  • Sounds like a 1950s commercial for the future.

  • This NEEDS to be HQ!

  • what if i wanted to live outside the city? in the country side. this seems like a nightmare. herding all the sheeple into the big cities and hooking them up to the centrally controlled and planed grid....

  • @rocoreb Any city in the world is the same idea "herding all the sheeple into their streets" but you walk along the streets in these cities and its full of disgusting air, trash all over the streets and soiled water supplies. If you want to live outside the city, the point is that Masdar is actually providing an energy source for you from the energy they dont use.

  • @lauraglant To call this a nightmare is ignorant to the fact that there will always be cities in the world condensing people in them, but we might aswell make them clean and sustainable.

  • also I <3 PONIES!!

  • Whats up VISCOM CLASS OF 2012!!! -Johno

  • WoW that's a dream city! I'll be the happiest person if I live there...

  • I wish I would have been born in the year 3000, when all cities are like that and the world is free from war and everybody takes care about the nature....

But well, I guess the Paradise will also look like that :)

  • we could do this all arround the world like the vunus project and the zeitgeist movement suggests in a world without money and scarcity

  • this is how the real future of the world should look like.

  • Did it say it was going to be habitable in 2010 0:41 ? Because it's 2012 and I have never heard of thise thing until today....

  • this should be almost all over the world and not just in one place, but its a great idea!

  • control of the people.

  • omg if every canadien saw this wed all be like (facepalm)

  • awesome to see all that oil money going into something sustainable. and I like the fact its muslims showing the way.

  • It's a shame they - largely women - are restricted by old religion still in UAE and many other Muslim countries. The world needs to move away from fulfilling the desires of an imaginary and focus on humanity itself, and the future of our race.

  • @rlmorgan95 someone has to clean and cook while they save the world.

  • the rest of the world.....?

  • i wish i could live there

  • That was inspiring. Similar in concept to what Atlas City, Venus Project and others like that are doing, except for being RBE internally. I hope this gets done without complications that others have discovers.

  • Looks like the middle east will finally be out of the dark ages... I like the prospects of what this city will provide and hopefully inspire other countries.

  • Woooo the Venus Project is coming alive already!!! The first city!!!!! ;)

  • Brilliant clip - thanks for sharing! John Hurt narrating, I believe. What's the programme?

  • @hayesbee Do you happen to know if there's going to be an agricultural sector?

  • @ChaosTheory369 Yup, think there were plans for sustainable agriculture. Have you tried Googling it?

  • @hayesbee Indeed, briefly, though I've found nothing related to the matter. Their site makes no mention of it either...which is why I was asking you, since it seemed you were somewhat informed about such things.

  • how did I not know about this lol

  • william edwards?

  • there sould be better cars

  • gosh... give the money to the poor.

  • Disneyland in the Desert!

  • I really want to study at that institute! Hopefully I can get on some sort of international grant!! :-)

  • please cut the background music by at least half, it's hard to hear what he's saying.

  • im from philippines and im so proud of your counrty hope ours would someday be like yours! GOODLUCK GUYS!

  • This makes American cities look like slums.

  • There's no need to be TOTAL, although obviously that would be the ultimate goal. As for being so close to downtown, so what? Think you need to do a bit more research on Masdar if you're interested in it.

  • Actually, I think they can still be zero waste, if not zero carbon. Not sure what you mean by global food supply, but Masdar is already having a positive effect on the supply chains of a number of important materials, such as concrete. Why is everyone obsessed with being zero this and zero that? Any improvement is better than nothing.

  • @hayesbee I think its important to aim for 'Zero', may it be, zero waste or carbon. The fact that your aiming for zero, will always bring you closer than to aim for a simple 'reduction'. Which is too vague and can be interpreted in ways that make people complacent.

  • @CanadianaNB If you'd have looked, you'd have seen this script is from Jan 2010. The goals changed all most as soon as the film had been made. Things have been scaled back, because of the global financial crisis, which has affected everyone, even Abu Dhabi (perhaps because it had to bail out Dubai).

  • @WTF1920 zzzzzzzz

  • @hayesbee

    whatever

  • Resource Based Economy for the whole world... this is the Future... no more primitive monetary economics.... Go RBE...GO!!!

  • @bagiee1 we need to change so much

  • Global capitalism is a moral and functional failure and not worth preserving or defending.

  • hmm...

  • Using oil money to kill oil? Why am I suspicious? And living trapped in a glass box with 50,000 motherfuckers : no thanks. The cute little cars aren't enough incentive.

  • @beesleeper Wouldn't bother me; you don't sound like much of neighbour.

  • @beesleeper Um, want it or not this is the future for mankind cities. Fully automated and zero waste of energy. I'll take that over this decaying reality we live today

  • @AlexGraphicD1 Wrong. Our failed species will go extinct.

  • @beesleeper Speak for yourself dude. I don't want to belong on that dooming part of thought. Instead i'm going to support ideas for Humanity's salvation, not rejecting them like u do.

  • This is what I see our future as. Sustainable cities, free from extreme poverty, waste, crime and religion. If the world wanted to, we could achieve it, but it's going to be tough.

  • @jamma246 careful about that lack of poverty/crime stuff ! its easier to kill the impoverished/criminals then to create a million jobs !

  • Nice to see someone is finally taking advantage of renewable energy! But I foresee Masdar only being available to the wealthy because this tech is expensive to build. Roll on the Resource Based Economy and this tech can be available to everyone!

  • @GreyPeaJim you still haven't explained who will divide up the resources ! every one cant have access to 100% of all resources..that would be too much waste on pet projects.

  • @astrialkil I think there are enough resources that everyone have what they "need". It is Money which holds us back from making these needed available to everyone.

In respect to solar power as an example, solar panels are expensive to make and therefore expensive to buy but as I understand it the resources to make them are plentiful. so take money out of the equation and all we need are resources, time and the skills.

  • @astrialkil I beleive that there are enough resources availble so thay everyone can have access to what they "need". Money is what hinders making these needed resources available to everyone.

To take solar power as an example, the panels are expensive to make because the process is complex, but as I understand it, the resources required are plentiful. So if we have the resources and time and know the process, if we take money out of the we could make solar power availble as needed.

  • @hayesbee As for 3, I wanted to share the link to the wikipedia, but it doesn't seem to be allowed. Basically, you can go there and check yourself.

About the rest, I don't care at all

  • This videos great, until about halfway when the music becomes louder than the voice. What?! I can't hear you!

  • @hayesbee that's not racist (well it's close), I think they're attacking the religions views, which effects the peoples views. Islam, by definition, is against Jews and Christians (in the same way, Christians are against all others (one of the Commandments, do not believe in other gods (Although Christianity has grown up a bit))). Gays are still killed in some areas and Woman are still forced to cover themselves up and are even beaten (because they're not on the same level as men)

  • P-E-R-F-E-C-T !!!!! there's where i will probably live forever! In a sustainable city! Hope all the world turn this toxic cities on a sustainable project, just before this chance (life) over... my life, your life, THIS IS OURS

  • must...live...there

  • A big applause to planet saving ideas!

  • people need to realise that carbon footprint cannot be changed overnight... reducing it is something everyone needs to participate in. This is a brilliant idea and exactly what's needed for others too follow... rather than wasting time and energy on wars

  • wind, water, sun... i mean its not exactly rocket science.. jesus....

  • I'd like to know how much of this can all be built without fossil-fuel inputs.. all the high tech on display. Do they have a *solar powered solar panel factory*.

(nature already does, i.e. 'a plant')

  • @walter0bz

of course they're aiming to be sustainable as possible in construction. For example, they work in a totally different way to 'normal' projects in an aim to minimise waste. And they set rigorous standards for their suppliers. And in that way they're changing entire markets: ie concrete and aluminium. Of course, some fossil fuels are being burnt to create all this, but the point is they're trying to minimise waste as much as possible.

  • @hayesbee

    >>"minimise waste as much as possible."

isn't that just being economical.. which every person already has an incentive to do

buy as little as possible and make it go as far as possible = benefit for you

  • @walter0bz They will also be able to export solar powered electricity to the Abu Dhabi grid, another way they can offset the carbon produced in construction. Just because it's not 100% perfect, that's no reason for it not to happen. It's a whole lot better than your average development.

  • @hayesbee -

Dont get me wrong: i'm all for developing solar power - i'm just concerned that people don't realize the malthusian issue, (oil-powered machines make humans not the other way round)

The dumbest thing I read is people who expect prices will just smoothly guide us into it.. when oil prices go up it will be too late. Renewables wont match the abundance we're already used to, thats what prices tell us.

"Carbon Offsets" confuse market calculations (hide its uncomfortable message)

  • @walter0bz Necessity is the mother of invention young Jedi... Think it through.

  • @walter0bz Hmmm... You are trying to overlay antiquated "opinions" onto 21st century science and technology. The technological curve is steepening almost to pure vertical. Capitalism is holding back progress for obvious reasons. So many try to hold onto ideas of the past... Locke started the idea, Smith turned it into a religion, and economists exploited Darwin's theory of evolution to fit their pursuits based on the perversions of Herbert Spencer's coining "Survival of the Fittest".

  • @walter0bz In addition, why is it that industrialized countries population growth curve plunge to a point where they turn to mass immigration? We've allowed this monetary system infused with Psychological egoism to come between us and our natural world. This invisible hand stuff is made up crap to justify greedy, self-centred pursuits. Sadly, no coord of effort on our planet results in everybody aimlessly enacting a story. With Man gone will Gorilla survive? With Gorilla gone will Man survive?

  • @hayesbee

UK is known for abundant rainfall, yet its population density puts freshwater per person the same as desert countries - we've started to need fossil-fueled desalination plants!

there's wind power, but I recall that was already used in the 18th century (sailing ships and windmills).

Fossil fuels have simply allowed many more people to live in the same area of land, for several generations.. we dont know anything else. So many in denial about whats coming.

  • @hayesbee -

    >> "solar export .. carbon offset"

just to clarify my point: market might correctly calculate that solar doesn't give you back the energy taken to make it. (extracting & forging materials, transport for specialized society to produce it, etc..)

    reactions?

[1] people like TZM/ VP claim "the monetary system is holding us back"

[2] populist politicians introduce carbon-offset,tax schemes etc.

these dont help the fact we'll have less energy: to the extent *most people wont survive*

  • earth might support 2 billion people living this way.

  • YEAH! ZEITGEIST IS COMING TO REALITY!

    JOING THE MOVEMENT!

  • THE BEST LUXUS PRISON IN THE WORLD.......200 X 200m

  • I think that the other countries must follow this initiative, maybe this project is too ambitious for other countries, but we all know that we are destroying the world with our abuses of petrol, gas, carbon... and that it is the only way to get a sustainable world. And now that we all have seen that the nuclear energy is not the future, the governments must focus all they effort supporting this initiatives and making laws to get the way to a sustainable world, to a green world.

  • @mikelsarasola -

the uncomfortable fact is, the extra energy input of fossil-fuels is whats allowed the population explosion of the industrial age. When the fuels run out, billions will die.. the only question is whether this is spread out over decades (e.g. wars as bad as WW2 lasting for the rest of the century killing 1% per year) or fewer, sharper catastrophic events.

Only china has started with the most needed step i.e. 1 child policy.

  • @walter0bz Great, so China won't be overpopulated. Just massively polluted.

  • Le città del futuro....

  • A zero-carbon self-sustaining city is certainly a technological marvel but one must also be aware that it may just be another manifestation of excessive materialism at the expense of the near slave-labour that was used to create it.

  • "University of Sustainable Technology" ? ... No! By definition, a "university" has to teach all subjects.

  • It looks pretty and all but tell me... How do you get that new couch home?

  • In about 30 years this might be where you live.

  • Looks like Qatar is doing a Masdar

  • "Pedestrian-only streets for people to interact and play... but not women who must cover their face at all time and live in the kitchen making dinner for their great husbands, unless they want to bring shame upon their family and get beaten black and blue with a (synthetic, environmentally friendly) leather belt! Allah ak bakhar AJAJAH!"

Seriously nice project, clean future city etc,

but why build it in the conflict risky, socially and culturally unstable middle east?

    Welcome suicide bombers!?

  • Thank you very much.

  • Its no Venus Project but it is MOST definitely a step in the right direction. Maybe after they see how well this city performs someone will try building one of the Circular city's from the mind of jacque fresco.

  • we need more cities like this... WAY MORE.

  • Why do I have the feeling that Masdar will just be a gated community for rich people?

  • Reduce barrel consumption? I think you're confused. They're completely open about the fact that this is for the benefit of their future economy. Which is very brave, honest and forward thinking. You think we're cash-strapped now? You wait. Let's just all sit around waiting, shall we?

  • I watch this and I die inside. Why can I not live in a place like this? Such beauty.

  • ALL the intellectual property rights? Yes, that's right. No-one else is working in green tech, are they?

  • Masdar City is just going to be another tool for making money. They're gaining all the intelectual property rights (or as many as they can) for sustainable technology, so we will still be dependent on them in the future for energy

  • "ALICIA EN EL PAIS DE LAS MARAVILLAS", QUE TAN LEJOS DE LA REALIDAD URBANA!!!

  • Part of the plan is to educate residents. You can only do so much with technology. You have to change behaviour, too. So you're quite right newisd.

  • Good work, now change the mindset of the residents and we might become civilized :)

  • Just remove all the business institutions and get rid of the use of money and NOW we're talking. That would be a true civilization...a resource based economy.

  • Until this goes global this is just a taster and a teaser. This has to be done on a global scale. TZM & TVP needs to happen ASAP & I'm working towards this. :-)

  • @TheImperar I agree. We need TVP!!!

  • Finally you love this!

  • I love this! Finally

  • How much fuel will it take to make the city?

  • Incredible, and this will be finish in about 4 years, in 2015.

  • @94kricco Final completion in 2025 actually.

  • @CarstenIQ reality is what you make real. This failed system produces murderers, rapist, drug addicts. I'm not saying this is going to be quick or easy. When over 70% of the population is starving there will be 2 choices. Give up or try. Sad that they need that. You are doing the decent thing and I respect your opinion.

  • @TheImperar

I think The Venus Project should start now. While we want only race with our friends we miss the point of living in peace.

Instead of pride focus on free time with your beloved ones, work hard on making EVERYONES life better. So you will be benefited too.

Free yourself and be able to access to knowledge, health care ,possibilities! When you can be however you want to be,free from others there will be no curropt leaders with questionable intetns to think for you.

  • you guys are so pathetic, these people are working their ass off day and night to make *something* happen, while you are hiding behind a computer talking shit.

  • "Future Cities" is soooo yesterday. Ipads, Twitter, electronic books. They are all outdated antiquated concept from the 1970s.. The future beyond our future is the past.

  • the question should be how many civilizations have to die and resurect to hit the needed level of colective conscience for this kind of projects works.

feels like trying to drive an arranged line of cats for 1 km pretending not to break the line formation. The cats might evolve to supercats with colective inteligence enough to understand that formation is the (hipotetic) correct way to move.

we overtimate our human intelligence dismissing our greedy instincts. our tendece to run off formation

  • How many people can live there?

  • @crake2 47 500 people .

  • This city is almost perfect. If they consider changing into true democracy without religious influence, then I might consider living there. Until then, good luck.

  • i want to live there!!!:O:Di have some pretty bad breathing problems and living in a city with such clean air would be awesome and ii'm use to heat so thats good:)

  • hey is uae still plan more new city

  • WHY THE NAME OF THE PERSIAN GULF HAS BEEN DELIBERATELY CHANGED TO THE FAKE NAME. DOES IT CHANGE THE REALITY????I DON'T THINK SO, WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

  • i watch this video and i realise that i have my mouth open all the time.. this is amazing and beautiful!

  • rat city

  • There is that money that you paid the sheik for gassing up your car

  • @superamerica1981 And if you ask Thelmperar, he will probably tell you "exactly, like the US, the most Capitalist country in the world, and a pretty fucked up one".

I'm always speechless when people seem to think that the country that has

the highest percentage of fire weapon violence,

    the less social mobility,

    the greatest income inequality,

the highest ratio of prison population,

one of the biggest total DEBT,

that is increasingly close to Collapse

is actually an example to follow...

  • wow, impressive...

  • Looks like the transition to the Venus Project is underway. :)

  • @saydaysago2008 For the "super-rich" maybe...

Btw, I had no idea that "climate change" was a bigger problem than "world hunger", which they didn't even mention. Make no mistake, it surely does look good, but this ain't for you buddy ;-)

Oh, and veiled women are soooo "2010-sustainable" :-/

  • Looking at how they made all the money to build this, "going green" is quite the paradox. But good for you Emirates, I'm jealous.

  • How much carbon emissions are being emitted to make the city lol.

  • @24FMatt Not as much as you'd think, they are building the renewable power sources first, i.e. power plant and wind turbines...so that they can use that to fuel construction.

  • @24FMatt I'm willing to bet that it's a lot less than would be required to tear down and re-develop our terrible rundown cities, suburbs and painted rust infrastructure which were largely designed and developed in the dark ages of the personal automobile... Thankfully, those days are now numbered... Hopefully China, India et al are taking note instead of making the same short sighted mistakes we did in the "west"... I say good luck to them ;-)

  • Há... wonder what is doing Mr. Iluminati G Bush over there...

Maybe yes they are planing living clean, whit out the rest of the planet, or maybe it is ¿Arabs aren´t aware of the new world order?

The thing is we could be living free and clean, but nobody have the guts to do it, better lisent Lady Gaga and die in your 8 hours job.

  • @TheImperar

why can't you just appretiate the modern architecture of the future development of our world

  • @nais4226

The phrase "One day all cities will be built like this" really convinced you didn't it ? ;-)

People these days... so easily fooled :-(

Think about it for a second: if you were presented this as a "rich-people, rich-countries" type of city, how would you feel ?? Pretty bad, uh ? Like "motherfuckers don't give a damn about the others...". So they tell you that it's for everyone, so you will support it.

But clearly, it uses money. And who can pay for such cities today ???

  • @nicorbit Actually, not that much. Just a few minutes ago my teacher showed us this as well. He also showed us that for the United States to do this for its major cities, it would only take a little bit over 130 billion dollars. It may seem like much, but look at how much the last tax cuts cost: over 500 billion. In my opinion, we should use money a bit more wisely. :/

  • @25293Blaze Or better yet, not use money at all... For now that we have the means to create abundance on this planet, limiting ourselves with money doesn't sound even close to "wise" :-/

I strongly encourage you to see "Zeitgeist: Moving Forward" when it's released on January 25th if you don't know what I mean... ;-)

  • @nicorbit Unfortunately, we all limit ourselves to money. Currency has been with humanity for years. :/. I'll check it out by the way. That sounds pretty interesting.

  • @TheImperar Wow I didn't know Marxists still exist.

  • @17Kuro17 You ought to be aware that using such logical fallacies tend to reflect poorly on your intellect. All social systems that have social stratification and use money generated pretty much the same aberrant behaviours (only at varying degrees).

Thelmperar is obviously a supporter of The Venus Project (which I am extremely favourable to as well) and if you take the time to study the tenets and founding principles of TVP, you'll see it is something entirely new: a needed upgrade...

  • wow i love this city all cities should have solar power

  • @TheImperar Oh, come on. Who cares how it's financed. It's great that anyone is doing it. If it turns out to be effective, it might prompt others to do similar projects.

And it's much more realistic than TheVenusProject.

  • @kurafterdea Can you kindly explain why you think Masdar City is much more realisitic than TheVenusProject? Thank you.

  • @ TheImperar It's easy to have a negative attitude - at least they're trying. Where's the UK's effort? The USA's?

  • @hayesbee

Don't worry the free market will make us a better city LMAO!

I think this is a good case for "central planning"

because it's not central planning itself that's bad, it's the misguided, delusional, corrupt politician's that are.

  • @SaM52461 Versus the misguided, delusional, corrupt business men, corporations, etc. Touche SaM52461!

  • @mbabcock111

The business men and corporations are misguided because the government floods the market with money and that gives false signals to corps, entrepreneurs, etc. That's why we have banks in the US bulldozing housing, because borrowing rates were artificially low because the government didn't let the free market function.

  • @SaM52461 I beg to differ SaM. I think you have it bassackwards. I guess its an individuals point of origin that frames their reality. The private sector corrupts government with its lobbying. Business plants political puppets to further their profiteering. I feel sorry for the vast majority who are unaware of this. The crash of '08 was perpetrated by wall street monsters; it was unmitigated greed at all levels of the market; Marx was right. Capitalism failed.

  • The private sector is responsible for all the damage to the world. I'm sure you can bang off numerous examples where their corrupt, unethical behaviour has resulted in the deaths of millions. Ethics go out the window when the profit motive overrides the system. Government is intended to protect us from tyrannical individuals in the private sector. Influences by traumatized Russians like Ayn Rand look for comfort in neo-conservatism and that's not a good thing-Greenspan understands its flaws now.

  • Now do governments "flood" the market with money because the rich and corporations find loopholes to not pay their share of taxes thus making a shortfall in revenue? This criminal behaviour creates regressive tax environments. Laissez-faire capitalism, trickle-down theory, all failed. Remember, economics is psuedo-science. It is all theory and conjecture. On a different, yet similar track, I suspect you're aware of The People's Budget advocated and supported by 70% of US citizens when polled.

  • @hayesbee the reason for this build in the country is surely to do with the riches earnt from the location of the country; on oil. this provides vast profit from nations such as the UK and USA and this money can be spent on huge ideas such as this. great idea though and as money isnt such a problem in the country, well played to them for spending it on a build like this and not on things such as a man made beach in the shape of a palm tree... ;)

  • @hayesbee Why would you have to immediatly put the negative side to the USA and the UK?

This is not Arabic effort, this is megalomillionaires investing in arab countries with money made from petroleum in the first place to make more money by selling houses and condos in such a city. Although the concept is very nice and plausible.

  • Comment removed

  • @hayesbee In case you hadn't noticed we're a little strapped for cash. Abu Dhabi has enough oil reserves to keep the emirate in the black until at least 2100. How do think they're funding this little urban wonder? Answer: with a sovereign wealth fund 99 pc of which is the proceeds of selling Oil. The best thing Abu Dhabi could do for the planet would be to drastically reduce its oil production to meet only the basic budgetary needs of the country. All the rest is hot air.

  • does someone know where i can find the soundtrack of this?

  • @Thelmperar. You may be right, but remember: all innovative projects evidence some risks...but if we want the create a sustainable world, this is feasible way because it is based on new green technologies. This will be the future.

  • Another white elephant project.

  • looks like a prison for engineers, scientists, and business types to "feel good" about their "work" and shield them from the other areas of the earth that will be devastated to carry on with old paradigm. Wake up! Green is the LAST level in the first "contractual" level of consciousness. Being "Green" is NOT "Expanded" or holistic consciousness!

  • @world fsp being "Green" is the only way the human race will survive. if we continue to kill our environments not only will the Earth's atmosphere deteriorate, exposing us to the deadly waves and vacuum space but Earth would become a dead planet like venus or mars. don't be so ignorant.

  • @xoxoYellow i can c u r the "ignorant" one. "Green" is still about money and markets. Still about nations and states. Green is a marketing term and dumb / ignorant weak minded people fall for it. Clearly... U R "green". Try Yellow or Turquoise if ya really wanna evolve. Probably don't know what I'm referring to do ya?

  • @xoxoYellow there is something BEYOND "green" ya know. BUt of course ya don't! I can see that clearly.

    Get a clue ok!

  • this is TOTAL crap for weak minded people that call yourselves "green"! It claims it will seek "Zero Waste". Yet it doesn't address the monetary / market economic system... It doesn't address the UNsustainable materialistic consumer culture which inevitable generates and environmental community destruction somewhere.
