  • This reminds me of the time I was at RAF Cottesmore and looking after the runway lighting.I have seen on a QRA practice 4 Vulcans take off in 4.5 mins. They had to stop the steep vertical take offs as the engines were blasting holes in the runway.A truly wonderful aircraft which I will always remember.I have made models of the 3 V-bombers i.e. Valiant,Victor and Vulcan.

  • Nice to watch back in '92 but have you seen them fly it these days? Forget the Vulcan ROOOOAAAARRRRR!!!. Its more like a big glider these days. Whats the point????

It's a shadow of its former self. Surely when they do big airshows like Waddington they might make it the star of the show like it used to be? Now its just another museum piece with big wings that only looks like XH558...And thats about all.Yes it has got show stopping potential and for me they should use it to keep XH558 popular!

  • @adrianswhitehead The reason she is flown so calm nowadays is to preserve her to keep her flying aslong as possible, her engines have very limited life aswell as her airframe life which runs out in the next couple of years. She may be quite throughout parts of her display but they do put the effort in to let us hear the roar of her engines a few times including the full power climbout with the howl. She has indeed got show stopping potetial which is used very well at all the shows she attends.

  • Always loved this aircraft.

  • onesnowball u r right the vulcan is a FANTASTIC plane. such a beautiful design. as big as it is it can actualy outmaneauver large fighters. don't believe me if u want but it can. djgambit i bet it is bu tif theres a problem only the pilot and co pilot wil survive cause they have ejection seats. noone else does. danda the mig 31 would fi tin nicely too.

  • That is what i call a bird of prey.

  • I haven't been able to see the vulcan in real life but from what I saw in this vid all I will say is amazing. That really looks like fun to watch and must be a blast to fly

  • I was at Woodford Airshow in the late 60`s/early 70`s when one did the vertical climb over the end of the runway a bit close to the crowd. All the grass shrivelled up and burnt, and all your internal organs vibrated into jam. It remains the best sound in the world. Better than Blackbirds, better than Concorde. Cant wait for the airshow season

  • Operation red flag 77... The yanks couldn't shoot these or the Buccs down, not really surprising, the Buccs were in dried up river beds, the Vulcans at 50 (yes fifty) feet from Canada to Nevada... F15 locked on, ping ping in the three pilots ears (three?) yeah, two Buccs peeled off from UNDER the Vulcans wings and carried on to the target.. Go RAF!!

  • listen to that roar! hopefully i'll be able to see this loud aircraft at a display now one's been revamped

  • Forget that Amerivan SR71 Blackbird thing. There were only ever 2 jet planes that could take the crown. The Vulcan, and the passenger jet which was based on this wonderful bomber, Concorde. When I first saw this at Woodford Air Show, I thought the Harrier doing it's hover was bloody loud, but that was nothing compared to this beast. Those Olympus engines shake the earth to it's very core!!!

  • How about the BAC English Electric Lightning?...now that was an impressive piece of engineering. Especially for its time! Just a suggestion based on your own picks. That would nicely fill the fighter/interceptor catergory!

  • Very true but you cant forget the spitfire aswell :), those 3 are the legends that will always live on!

  • Ah yes, the original superfighter of WWII! Excellent suggestion!

  • AND the Hunter!!!!! Vulcan, Lightning, Spitfire, !!!!! Oh, and the Buccaneer, and the Harrier (GR1 and GR3), and the Lancaster, and the Hurricane, and the Tempest, and the Sunderland, and the Mosquito!!!!! AND NOT ONE PIECE OF YANK OR EURO CRAP!!!!! The TSR2 should be on the list but we bought the Phantom. The rot set in there!!! Right then, 'soap box' moment over with, I can breath again. Oh, and the Gnat. And the Hunter 'again, (I just like it alot).

  • We need to have one of those to see fly here in the U.S. A joy to see fly. She's a beautiful and impressive machine!

  • It's like a certain Statofortress designer once said.

"Why is is that bomber flying upside down?"

But remember, as beautiful and manuverable she may be, it's got one fatal flaw.

It's ungodly habbit of catching on fire.

  • Amazing video and amazing plane...my favourite part is the quick climb after the low pass - you can really hear the engines working hard!

  • I remember seeing 4 of em flying in formation [diamond] over London and low level. Was an amazing sound.

The one in southend still does a highspeed taxi [when the air breaks are working haha]

  • Watched Sqn scrambles 'oop North'. Beats being plonked in front of the telly any day of the week and thrice on Sundays...!

  • ab brill!!!!!!!!

  • Absolutely awesome plane. Brilliant piece of video. She can be whisper quiet and yet howl like a wolf when necessary. Stunning....

  • I still remember the noise of that near vertical ascent after it's low level fly-past... so glad to have found it on here as it was the loudest thing I've ever heard!

  • louder than a Harrier hovering? (which is the loudest thing I ever heard)

  • she has flown again today for the first time in 14 years

  • hey people i have just seen a vulcan plane fly over my work .. near northamptonshire.. and had to check it out on you tube to see if it was the same,, abd yes it is .. i thought it was a ufo at first,, triangle massive thing.

  • Got to love the sound when it goes into a steep climb!

  • It's similar to a high speed bomber, B1B Lancer.

  • Yes! they are both four-engined bombers :-)

  • in response to bigarris, aye it's a beautiful plane :)

  • What a awesome and beautiful airplane.

    I love the Vulcan.

  • I once saw a scramble take-off by four of those simultaneously.

My feet were tickling from the ground shaking, my eyesight went blurred from my eyeballs rattling in their sockets, it felt like I was being punched in the stomach and the noise was indescribable.

    Unforgettable!

    (RAF Waddington btw)

  • Is that a beautiful plane or is that a beautiful plane?

  • Vulcan always kicks ass, can't wait for her to return to the airshow circuit.

  • I saw one at RAF Locking in the 70's - it did a quiet run - very graceful - then a loud run with climb-out - just stunning! An immortal design, give it modern engines and defences and it could "keep the peace" anywhere.

  • Thanks for bringing us that film, its so good to see it flying. I think I saw the vulcan at church fenton in 92.

Looking forward to seeing it again.

  • This is from a time when we used to be able to build things ... these days we can't build a toaster!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look forward to seeing this back in the skies very soon!!!

  • i remember the first time i saw one as a boy at an airshow i couldnt believe it got into the Air! and it went nearly vertical! magnificent piece of engineering, not as pretty as a spitfire but listen to that roar!

  • hey not in time for wodow airshow tho

nevermind the lancs just as good

  • WOW!

  • As things are going this WILL be flying this summer. Inside information ;)

  • And it will be flying once more this summer apparently !!! be great to see it in the air again !!1...concorde next ??

  • wonderful plane glad to see its return, tribute to britain.

  • comeback at Fairford!!! cannot wait!!!

  • best plane made, great clip.

  • This plane has balls, big balls, huge balls.

  • I thought Britain retired all the Vulcans? Am I wrong?

  • Yes, it is retired. But this one has been kept flying like ther Avro Lancaster

  • Incorrect, the Vulcan was retired and as the description says XH558 gave its last display in 1992, it was then bought by a private buyer and flown into Bruntingthorpe. Whilst at Bruntingthorpe it was kept active by doing taxi runs. It now in the process of being returned to flight by a private company whereas the Lancaster is operated by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight who are part of the Royal Air Force.

  • i love this plane

  • Looks so slow it will fall out the sky

  • You idiot its a slow flypast. The vulcan could outrun and outmanouvre any fighter when it was in its prime. Its the most manouverable bomber in history, its controlled by a stick like a fighter. Such a beautiful aircraft and what a noise.

  • outrun any fighter? When we had vulcans we had lightnings. You reckon a vulcan can outrun a lightning? Most manourveable bomber in history? What about the B1-B?

  • I really meant outmanouver plus it was fast. It could outmanouver practically any fighter at the time. And for the B1B that came into service in the late 80's. Again I meant at the time. Plus apart from the B1B can you name a more manouverable bomber? And I mean a built for purpose bomber.

  • FB-111A/F-111G (G is an FB-111A to Australian spec)

  • The B1-B isn't maneuverable....it's just very fast. The Vulcan could outmaneuver it any day! And true, the Lightning is so damn fast, most fighters now couldn't catch it!!!

  • At high altitude, where this bomber was really designed to operate it could apparently be a handful even to F-15 pilots.

  • outright speed no, but she was capable of Mach 1 in a shallow dive

  • A Vulcan could out-manouevere a Hunter or Lightning? as i remember the Vulcan has a +2g stress limit, correct me if im wrong but isnt a Hunter stressed to +9g? and the Lightning wasnt far off that

  • At altitude the vulcan could outmanoeuvre most things. the huge delta gave it a really low wing loading. the lightning may be able to pull 9g at low level but it wouldn't get near that in the thin air up where the vulcan was designed to operate. its tiny wings just didnt have the surface area.

  • What an amazing aircraft. I used to see these in the 70's on my way home from school....Get it flying again and please.

  • OMG!

look what you made me do!

think i need a tissue. lol :D i'm in awe.

  • RIAT and WADDINGTON this year they are the only two displays booked at the mo

  • Wow does anyone Know when it gets to the air again? the date or location?

  • She should be making an apperance at Waddington Air Show june 30th and july 1st.

  • I was at a display at Greenham common when a vulcan did a low pass along the run way stood on her tail then went near vertical climb I could feel the air vibrating inside my lungs

  • That's Vulcans for you - if the bombs don't get you they just bellow till your lungs turn to mush, your liver explodes, your eyes go pop and your head falls off. I've heard some very load noises but nothing beats a Vulcan :-)

    Moose

  • yes it is louder than the eurofighter it is quiet up to this! listen out for it this year at RIAT or Waddington I cannot wait!

  • man that is one huge plane! that is really loud!!! is it louder than eurofighter typhoon?

  • very much so! she has the same powerplants as Concorde, less afterburners of course
