  • He always played something new out of the blue and that is nothing compared to the other things that he would do.

  • Is that Tiny Grimes at gtr?

  • Yeah thats him-he made this tune.

  • rach and horowitz both commented grandly on tatum

  • I swear he was not totally blind and could just about see in one eye or something. Not that it makes any difference...

  • what I can't believe is that on top of all that, he was BLIND!!!

  • ...someone innocently asked me, since I knew jazz history a little and had finished the one biography on him, "could Art Tatum read music?" Well... I accepted the question nicely and gave a shrug, I guess not too much, since he was blind he couldn't see it.

  • he could supposedly read braille music

  • nah, blind in one eye, severe cataracts in the other.

  • Thanks for the clip. Are there any other videos that have actual footage of 52nd Street and the clubs there at that time?

  • where oooooh where is the rest of this video? what is the tune he was playing called?

I must find out and get it somehow.

  • The name of the tune is "Tiny's Exercise".

  • I think it's so sad that there isnt a longer clip of the greatest pianist of all time!

  • Hey where'd you get this clip from?

  • I see this and I just want to quit piano...It's like, why do I even try.

  • OMG!!! Where is the rest of this video? What is it from? Where can I get it?

  • Ah the man who gave us Misty (one of my fave Garner tracks), and master of the concerto Rach. Liszt was one hell of a pianist and composer. His Hungarian rhapsodies are something else, crafted to expose the technically superior pianists out there. One can only dream of reaching their standards.

  • What he understood harmonically, is beyond us mortals. A true God of the piano. Thanks for this footage. I think I remember seeing this in a documentary of Oscar Peterson, the only other man worthy to be mentioned in the same breathe as Tatum.

  • True masters!! Art Tatum > Oscar Peterson > and don't forget the self taught and highly original and extremely stylistic-Errol Garner!! don't forget our classic-style master composers Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Franz Liszt just to mention a few!

  • Errol Garner too - you know yer piano!

  • It is creepy to see him actualy play...

  • Sweet. I really like the facts that accompany the video, especially #2! He is really an amazing player, never heard of him till this very evening! Wish there was more footage.

  • me too!

  • cool!

  • Why only 4 stars(for the quality of the footage?)? He deserves a Trillion stars!!!

  • Very true and great quality footage but you need at least 8 bars of music for 5 stars. ;)

  • lol

  • Thanks for pointing me to this in your message. I tried to reply but something weird happened, so I'm not sure if it was sent properly. Anyway, very nice interplay here between the musicians.
