he say Aikido was not a martial art or not Budo. Where do you get your info. You read too many books written by spiritual teachers. I bet you have never been to Japan and I bet you have never spoke to his top students such as K Tohei. If you read the first book on Aikido which Tohei published according to the founders approval, you will see O'sensei clearly says Aikido is a martial art. You have read to much fancy ideology. He was spiritual, so?
@TheRogueMonk - What you on about? Stop reading your books which are full of theory and do the practice. If you think Aikido can beat a black belt in BJJ that's up to you. I'm telling you from my experience. I don't let my ego take over. I accepted it and started to train BJJ to add it to my game. You are talking about a martila art that made every other art look useless. Go and watch UFC 1, 2 and 3. ACCEPT IT.
@TheRogueMonk - You go about all this theory regarding bettering yourself etc that O'sensei talked about. I think you forget that O'sensei was happy for Koichi Tohei to go up against a skeptical american journalist and have it filmed. It was ego, to try and prove Aikido is the best. I thought Aikidoka aren't concerned about who is the best and ego etc. I have met more ego driven Aikidoka than in any other art.
@TheRogueMonk - If you mean the video of Tohei taking on the skeptical american journalist? Yes, it is on Youtube. Note the fact that Tohei was a 6th dan in Judo too. I think it was after this video that the relationship with Tohei and O'sensei began to crumble. Don't quote me on it though, I could be wrong. I was told O'sensei was not happy with him after this clip. I think his Judo helped him out big time. This why I think Seagal's Aikido is far superior. Forget the rest.
@Chaossentry1 - I still train Aikido. I think you are trying to make out it is something which it is NOT. There is a great video on youtube which explains Aikido's concept vs MMA. If you think it works in the UFC go and enter it and see for yourself. You have any idea what it is like to go up against these super athletes?? Your training is probably limited to the dojo only. I'm sorry if it upsets you.
@watts4200 - If you read the whole story Silva talks about it. There is no doubt Seagal has skills. Maybe Anderson wasn't expecting him to be so good in reality. Seagal's Aikido is unique. You will not get this type of Aikido other than from him directly or the schools where his students teach. It is a fact. I searched for years until i finally packed my bags and flew to Osaka. It confirmed everything I thought. His school was the best, plain and simple.
@Wisher337 - It's all about what you know. It's not about how long you have trained. I still love Aikido but I don't pretend it is something which it isn't.
@acquiesce100 Dont say its useless lol It was you! Its was you that loss not the art you study in.lol No one martial is better then the other... You lost dont blame it on anybody or any thing it was you!
@ken162008 - Sure. I'd like to see you go up against a BJJ black belt. You won't know what has hit you. You wouldn't get your breath. Sorry if it upsets you. I was being honest. I said Aikido has its own benefits. Don't try and make out it is something which it is not. I don't care. I don't let my ego get in the way. It did me a favour because I now train BJJ for 2 years. I still train Aikido.
@acquiesce100 Idc what you say I still think its was you that lost not the art you study in.lol A long time ago in the 1800s In Japan there Its was a team of people that Practice in judo that beat the people that Train in Ju-jitsu.... What im trying to say man oh never mind you would understand lol
@ken162008 - ok big mouth if you think you are so good, let's see you do it. Film it. You are a total twonk. There is a vid on youtube where a guy explains what I'm saying. I've even found it for you:

At the end of the day, I'd like to see anyone in the comments who shit talks Seagal take him in a fight. I guarantee you, you'll be on the ground, with two broken arms and a smashed collar bone within 10 seconds. LOL!
And at the end of the day, MMA and UFC have rules that have to be followed, which is why people say Akido is so impractical for MMA. Put Steven against any MMA fighter in a fight not regulated by rules or limits on where you can strike an opponent and I bet Seagal beats them all
TooBokoo 4 weeks ago
@TooBokoo if steven segal was physically fit.. and trained mma.. he would maybe have been able to do something.. but i think the move setts of mma is so huge that aikido is not enough.. i think aikido is great supplement to mma.. if people decide o learn.. but aikido is not a fighting martial arts.. its for correcting yourself.. its a way .. its not aikijujutsu
TheRogueMonk 4 weeks ago
Anytime some one says that they are a master of a martial art (aikido, krav magae, Kung fu, whatever) but they don't wanna do MMA because of philosophical reasons, it really is a total cop-out. What it means is deep down they know they don't have the skills to survive or teach others to survive something like MMA

I love it when people say aikido doesn't work!

MrPudster1 1 month ago
@MrPudster1 no i am in the mma (very amateur) and aikido is not pratical , you can do krav magga but again , its dificult to apply those techniques under the ring rulez .. or octogon... in my opinion the is one martial art that could be good in mma ... kong fu... because is very defensive , but normaly kung fu people dont liike to compete because and i quote "kung fu isnt a martial art is a way of life" and i agree
tiagotre1 1 month ago
@tiagotre1 Fair enough :) I just started taking jui jitsu classes, and its fun stuff. Im very new in mma, but I also heard that martial arts like karate, thai kwan do, and kung fu are good to start developing form and balance. but its not cool that a kung fu master would be confident in his martial arts effectiveness, but not be willing to demonstrate it.

Seagal can't adapt to the fact that Anderson is a south paw and is not used to switching stance in order to step across. That is the weakness of the instructor, not the student. He is not training him for Aikido.

@osensei2987 well of course fighting is "forbidden", since only people who have problems start fights for no reason. Every decent instructor of any martial art tells his students not to fight unless as a last resort. But Aikido has nothing forbidden when it comes to protect yourself or someone else.

@acquiesce100 i still woudl like to see steven segal try to spar with someone... cause his aikido is different its not same aikido.. its same aikido but he does more things with it... so you cant compare yourself to him if your doing aikido curiculum only
TheRogueMonk 4 weeks ago
@TheRogueMonk - I agree. Steven Seagal's Aikido is very different. As far as I'm concerned Steven Seagal's aikido is the best out there. He is the best Aikidoka I have seen. I visited his school in Osaka 3 years ago. It was the absolute best I saw in Japan. For me, there is nobody better in Aikido than him.
acquiesce100 3 weeks ago
@acquiesce100 WELL aikido is aBOUT do the path the way... if you want fighting and inflcitaing damage you have to choose another martial art.. even aikijujutsu is not about killing or damaging.. but i think you like aikijujutus better .
TheRogueMonk 3 weeks ago
@TheRogueMonk - Your point has no logic to it. Who said I wanted fighting? Aikido is budo. Do you know the correct definition of budo? O'sensei always said Aikido is a martial art and If you don't think it is go and take up dancing or something. The problem is most Aikidoka have read too many spiritual books. They are blinded and confused. . When did O'sensei say it was not a martial art? Seagal always said "Aikido was born wrong in the USA"
acquiesce100 3 weeks ago
@acquiesce100 aikido i do aikido.. and aikido has in its principal difference from aikijujutsu that it is a do.. first it was aiki no michi .. and before tha tit was something else .. o sensei became spiritual and decided to change the aikijujutsu curiculum ..
morihei was a great master of aikijujutsu and at his time held hte highest rank in it.. he helped takeda ..and after that aikido was born.
if you watch his vieos he talks a lot about what aikido is about...
TheRogueMonk 3 weeks ago
@TheRogueMonk and your point is??? When did he say Aikido was not a martial art or not Budo. Where do you get your info. You read too many books written by spiritual teachers. I bet you have never been to Japan and I bet you have never spoke to his top students such as K Tohei. If you read the first book on Aikido which Tohei published according to the founders approval, you will see O'sensei clearly says Aikido is a martial art. You have read to much fancy ideology. He was spiritual, so?

TheRogueMonk 3 weeks ago
@TheRogueMonk - What you on about? Stop reading your books which are full of theory and do the practice. If you think Aikido can beat a black belt in BJJ that's up to you. I'm telling you from my experience. I don't let my ego take over. I accepted it and started to train BJJ to add it to my game. You are talking about a martila art that made every other art look useless. Go and watch UFC 1, 2 and 3. ACCEPT IT.
acquiesce100 3 weeks ago
@TheRogueMonk - You go about all this theory regarding bettering yourself etc that O'sensei talked about. I think you forget that O'sensei was happy for Koichi Tohei to go up against a skeptical american journalist and have it filmed. It was ego, to try and prove Aikido is the best. I thought Aikidoka aren't concerned about who is the best and ego etc. I have met more ego driven Aikidoka than in any other art.

@acquiesce100 might be true.
