Yep best place for cycling in NZ apart from Hawks bay on the east coast of the north island.

Unfortunately Christchurch is overrun with cars at rush hour now. Some of the credit for that must go to Christchurch City Councilors.
For some reason there is still free all day car parking very close to the centre of Christchurch. This encourages the use of cars and long distance commuting to Christchurch.
I fail to see why people who don't pay rates in Christchurch should get all day free parking in the heart of Christchurch.

I just moved back to CHCH after being away for 20 years, forgot how cold it gets in winter. But absolutely the best city to live in, very safe and friendly. Especially the bus service, compared to Wellington. If your planning to visit CHCH, please do, you won't be disappointed. I should be an ambassador:-)

ChristChurch is better then Wellington as there are more Tourist and more plaza areas and more parks
THere is also a good sized out doors market in the cathdral square
And yes lots of out door dinning
Night time however,it is mad max beyond thunder dome however all the cities in NZ are pretty much like that in the late evenings
However,during the day time it becomes a quant little charming tourist town again

Unfortunately Christchurch is overrun with cars at rush hour now. Some of the credit for that must go to Christchurch City Councilors.
For some reason there is still free all day car parking very close to the centre of Christchurch. This encourages the use of cars and long distance commuting to Christchurch.
I fail to see why people who don't pay rates in Christchurch should get all day free parking in the heart of Christchurch.

Haha I've lived here my whole life, pretty cool place but theres heaps of bogans and apparently we have a reputation as being racist, particularly to asians. In general though its pretty chilled out and we have a mint rugby team.

Dunedin is more relaxed than Christchurch. Christchurch is changing every year as there are more cars on the road, so don't think this video reflects Chch in 2009. The council encourages people to use their cars by allowing free all day parking in the inner city.

Christchurch has traffic jams at rush hour now. So cycling is probably the fast way to get home from work now. If you want a relaxed city go to Dunedin or avoid the 3 major cities.

christchurch isnt bad at all , your most likely to get stabbed and robbed in auckland city than anywere else in nz ,,and also has the highest polynesian/maori population than any other city in the WORLD,nowhere could compete to the south auckland struggle even east aux west aux and parts of the noff shore.can be really dangerous at times.

the problem with the "no expanding outside limits" is that they are building new houses wherever they find a space, they have no backyards, close together, and traffic is becoming a bitch, also they have destroyed a historic hospital building (some say was haunted) and are destroying a historic military base. I just moved back to CHCH after being away for 20 years, forgot how cold it gets in winter. But absolutely the best city to live in, very safe and friendly. Especially the bus service, compared to Wellington. If your planning to visit CHCH, please do, you won't be disappointed. I should be an ambassador:-)
