@swisscowswiss Passing on the right generally applies to passing a slower moving vehicle, not a stationary one appearing to make a left turn then cutting right.By your terms though, when driving through busier streets you should never pass someone making a left hand turn in the left turn lane of a 4 lane non divided road when you in the right lanes, everyone should stop? That wouldnt creat traffic jams and hazards.dipshit.
@swisscowswiss Youre right, only 5 years in the private sector and 8 in the municipal. No idea what the driving laws pertaining to emergency vehicles, siren use, yielding, due regard, speed limits for emergency vehicles driving lights and sirens ( in my state, there technically isnt one).No wrecks on my personal or professional record either, just 2 speeding tickets over 12 years.Plus the training like AVIO and EVOC.Sirens are for emergency use, not warning other drivers.
@CyanoticFuture I still don't get you, man. Are you trying to say the ambulance driver here is not to blame at all? If you're a PRO, in this business, surely you must know and agree that his move was wrong... If you have no accidents in 13 years of service, that must mean you're a good, responsible driver, you can't say the SUV is the only one to blame, come on, be fair...
@xanado74 No i have 8 years experience ,some years ran concurrently.I dont know how at fault the ambulance driver is coz I really dont know if he was going to fast for a vehicle that size in those conditions, and i dont care because theres no assurance that even going slower would prevent anything, unless way slower. But going to slow presents its own hazards.Point is, the SUV driver pulled out directly in front of someone while attempting a blatantly illegal left turn.
@CyanoticFuture But those cameras installed on some squads are impact sensitive .They continually record and erase until activated by an impact and record everything 10-30 seconds before and after an impact. Also, they typically have the ability to record speed when impact activated.
@MrEmt19 Talking to his partner has nothing more to do with anything more then listening to the radio, which Im sure you do.In fact, because many operators have little choice but to drive tired at times,DOT actually recommends having light conversations with your partner to help stay awake or to avoid daydreaming or becoming too tensed from the demands of driving, especially driving an ambulance in emergency situations,Keep running your mouth though, its obvious you know what youresaying.
If he is undertaking he should be extra careful, not saying the SUV driver is right, but the ambulance driver is THE TRAINED PROFESSIONAL, not the douchebag in the SUV.
He makes no attempt to signal his presence, no lights, no siren. In fact, it looks like not even his headlights are on...
In my opinion he should be on the left lane, siren blaring, so the idiot realizes he's there and gets the f**k out of the way.
@xanado74 Did you consider that the ambulance was not responding to a call? Have you never seen a god damn ambulance, firetruck, or police car without its siren on? Just shut up.
But if he is NOT responding to a call, it makes it even worse, because:
1. He is undertaking
2. He is speeding on a wet road
Before you say "How do you know he's speeding?" If you ACTUALLY DRIVE, you can see he IS GOING QUITE FAST (look at broken white lines). Also you'll know speeding is not only going over the posted limit. Since he crashed, it probably means he was "driving too fast for the conditions" which is also speeding, as defined by the FHA.
@xanado74 No. There is no way to tell if he's speeding. You can't see ANYTHING. The white lines aren't even moving by quickly at all. Your last point has absolutely no merit. You're assuming that because he crashed, he was "probably speeding"? Yeah sure. Either that, OR IT COULD POSSIBLY BE THAT A DRIVER ATTEMPTED A RIGHT HAND TURN FROM THE LEFT HAND LANE. You're ridiculous.
@xanado74 No. There is no way to tell if he's speeding. You can't see ANYTHING. The white lines aren't even moving by quickly at all. Your last point has absolutely no merit. If you had read my initial comment a bit more carefully, you would have seen that I mostly blame the "douchebag in the SUV". I guess you're probably 12 or don't even drive... Anyone that does can see he's going quite fast... Regarding my last comment, in the opinion of the FHA, when you crash because you couldn't stop or avoid an obstacle, you were probably going too fast FOR THE CONDITIONS. Again, this is not MY OPINION, it's the FHA's.
@xanado74 Wait, didn't you just say to not get personal? What would you call your second sentence then? "I guess you're probably 12..."? Nice one. And no. You can not tell FROM THIS CAMERA what speed he is going. The video you're looking at is not reliable. Don't you get that?
@xanado74 the FHA do not hold that opinion when another vehicle pulls out directly in front a moving vehicle the size of an ambulance. That applies mostly to following another moving vehicle or for distant objects likely stationary in the roadway,or when going around hills and curves.even at only 30 MPH , an ambulance isnt small or nimble enough to avoid a wreck like this.Thank you, you are likely the one that doesnt drive, least not an ambulance.
@xanado74 But youre right, he may have been going to fast for the conditions, dont know, and its almost irrelevant anyhow, because even at 10MPH slower, a vehicle the size of an ambulance would still have hit it, or hit the brakes and likely, on wet roads, swerved into oncoming lanes. You know FHA ,and more relevant, DOT standards, define what a specific safe speed is in this situation...but i bet you the ambulance driver wasnt charged with a thing and the SUV driver was.
@CyanoticFuture Please note that I never said the ambulance driver was the culprit here, just that he should have been more careful, given the adverse conditions, and seeing he is supposed to be the trained professional. I am by no means an expert in assessing accidents , but I do drive, and quite a bit, for that matter...
@CyanoticFuture As for defining what speed is a safe one, that is simple to do: A safe speed is that at which one is able to control, and if necessary stop the vehicle in any circumstances, even if unexpected and in low visibility or low adherence situations. Generally, when travelling at a safe speed, drivers will be able to manage the free space ahead of them, given the influence of other vehicles, road and weather conditions. (this is what the road law says in my country).
@xanado74 A safe speed is that at which one is able to control, and if necessary stop . the vehicle in any circumstances, even if unexpected and in low visibility orlow adherence situations. No such speed exists unless zero -2 MPH counts.
@xanado74 But also, since youre an expert, and you "can clearly see he was going too fast"..s..well..again ambulances are big vehicles, much much bigger than even most SUVS...and as much damage as was done to the SUV,an ambulance going over 3 0 likely would have had airbag deployment IN the squad and at that angle, flipped the SUV ,or far more damage seen to it.Violent crash yes, but not so much so the camera skipped upon impact (tell tale sign of excess speed caused wrecks)
Yet more proof that before people are allowed to drive SUVs they should be required to take a special license, proving that the are actually competent enough to drive such a large, heavy, poor-handling, and gas-guzzling vehicle.
Someone commented: "The ambulance driver was going to fast for road conditions.....this could have been avoided"
In response I can say there is simply NO way to determine that from this particular VIDEO. Anyone with investigation experience immediately knows this particular type of camera makes it nearly impossible to determine the actual speed the vehicle in question was traveling.
Wide-angle lenses create a skewed perception of what you see and cannot be used to determine rate-of-speed.
@tourch403 What if they were responding to an emergency huh, and that person could have died if they didn't get there on time. And the dumbass driver was the fault of the accident not the ambulance. So yeah it could hav beenavoided if we didn't have dumbasses given drivers licenses so they can cause an accident like this !
Look at me!! I'm an SUV driver, and I like to stop in the left lane with my left turn signal on then make a right turn across the path of an emergency vehicle in the rain. DAAAAAHH!!! Have you seen my baseball?
teh driver had their left turn singnal on and the rescue unit did not have lights or sirens on therforthe driver of the suv is at fault for making an illegal tur in the improper lane

@richardsbrandon5027 says: "The SUV driver was trying to follow the normal custom of getting to the right side when you see a cop car or ambulance, ... The driver just couldn't tell/didn't see that the ambulance was already intending to pass on the right. ..."
Wrong. No need to move right if no emergency indicated by red lights.
SUV driver failed to signal, started illegal righturn from LEFT lane, failed to check for other vehicles in lane #2. WE ALL PAY with our high insurance rates.
SUV had left blinker on and then veered into the right lane with no warning or indication.
They were not on a call, they were driving like any other person. Totally legal.
The SUV driver failed to indicate or look before changing lanes.
Ambulance could not avoid this - even a full turn to the right would slam them into a guardrail, possibly falling off the embankment and further serious injury to the medics.
@DeltaFoxtrotWhiskey3 to tell you the truth...its almost a guessing game...sometimes driving overly cautions by driveways assuming a car will pull out...of coarse that cant always be done......so i just pray
Hmmm... luckily this is an ambulance or big vehicle. The dumbass in the SUV had a left turn light on in the left hand passing lane. Suddenly, without any signal (wouldn't of mattered anyway - he/she had already committed on going over the dotted line to the right) it veers to the right and the ambulance had no choice but to slam into the SUV. WOW.....License should be taken away immediately, don't want stupid drivers to be killing innocent safe drivers, or worse pedestrians.
@rykember11 Why would it be used? There was barely anyone on the road so they didn't have to use it or maybe they weren't in a call. The SUV driver was a pure moron and more than likely a woman.
@dumskull99 well it all goes back to how an emergency vehicle respondes...the ambulance driver should have probably been using his siren...just because no one else is on the road doesn't mean you don't have to use your siren, since the ambulance was coming up on a side road, he should have had his siren on! If it had been used, the driver of the SUV might have heard it and got into the right lane...but on the other hand, they could have been preoccupied and just got right in the way like most!
@firestream93 upon looking at the video more...I don't think the ambulance is actually responding, Usually on a wet highway, you would be able to see a reflection of the emergency lights!
I can't see a damn thing for all the raindrops on the lens...bah, here's hoping the dumbass in the SUV is so badly hurt that they'll never walk again, much less drive. They're too stupid to handle movement on their own.
typical SUV driver, that is why they feel they need a large SUV to protect them because they know they can't drive worth a shit! Both Ford and GM did studies to that fact - the typical SUV owner is not confident in their ability to drive and or has self-esteem issues
it looked to be that he had his left trun signal on not his right. and the suv should have not even turned in that lane. usually they would have there sirens on but look around there is not alot of cars. SUV is the falt
WOW... The ambulance wasn't even passing the SUV. They were just cruising along and the SUV stopped in the road, then made a lazy turn. What a j@ck@ss. At least the SUV got pwned, ambulances are built like tanks.
By far, one of the stupidest drivers I've seen on youtube! (the SUV driver, that is, although the ambulance shouldn't have been overtaking on the right side).
What do you mean "overtaking on the right side?" The ambulance driver wasn't doing anything wrong.
The driver of the SUV stopped and attempted a right hand turn in the left lane, putting him/herself in front of the path of an ambulance that couldn't stop in time.
The SUV never even signaled intent, much less prepared for the turn by changing lanes to the right well before turning into whatever road or place he/she intended to go.
Yes, as I said - the SUV driver is a complete idiot, but the way I was taught, it is never a great idea to pass someone on the right side in a situation like that.
Something to do with the fact that the driver is sitting on the left seat, and is more likely to spot you if you're passing him on the left.
Either way, it always takes more than one unfortunate circumstance or a stupid mistake caused by bad judgment, to make a crash.
That's not even the worst part. If you look closely, you can see the driver of the SUV has his/her LEFT signal on! This is proof that half of the people driving on the road, should not be driving on the road.
@Watcher3223 If you pause at 0:09 the SUV was WAY the hell too far forward to even make the turn. Too bad the ambulance got destroyed, pretty high price to pay to get an asshole like that off the road.
However, I believe it's kind of obvious that the video was taken in North America, either in the United States or Canada, by the accents of the people and the vehicles. In both countries, people drive on the right side.
Then again, it's certainly possible for someone to be a bit more careless about facts and less observant on details, leading to the assumption of this happening in Britain or any other English-speaking nation where vehicles are driven on the left side.
@guidofernandez Absolutely nothing wrong with passing the lefturning vehicle on the right. What was following driver (ambulance) to do? Stop behind the SUV and wait for it to turn left?
Yes, try to pass on left, but if slow driver is in left lane, you won't pass?

I can't see a damn thing for all the raindrops on the lens...bah, here's hoping the dumbass in the SUV is so badly hurt that they'll never walk again, much less drive. They're too stupid to handle movement on their own.

The moron in the SUV tried to make a right turn from the LEFT lane....WTF?
The moron in the SUV hopefully had the LEFT side of their brain smashed in from the Impact.......LOL

typical SUV driver, that is why they feel they need a large SUV to protect them because they know they can't drive worth a shit! Both Ford and GM did studies to that fact - the typical SUV owner is not confident in their ability to drive and or has self-esteem issues

Common driving mistake: Turning from the inner lane.
MacraStraba 1 year ago
it looked to be that he had his left trun signal on not his right. and the suv should have not even turned in that lane. usually they would have there sirens on but look around there is not alot of cars. SUV is the falt

Didn't anyone teach them how to use their sirens?
m173627 2 years ago
They weren't going to an emergency. And it's illegal to use sirens when there is no emergency.
BrothersGroove 2 years ago 3
@BrothersGroove um, they werent using a siren.
AshleyOohDang 1 year ago
@AshleyOohDang most likely not on a call.
WoWSmirv 1 year ago
@AshleyOohDang Exactly my point. Some people seem to think they should have been using a siren, thereby blaming the accident on the ambulance driver.
BrothersGroove 1 year ago
@AshleyOohDang prob only had lights on no need for siren unless there is heavy traffic

mike3180350 2 years ago
Well, 2 lanes, SUV in the left lane with the left blinker out...and then turns right cutting 2 lanes. No doubt it's his fault.
teddyboy73 2 years ago 2
The SUV He/she made an unsafe lane change.
jrodigan5 2 years ago
the suv was it was in the middle lane and just turned in front of the ambulance
PaulieMac77 2 years ago
You cant tell? The SUV made a right turn from the left lane with the left blinker on. Does not take a detective.

(the SUV driver, that is, although the ambulance shouldn't have been overtaking on the right side).
guidofernandez 3 years ago
What do you mean "overtaking on the right side?" The ambulance driver wasn't doing anything wrong.
The driver of the SUV stopped and attempted a right hand turn in the left lane, putting him/herself in front of the path of an ambulance that couldn't stop in time.
The SUV never even signaled intent, much less prepared for the turn by changing lanes to the right well before turning into whatever road or place he/she intended to go.
Watcher3223 3 years ago 69
Yes, as I said - the SUV driver is a complete idiot, but the way I was taught, it is never a great idea to pass someone on the right side in a situation like that.
Something to do with the fact that the driver is sitting on the left seat, and is more likely to spot you if you're passing him on the left.
Either way, it always takes more than one unfortunate circumstance or a stupid mistake caused by bad judgment, to make a crash.
guidofernandez 3 years ago
Of course it's improper to pass on the left, but the ambulance driver wasn't attempting any kind of pass to begin with.
He can't control the SUV ahead of him and the SUV slowed to a stop and attempted a right hand turn from the left lane.
Watcher3223 3 years ago 5
@Watcher3223
That's not even the worst part. If you look closely, you can see the driver of the SUV has his/her LEFT signal on! This is proof that half of the people driving on the road, should not be driving on the road.
LostInPhilly89 1 year ago 2
@LostInPhilly89
"This is proof that half of the people driving on the road, should not be driving on the road."
Or, at the very least, that driving in the rain turns some drivers into idiots.
Watcher3223 1 year ago
@Watcher3223 Actually it looks like they had the LEFT turn signal on, before turning right... weird...
53ph3ra 11 months ago
@Watcher3223 If you pause at 0:09 the SUV was WAY the hell too far forward to even make the turn. Too bad the ambulance got destroyed, pretty high price to pay to get an asshole like that off the road.
DeltaFoxtrotWhiskey3 10 months ago
@DeltaFoxtrotWhiskey3
Well, fortunately, it's the SUV driver that pays for it (or, rather, his/her insurance).
Watcher3223 10 months ago
@Watcher3223 You can bet his premiums and deductibles just went thru the roof though.
DeltaFoxtrotWhiskey3 10 months ago
@DeltaFoxtrotWhiskey3
Well, that can be a way he/she pays for it if insurance is involved. Then there's the ticket.
Watcher3223 10 months ago
@Watcher3223 n if you whatch closley she still had his/her left turn signal on. what a dumb ass. hahahaha
1sh4rky4 8 months ago 2
@Watcher3223 i think people are think the ambulance was overtaking the SUV cause if you drive on the left
you overtake on the right
Milsy15 8 months ago
@Milsy15
Of course.
Watcher3223 8 months ago
@guidofernandez
The US have other street-rules. There you can overtake on the right sight, but i really doesn't know one more country where it is like there.
Supertenere 1 year ago
@guidofernandez Absolutely nothing wrong with passing the lefturning vehicle on the right. What was following driver (ambulance) to do? Stop behind the SUV and wait for it to turn left?
Yes, try to pass on left, but if slow driver is in left lane, you won't pass?
Appears you did not pass second grade.
