  • chopchopchop :) love it

  • If only people knew how square this kind of drumming is. Long live Steve Gadd.

  • @PercussionPlease LOL NOTE this drumming clip is from 5 years ago and Dana has met Steve Gadd and his other heroes and they support him and his playing.

This playing isn't square one bit especially when it's placed properly. When Dana is working he plays whats needed in the music but when it's his time to shine he lets it all go. Also he works with the Grammy award winning Esperanza Spalding and Snarky Puppy he's also doing some projects on the side as well. So obviously he AIN'T no square

  • @Moog168 I'm not calling him a square, he's obviously talented. Simply, I don't like this kind of soloistic approach as much as I do Gadd's style. If those are his credentials, then he's clearly qualified. More so than myself. You'll have to excuse my choice of words in my comment though; if you go back and read it, the 'people' I refer to are those that aren't hip to styles like that of Gadd, not your friend. Again, I'm not bashing him or his playing. By the way Spalding's stuff is really cool.

  • @Moog168 You're right! Dana doing some righteous drumming in a couple combos with other groups!

  • @PercussionPlease Don't judge this old clip....Watch other RECENT clips of Dana

  • Nice clean hand speed.

  • 0:49-0:50 Damn.

  • Those single strokes between the hand and foot were CRAZY

p.s. i getting sick of seeing the old "travis barker argument" every single time i look at some drum video. Here's it is, travis is a gateway drummer. you got to start somewhere then u get into the harder stuff like thomas pridgen, tony williams, billy cobham . . . (the list and debate goes on forever)

  • that sad sound good

  • bass player was nasty

  • @DominiqueTimmons74 Tim Rawbiz my friend...

  • @DominiqueTimmons74 I KNOW!!! everybody talkin bout the drummer which is good, but THE BASS PLAYER IS FYE!!!! lol

  • nasty stinking bass man

    that was sweet

  • those blast fills were disgustingly unnecessary yet impressive.

  • @LIGHTRONIX Its the end of the show. I mean you cant see people walking around.

Damn what happened to catz just playin for fun. Cats like you make creating a very hard process. You spend so much time judging others 1:06 sec. clip and assume you seen all there is. Players players and haters hate.

  • @goku6612 I'm not sure if I should take you seriously with a username like goku6612 lol

  • THE DRUMMER RECKLESS

  • dat look like a girl dressed lik a uy bruh...whoeva he is...he good man 4real

  • hahaha i feel u...

  • Fuck!!! The bass player is fucking grooving too!

  • Dana was one of the top guys at Berklee at that time. He's playing with big names now. Other great drummers at school during those years that you can check out are: Les Cleveland, Thomas Pridgen, Louis Cato and Anthony Steel.

@caiao44 Think that's Tim "Rawbiz" Williams.

  • omg these guys are berklee students?....I think I have alot of practise to do...

  • i miss Berklee. I love how our cafeteria turned into a venue at night. Only Berklee.

  • i bet he showed up all the berklee drummers like DAYUM

  • O my gosh man i cant believe he did it how does he do that and where did you hear that from?

  • quick.

  • MY MOUTH IS LIKE 0

  • Just plain ole NASTY!!!!!!! You sick dude!!!

  • it seems as though fast chops has now been deemed "shed". these r speed warmups

  • crazy . drums andd the bass !!

  • um,ok.................i'm going to listen to justin bieber now.xD..fuck man, black people have rythm in their genes!!damn thats some, cool shit!

  • @sweeney665

We all have rhythm in our genes, just start at a young age with proper instruction, the time, effort and any race can play drums like that. It's not something that those with African genetics have built in. There are tons of drummers that have crazy chops of all races. To be honest I would love to hear something like...

"Fuck man, black people have mathematics in their genes!!damn thats some, cool shit!"

I really wish that was what African-Americans were known for.

  • @Galactu5 i wasnt implying that african americans are the only one who can play drumms,my favorite drummers are all white (portnoy, mcdonough and more) i'm just saying that many of the now considered complex rythm variations or time signatures existed in the african tradition and black people are mainly responsible for the creation of jazz and blues wich is really "hard" for any musician to play,i wasnt implying that they're genetically favored as in all other raced are uselles..that's stupid

  • @sweeney665

Thank you very much for the clarification. I agree completely with what you have added to your original comment.

The drumming from Africa is indeed rhythmically complex and interesting and every bit as important as the tradition of drumming from any other country.

Please pardon me for taking your original comment the wrong way.

I wish you nothing but the best.

  • @Galactu5

Oh my god, you just did what I least expected, you admitted a mistake. Now that's something that shows a lot for one's quality as a person (in a posiive way) and it has never happened to me before on the tube!!seriously.most of the u tubers are here to argue and insult without using common sense.

so thank u thank u thank u for doing that.i wish u the best too!

  • @sweeney665

I echo your comment about people not admitting they made a mistake on Youtube. It's like admitting you're wrong is a sin or something.

I'm here on this Earth to learn as much as I can and give as much as I can. Making sure I get the last word and similar wastes of time are not what I'm about so admitting I made a mistake or that I'm wrong isn't that hard. Though I must admit it's rare! ;) Rare that I'm wrong I mean...

  • dudes got chops thats for sure

  • That ain't no girl man!! Dana Hawkins definitley is a dude! His single stroke rolls are killin'!!

  • TRIPLETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Try keeping a beat. You're a great fill drummer, but get more solid.

  • dude hes just messing around

  • it's hilarious that anyone would tell dana hawkins to get more solid.

  • @sniggity LOL he's pretty solid here.....plus this is a super old clip.....He just played for Estelle at the winter olympics this year...Chill out.....

  • He's playing with Estelle at the Olympics tonight @ 10, check it out....

  • is that a girl drumming??/ looks lika a man with a mustache

  • Now this cat is beasting 4 real Good Stuff Sho Nuff!!!!!!

  • I enjoyed this thanks :)

  • That was sweet. Mad props to your bass player too, man.

  • ... mad drummer..! =D

  • How do you play the last lick in the video? It just blows my mind.

  • tony royster can

  • Dana,Ron Bruner and Tony Royster actually know each other :)

  • First of all, no one should try to sound like Thomas Laang if he/she wants to be a musician. Virgil Donati happens to be the only guy that does what he does and I don't see another "white guy" playing at that level either. And there are plenty of drummers of all shapes, colors and sizes that can play circles around weckl and also give Mayer a run for his money. Message me if you want specific names ;)

    Do your homework, baby!

  • what drummers do you know of

  • Yet he has met those people.....at NAMM =)

Plus having Donati/Lang chops won't really get you gigs.....

  • check my blues guitar if you like please comment if you dont like please comment or rate than i know what to keep on you your just great take care DONOTTAWAGUITAR

  • bad

  • thomlistentoslayer probably doesnt like the fact that Black drummers are good - and dont use a double bass drum pedal to make the kit sound good. could say he is a RACISTA.

  • hahahaha is some one a little mad because they dont have the timing and skill to pull off these amazing licks, and always watch people like dana hawkins(guy in the video) play with such amazing timing and chops. its ok man maybe you such try something easier..like the bass.

  • You told the truth, dude on the drums has mad skills. The a-hole is just jealous.

  • i have no idea whats going on.

  • Damn, I would love to play with that drummer!

  • noise guys

  • man those gosepel chops lol not my style at all but man you gotta gives props

  • great style and playing. fill at :32 was immense

  • 4real

  • Speak english please.

  • absolutely awesome, very articulate.. I know that sounds weird commenting that on drums, but his notes are very distinct

  • great playing but were are the doubles

and dont tell me singles are hard

    to play

    1-whole note

    2 quarters

    3-eighths

    4-trips

    5- 32 notes

  • then dont tell me doubles are hard to play, they would have ruined that piece, just like they ruin every other song by taking the simplicity and "less is more" philosophy and throwing it out the window.

  • Why isn't this guy famous? Guy's like these make me feel very bad, because if they're not famous, i will never be famous...

  • he is very famous and a good friend of mind.. Dana Hawkins and hes a jazz drummer for various artist, and he will show you anything ou want to know

  • @Drumzismylife can he show me everything he just did in this video lol but on a serious note the guy is a straight beast i cant even count how many times i watched this video

  • @Odey15 honestly he could. and on top of all of this. THIS VIDEO IS OVER LIKE 8 YEARS OLD!! So you know this nigga done got pleanty better

  • He is famous, he plays with Jeremy pelt (He's on the Shock Value album.)

  • @Trygghanse

You may not ever be famous, but you just might turn out to be a much better person and give others a greater and more meaningful life by your gifts.

You never know what the future has in store and it's all up to you.

  • @Trygghanse Ha YES I know what you mean.

  • @Trygghanse FAMOUS??? this guy right here is currently over seas on tour with Esperanza Spalding!!! Dana is the man and every one knows it!

  • @Trygghanse he is on his way he sheds with all the gospel big cats like aaron and gerald.

  • @Trygghanse

Cause he ain't That good. The drummer from my band ( 16 years old) is way better than this. And he's kinda popular in a couple of city's where i live

  • @killerstef22 i really doubt your drummer is better than this guy.I been playin drums all my life,i've seen quit a few professionals play one of my best friends ,brandon taylor, actually plays for gospel singer micah stampley and not to many of them can pull off the rolls that this guy did.you should type in brandon taylor plays drums and check out his videos

  • @witniss I've been playing music all my life , and everyone who i meet think he's a great drummer , and i do to , and he actually followed lessons , unlike most other drummers , but you think what you think , i'll think what i think , no way of proving it anyways

  • @Trygghanse There's more to being a successful musician that what you can play. It's more about how, when and why you play it, and what your personality's like.

  • @Trygghanse its all about how you promote yourself and get your name into the heads of people when they are looking for a drummer

  • @Trygghanse looks like a girl to me, but regardless... it's cause they are black.

  • @Trygghanse Some people don't seize their opportunities...knowing when to "come out" and when to "stay in" is also very important---who you meet is everything, the people who say they can "get you in" are the most important and most unreliable...Its sounds chaotic, but I believe that if you have something important to say and in a way that captivates attention---anyone can be famous--it's just a matter of only letting good people do good things for you.

  • lololol...ur right bout that. He is actually a drummer for some well known foreign band

  • @Trygghanse who cares about being famous

  • @Trygghanse not all about fame

  • @Trygghanse

Not true, Travis Barker is famous... and i'm pretty sure we're all better than him after like, 2 years of playing.

  • @beefcake8888 SHUT UP NOOB ! go kill yourself for that words

  • @202drummerboy

Oh man... I go to Interlochen... I am no n00b.

  • @beefcake8888 then why did you say : "and i'm pretty sure we're all better than him after like, 2 years of playing." - thats not actually true

  • @beefcake8888 A lot of people like Travis Barker for his style its different from what you usually would see playing wise no but you get a vibe from him when plays some drummer are really gud but are just a lump on a log

  • @Trygghanse well he is a little bit famous, he plays with some serious people

  • this has a aaron spears feel to it. nice. i like it.
