If you want a cheap quick available tool to get that bearing out, what you do is put the disc back on BACKWARDS and bolt it up just a couple of turns on the thread and use it as a slide hammer.
I have found that turning the brake drum around and putting on a couple of wheel nuts loosely and then using the Drum as a slide hammer works really well. It never takes me more than a couple of goes to get an axle out. You are also using it in line with the axle. In my opinion Hitting down on that contraption at 90 degrees to the axle with a heavy sledge hammer is likely to do all sorts of serious damage including possible cracking of the diff housing.
is the 1998 sl2 saturns the same hub/bearing combo like this...asking because no one at outozzone knew off hand. I have a left side oil output seal which is leaking and im being told a bearing could make it leak again, if not evaluated by professionals & replaced. just asking 4 more bearing insight while i gather repair data.
Thanks for the tip. For the front ones with the driveaxles through them, I can see where a slide hammer might be a better idea. I've never had to much issue with these, as there is room to tap 'em out. The 99-04 Grand Ams have aluminum steering knuckles to save weight. These corrode to the steel wheel bearings, making them a pain in the butt to remove. Liquid Wrench and some patience gets these out, but the part on mine was destroyed when I got it out. the flinger was still inside the knuckle.
PB blaster is pretty lousy, about the same as WD-40. Google: "pb blaster 214 pounds" for a comparison.
Liquid wrench is almost twice as good. Surprisingly the best penetrant is a cheap 50/50 mix of Acetone and ATF, has four times the penetrating action as PB blaster.
I had to use a large press on front wheel bearings. When it broke free it sounded like an explosion. This is after using a truck slap hammer and heat. This was on my Saturn Vue Redline. Some of these bearings are impossible, for an above average home-mechanic. If you have a problem, know when to quit

Hey richpin, got a 92 sl and my passenger front hub bearing is going out, can i use this same procedure for the front as well? Thanks
saturncrzy 1 year ago
@saturncrzy Not on the front because the bearing is pressed in not bolted like the rears.
