@PercussionPlease LOL NOTE this drumming clip is from 5 years ago and Dana has met Steve Gadd and his other heroes and they support him and his playing.
This playing isn't square one bit especially when it's placed properly. When Dana is working he plays whats needed in the music but when it's his time to shine he lets it all go. Also he works with the Grammy award winning Esperanza Spalding and Snarky Puppy he's also doing some projects on the side as well. So obviously he AIN'T no square
@Moog168 I'm not calling him a square, he's obviously talented. Simply, I don't like this kind of soloistic approach as much as I do Gadd's style. If those are his credentials, then he's clearly qualified. More so than myself. You'll have to excuse my choice of words in my comment though; if you go back and read it, the 'people' I refer to are those that aren't hip to styles like that of Gadd, not your friend. Again, I'm not bashing him or his playing. By the way Spalding's stuff is really cool.
What's up Berklee! Wandering Stars Management is looking for a male drummer and, a female bass player that would love to take a shot at stardom with our artist Diggz Mcleod.
Those single strokes between the hand and foot were CRAZY
p.s. i getting sick of seeing the old "travis barker argument" every single time i look at some drum video. Here's it is, travis is a gateway drummer. you got to start somewhere then u get into the harder stuff like thomas pridgen, tony williams, billy cobham . . . (the list and debate goes on forever)
@LIGHTRONIX Its the end of the show. I mean you cant see people walking around.
Damn what happened to catz just playin for fun. Cats like you make creating a very hard process. You spend so much time judging others 1:06 sec. clip and assume you seen all there is. Players players and haters hate.
Dana was one of the top guys at Berklee at that time. He's playing with big names now. Other great drummers at school during those years that you can check out are: Les Cleveland, Thomas Pridgen, Louis Cato and Anthony Steel.
We all have rhythm in our genes, just start at a young age with proper instruction, the time, effort and any race can play drums like that. It's not something that those with African genetics have built in. There are tons of drummers that have crazy chops of all races. To be honest I would love to hear something like...
"Fuck man, black people have mathematics in their genes!!damn thats some, cool shit!"
I really wish that was what African-Americans were known for.
@Galactu5 i wasnt implying that african americans are the only one who can play drumms,my favorite drummers are all white (portnoy, mcdonough and more) i'm just saying that many of the now considered complex rythm variations or time signatures existed in the african tradition and black people are mainly responsible for the creation of jazz and blues wich is really "hard" for any musician to play,i wasnt implying that they're genetically favored as in all other raced are uselles..that's stupid
Thank you very much for the clarification. I agree completely with what you have added to your original comment.
The drumming from Africa is indeed rhythmically complex and interesting and every bit as important as the tradition of drumming from any other country.
Please pardon me for taking your original comment the wrong way.
Oh my god, you just did what I least expected, you admitted a mistake. Now that's something that shows a lot for one's quality as a person (in a posiive way) and it has never happened to me before on the tube!!seriously.most of the u tubers are here to argue and insult without using common sense.
so thank u thank u thank u for doing that.i wish u the best too!
I echo your comment about people not admitting they made a mistake on Youtube. It's like admitting you're wrong is a sin or something.
I'm here on this Earth to learn as much as I can and give as much as I can. Making sure I get the last word and similar wastes of time are not what I'm about so admitting I made a mistake or that I'm wrong isn't that hard. Though I must admit it's rare! ;) Rare that I'm wrong I mean...
@sniggity LOL he's pretty solid here.....plus this is a super old clip.....He just played for Estelle at the winter olympics this year...Chill out.....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
thomlistentoslayer actually can play both single and double bass.......but yet i don't see black drummers playing ostinatoes like a virgil donati or coordination like a thomas lang or chops of a dave weckl or a great hands like a jojo mayer=^D
First of all, no one should try to sound like Thomas Laang if he/she wants to be a musician. Virgil Donati happens to be the only guy that does what he does and I don't see another "white guy" playing at that level either. And there are plenty of drummers of all shapes, colors and sizes that can play circles around weckl and also give Mayer a run for his money. Message me if you want specific names ;)
check my blues guitar if you like please comment if you dont like please comment or rate than i know what to keep on you your just great take care DONOTTAWAGUITAR
thomlistentoslayer probably doesnt like the fact that Black drummers are good - and dont use a double bass drum pedal to make the kit sound good. could say he is a RACISTA.
hahahaha is some one a little mad because they dont have the timing and skill to pull off these amazing licks, and always watch people like dana hawkins(guy in the video) play with such amazing timing and chops. its ok man maybe you such try something easier..like the bass.
then dont tell me doubles are hard to play, they would have ruined that piece, just like they ruin every other song by taking the simplicity and "less is more" philosophy and throwing it out the window.

@witniss I've been playing music all my life , and everyone who i meet think he's a great drummer , and i do to , and he actually followed lessons , unlike most other drummers , but you think what you think , i'll think what i think , no way of proving it anyways
@Trygghanse There's more to being a successful musician that what you can play. It's more about how, when and why you play it, and what your personality's like.
@Trygghanse Some people don't seize their opportunities...knowing when to "come out" and when to "stay in" is also very important---who you meet is everything, the people who say they can "get you in" are the most important and most unreliable...Its sounds chaotic, but I believe that if you have something important to say and in a way that captivates attention---anyone can be famous--it's just a matter of only letting good people do good things for you.
