Between Anthony Fong, Simon Yam, Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, Tony Leung, Leon Lai ect.. Hong Kong got so many good "multi-talented" actors compared to america and other countries.
@wisdomso As a native english speaker, I'm pretty certain of what I heard. Listen to when he talks about Hallyday @1:02. Instead of Hallyday he pronounced it as "阿 Holiday". Now why did you have to be so rude?
hes a very good actor and has alot of respect but how can you take him seriously when hes like 40 something and got that hair style i mean come on wtf
xD I never said it was an awesome hairstyle. I went O.O at it when i first saw it. I was just saying that that was his hair in another movie and the interview probably took place after or during that process so he looked like that. Did you see him in the turning point movie? my impression was ... emo... @_@
Man, Wong really sounds (and looks) like he's already given these answers to countless other journalists before this guy. Does anyone really buy this "acting is dangerous--we get injured" crap in this day and age? I know HK film stars haven't done the whole press junket thing for as long as they have in Hollywood, but these stories stopped holding water over here about a decade ago. Hallyday probably just has a bad back! He's old!
Wong's a fantastic actor. Not much for interviews, I guess.
You might not belive it but its true. Think about this for a second. HK action films never match the budget of American action films. HK film making crews cant afford all that good stuff that ensures safety that Americans crews can. Lets take two action packed films that are quite similar in action from both sides of the world like Tango & Cash and Hard-Boiled if you've seen those. Tango & Cash 55,000,000 USD, Hard Boiled 4,500,000 USD.
There were as much stunts in Hard Boiled if not a little more than in Tango & Cash. But Hard Boiled's budget was millions less. If you've seen Hard Boiled, imagine how dangerous filming all those sets were due to all the cheap equipment used. In the case of Vengeance, its budget was 11.5 million Euros. Sure as hell, foreign actors get paid hell of a lot less than American actors do. Why HK actors do what they do idk, but I love it.
Not sure what your point is here, so I'm wondering if you responded to my comment by mistake. I own over 2000 HK movies (DVD/VCD), so I'm aware of cost differences. But budgets don't work the same elsewhere that they do in the U.S. That $4.5 mil in HK buys more because film industry wages are lower (and no unions!), and big stars don't get huge paydays like U.S. actors because the U.S. industry has far more power to get it's films released abroad than any foreign company does in the U.S.
My comment above was strictly related to Wong's utterly by-the-book responses in this interview, and the obvious B.S. he's spinning about how dangerous it is. Again, lower budgets these days don't equate with increased risk on film sets. The film industries in other countries simply operate at a lower cost than the U.S. industry. The trade-off is that their films don't enjoy widespread saturation of top global markets the way those from Hollywood do, because the marketing machines aren't as big
So basically, European and Asian films sets are virtually as safe as those in the U.S. When Wong says people get injured, he's talking about it in the exact same way American actors do in press interviews like this, trying to make a few bumps and scratches (which go with the territory) sound like they've been put through the wringer in pursuit of their art. And that I just don't buy.
Oh yeah, and one more thing, Hard Boiled was not filmed with "cheap" equipment. It was filmed with the same kind of equipment as any Hollywood film, and safety was first and foremost, just like in Hollywood. The industry simply doesn't require $55 million to make a picture because their pictures don't return that kind of money (again, in large part because they don't enjoy wide international releases like the films from Hollywood), therefore their industry people make just livable wages.
