I watched this version before I read the book so I had no expectations. I have to say that it blew me away. This movie is the reason that I read the book. Having said that it's far from perfect but it's still a great film that I take out and watch every year. It sucks that they cancelled the remake. I was really looking forward to watching a Dune movie on the big screen.
Glad to see that someone else really likes this movie. It got very unfairly dissed when it first came out, and since then there's been a kind of "received wisdom" to the effect that it's rubbish. Well I'm glad to see that orthodoxy being challenged! It's a wonderful movie - not particularly true to the book - but a great movie all the same!
I just watched this for the first time. It had wonderful potential and great sci-fi atmosphere, but it is one of the most confusing movies I've ever seen. IMDb says "In the distant future, a man appears who may be the prophet that a long-suffering galaxy has been waiting for." I never got the prophet bit from watching the movie! Even David Lynch hates this movie. That's saying something when the director hates it!
Stick to the book and this is the worst film of David Lynch's career, face it, he was suffering making this movie because he was a gun for hire by Dino to do an adaptation of the book which he is not familar with nor is he a sci-fi guy but did it for the money and wrote a script based on 3 rejected screenplays as he was forced. He was suffering big time because he went outside his comfort zone and failed, he was not meant for blockbusters in hollywood
David Lynch was an awful choice to direct this movie, it could have been Alejandro Jorodowsky or Ridley Scott to do justice to the book, this movie was confusing and fraustrating yet boring as it made me want to kill myself when it rained on Arakkis. This movie is nothing more than an ego-trip for Lynch than a true adaptation! This is only a cult classic for the WRONG reasons, it's like Showgirls in space.
@Johnlindsey289 I really like this movie a lot but I like the book more. I would like it if there were five or six versions of it because I will never get sick of this story. I wish Ridley Scott would make a remake now so we would have a Lynch version and a Scott version to watch.
As a true fanatic Dune fan i recognized this film brutally raped the novel, but i like David Lynch´s hypnotic vision of this epic sci-fi masterpiece, my favourite book and one of my favourite films of all time.
@talibanulafgan That's what spice melange is. The ultimate drug. It gives the powers the Guild Navigators has to see the future along the destination of Highliners after they fold space. Drugs would be useful if they were used wisely, wich almost never happens.
Amazing film. It's a shame the consensus seems to be that the plot is incomprehensible but I hadn't read the book before my first viewing and found it completely understandable. Not a film for the novice I guess.
I saw this for this first time as a kid when my parents took me to the drive-in. It seems like yesterday. My wife and I just watched this version and it struck me, "Is that Sean Young? Is that Virginia Madsen?" and my wife asked "Is that the guy from Desperate Housewives?" It really was cast excellently, and is still intriguing to watch now.
Sure, the special effects are a little out-dated but it is still one of my favorite films ever.
All those comments by reviewer are right on! This was one bold movie. I enjoy it everytime I watch it, and as it gets older, the Sheakespearian hammy-ness of the acting only seems better and more substantial, not to mention that for the most part the production design manages to be incredibly weird and imaginative without ever going "camp". All the costumes and interior sets are brilliant - they look totally convincingly futuristic.
I loved catching this movie on a carefree unemployed night. The ending credits was really what I caught and they're probably the most epic ending credits ever with the actors, waves crashing in the background with that awesome Toto song "Take My Hand". The funny thing is I played Dune on Sega Genesis ages ago but had never seen the movie. Glad I got to see it I enjoyed it a lot.
As a huge Star Wars fan I have to respectfully disagree with the "eat your heart out" comment. I watched Dune when I was younger and the first time I did I was very confused by the plot and even terrified of Baron Harkonnen. But I gave it another chance and was very happy I did.
This certainly one of the greatest Sci-Fi masterpieces of all time.
The version I saw when I was younger had a male narrator and still frame shots of events leading up to the movie. Is that version still available?
Actually, the "Extended Edition" is still available. You can get it new on Amazon. I got it recently for $8 at a used DVD store. The extended cut was thrown together for TV and was not approved by Lynch (its an Alan Smithee). There are shots that are from completely different scenes to pad the film. Some shots of the Fremen don't have the blue eye effect. It also leaves out some of the more gruesome scenes.
The extended cut also has the theatrical version and some behind the scenes featurettes. I got it mainly for the special features and the nostalgia since I first saw the TV cut. I would get the Extended Edition if you don't already have the theatrical cut or are nostalgic enough to want the longer version, warts and all.
I don't think my first post went through. I said that the Extended Edition is still available. You can get it new on Amazon. I got it for around $8 used. It was a TV cut that added scenes somewhat randomly. Lynch did not approve the cut. It has scenes that are clearly from different points in the film, repeated shots, and the added shots with the Fremen don't have the Blue eye effect. They also cut out the more gruesome moments with the Baron since it was a TV cut.
That is the "Disney" version and David Lynch was so disgusted with their re-edit of the intro (and a few other scenes added / removed) that he wanted Director Credit removed: So that version has Alan Smithee (sp?) as Director. Anyway both version are on a double sided DVD I got from Target. Common.
@OptimusJedi - it is available...I have that version and the cinema release without it. I prefer the release without that stuff at the beginning...I found it was completely out of character with the feel of the movie. It was added in an attempt to make the movie 'more understandable' well...I understood it just fine at 13. The collector's edition includes the version you're looking for.

Yea..considering the sheer number of high caliber actors in this its weird seeing sting there....like...why? ..just why....
i'm sure that miniseries was called Children of Dune, i have no idea if its any good or not.

True about the explanation. He should have kept the beginning from the Director's Cut, that explains the Dune Universe

A spectacular film. The liberties taken by Lynch were acceptable.
Massively confusing to someone who has not read the book, too bad, it's a complex story.
