People watched him dance on his toes and didn't understand how hard Cuevas hit people. Big power in every punch, every time. He'd hit opponents on the arms and didn't care. Cuevas didn't KO many people in dramatic fashion the way Hearns did, he broke them the way Ernie Shavers or a young Sonny Liston did.
I think thats because Hearns was more accurate of a puncher. His KO's were from one punch because they landed straight on the chin. But Cuevas had more natural power and would throw punchs anywhere.
In the 3rd and final fight against Angel Espada he broke Espada's jaw in 2 pieces and broke 2 ribs while he sustained a dislocated jaw. Brutal. It was a shame he did not have some defense and more hand speed.
He had a short prime, he lost a lot as a young up and comer and then after Hearns knocked him out he wasn't the same fighter, but during his prime he pretty much obliterated the top ten ranked welterweights in the world. He didn't just win against them he ended a few of their careers. And Cuevas didn't duck anybody. He fought all comers, right up to Tommy Hearns. He was a great champion.
backus was a real good fighter, not great.he fought everyone including the great jose napoles who he cut up and stopped for the welterweight title.billy was carmen basilios nephew.
no excuse-only fact, Concerning the hearns cuevas match/// Pipino inexcusable wearing of leather soul shoes had him skating on ice on the funky canvas while tommy had total grip with his rubber bottoms/// switch shoes and history is rewritten-just one of the many what would of been moments in time
Thanks for posting. Read about this fight when I was a kid. Cuevas was awesome, Backus must have felt like he was being hit with a scaffold pole. We dont get to see fighters like Cuevas in London.
My god! Watching Cuevas fight I can really SEE what all the fuss was about: Yes, he was probably one of the HARDEST hitting Machines out there! But, also, Carlos Palomino was right: "Pipino MISSES you even when you're STANDING STILL!" I bet he MISSED more punches than ANY FIGHTER in ANY weight, period! Good GRIEF!!! Just count the punches he misses in ALL of his fights!!! EMBABRASSING!
The Welterweight division was a completely different animal at this time.Almost Civil! And then 1980 rolled around and the monsters overwhelmed the past."Stomp!"
Jose Pipino Cuevas was a great champion in the prime of his career. But sooner or later someone comes along and kicks our rear end; Tommy Hearns came by later on and KOd Cuevas with a devastating punch; after that fight, it appeared that Cuevas was not the same fighter. He stll fought a few more times then he retired.
Technically speaking,Cuevas was one of the hardest hitters in WW history but his power punches were those looping hook type blows that are only Really Good against guys that were around his own size.Hearns was too tall for Cuevas to be effective with these types of punches. He would've needed a Great Overhand Right to have a chance against Hearns. That's how you KO guys much taller than you. With a Powerfull Overhand Right or left.Management should've known to avoid Hearns.
Cuevas took the fight without knowing anything about Thomas Hearns. I'm sure he would've thought about it twice had he known what he was against... Unlike Roberto Duran, who knew who he was going against and still took a chance...
@bobbyd7085 Duran who was shorter than Cuevas also beat the crap out of him in 4 rounds. The fact is Cuevas was a limited rather slow fighter with a strong punch. Anybody that was a skilled boxer with a good punch had little trouble against him. In this fight Backus was also a slow limited fighter so Cueves was able to hit him. Backus, noted for his toughness and strong chin was not floored or badly hurt in this fight despite the fact he suffered a broken bone near his eye.
@tbcass Hi.This is bobbyd with a new channel due to yt not letting me log in as bobbyd anymore. Yes.I am 40 years old and i know quite a bit about boxing, especially boxers from the past due to the fact that i used to follow boxing 10x more than i do these days. I think that after the hearns fight, cuevas was never the same again. If he had fought duran around 1979 or on aug 2nd of 1980 instead of hearns, boxing fans would've had the treat of a lifetime. It would've been a battle.Likely, duran by ud.
@RobsterRulzDude0518 I'm 65 and was an avid boxing fan from the mid 50's when Carmen Basilio was champ to the early 90's. I went to high school with Billy Backus and I my father was friends with Carmen Basilio. Boxing is as much mental as physical. After Hearns beat Cuevas, Pipino lost his confidence. As far as Duran vs Cuevas in the late 70's I believe that the result would have been much the same. Cuevas' style was made to order for Duran. Cuevas' looping punches would never have landed.
@tiburochako i agree. hearns was probably around 160 lbs entering the ring while cuevas, probably 150 or so. the reach and the height advantages were the most definitive advantages for hearns in they're bout though. Cuevas's management should've avoided Hearns like the plague. I would've had i managed Cuevas.
Small ring because Cuevas was no dancers.Pretty much a straight forward plodder which was compesated for by BONE CRUNCHING POWER!!!! check out some of the other vids f him on here and see the damage he does to some pretty decent fighters.
Pipino Cuevas tubo pánico escenico frente a Tomy Hearns.(hace 20 años aprox.)
Watching cuevas beat up on bums does not impress me. He looks slow, doesn't throw combinations and is easy to hit. The welterweight division must have been at it's historical lowest for him to have 8 title defenses. Would have lost to either palamino or benitez..........
well the thing was that everyone knew Pipino's style and wanted to beat him at it, without using much technique... fighting pipino's fight. Brawling with pipino wasn't a good thing to do, even if the division was at its lowest, it was because he must've had something the others didn't: power!!!
But that's the way the Duran was and it's fights like those that have to get real gladiators to reinvent themselves after tasting defeat. Duran had a long career (50 years) so of course he was an excellent fighter. Stubborn if you ask me. That was his style; Pipino's style was a "Do or die" there was no inbetween's with him. I think Duran showed some of that when he didn't want to chase leonard. But not with Hearns, where he openly quit.
I don't think so, had he been a better fighter he would've outdone Tommy Hearns, neither pipino nor Duran did it. Duran even ran away saying "NO MAS". Ever heard of Salvador Sanchez??
duran at welterweight would have destroyed hearns, he only trained 2 weeks for hearns and had to take of 4st in weight. the no mas thing well like duran said he wasn't going to chase that clown for 15rounds. sal sanchez great champion but no duran.
Why did duran only train for 2 weeks? Is that what great champions do show up to big multimillion dollar fights out of shape? Hearns sure in the hell showed up didn't he? I don't think not training hard is an excuse for any champion. every time duran showed up out of shape he let fans like you down..
Even Wilfredo loudmouth Gomez said that he had been slightly out of shape when he lost to Sanchez... Undertraining is not something to do when fighting for a world championship. Especially if you're moving up on division.
Pipino was too inactive. After he loses his belt to Hearns he is only 22 years of age. Yet fights only 4 bouts in 3 1/2 years? Why? A busier Pipino gets the SAME result against Duran. Pipino is still one of my all time favorites though.
