  • the female comic is both unfunny and unintelligent, at least one of earth's population of 7 billion people that is expendable

  • I'm Finnish and I don't know a lot about English accents, but Ross Noble has the most delightful accent ever!

  • @pedarikarhu it's a typical geordie accent

  • hippos are actually really cute! even the name 'Hippo' is just adorable

  • Isn't it weird that something that's kinda cute is so very dangerous?

  • I don't like Ruby Wax.

  • I love how QI videos contain actually thought out arguments (instead of 'gay' 'no ur gay' 'FAGLORD FUCK OFF' *reference to hitler/WWII/war on terror* etc.) with an actual structure and coherent form.

  • @GeorgeChopin1849 shut up you faglord, Hitlernaziscum !!!! xD. I think i made society a little bit worse :p. I hate those kind of people also.

  • goafrica.about.com lists the Hippopotamus as Africa's most dangerous animal. As #3 they list "humans". Go figure...

  • Who else googled "hippo teeth"

  • Shaun was right by the way, Hippos have between 36 and 40 teeth.

  • Why are people on this comment thread SO aggressive towards Ruby Wax when a)she didn't take up the majority of time talking and b)other people also said unfunny things?

  • @Bumblybee256 Because she's stupid and trying to make out as if she knows the answers to all of the questions.

  • @amida41 ......ALL of them do that.

  • @Bumblybee256 The rest of them are smarter, and they don't act as if they know the answers. They either make a joke or suggest a possible answer. They don't say "fill their longs with water (while at the bottom of the pool) and then float to the top herp derp" Leave the feminist 'women can't be treated like idiots when they act like it' bullshit alone.

  • @amida41 "dumb cunt" is a bit harsh and there seems so be plenty of misogyny going on here...

  • @infraball It is, and I suspect there probably is. I don't condone calling her that, or necessarily agree with the level of aggression towards her. But I do acknowledge she acted and sounded stupid during the clip.

  • @amida41 You clearly haven't seen much more of QI then. I've seen your type, any woman on panel shows like these can expect the same treatment regardless of who they are. Oh yes, and that's not what 'feminist' means, you cretin.

  • @Bumblybee256 what bothers me is when women do the exact same thing they're complaining about under the belief it will help their cause... it doesn't.

  • @Bumblybee256 And I've seen yours, and I cannot begin to enunciate just how sick I am of it. Are some of the people on this comments page acting misogynistic ? Probably, I haven't read through them all but it sounds like a safe bet. Does their attitude towards women colour their treatment of Wax? Almost certainly, and to an unreasonable extent. But the fact that those people are arseholes doesn't change the fact that she STILL sounded like an idiot. Deal with it.

  • @amida41 And what's your explanation regarding the fact that unfunny men have also appeared on this show- without a following comment thread of derogatory comments directed at them?

  • @Bumblybee256 Ignoring for a moment that humour is subjective and is determined on a personal basis or by majority opinions (your definitive 'unfunny men have appeared on the show' needs to have people agreeing with you before it has any basis) I don't have one and I don't owe you one. If you'll very carefully read my comments, you MIGHT notice that I answered that Wax sounded like an idiot. I didn't say that none of the commenter's were acting misogynistic. I even said otherwise to infraball.

  • @amida41 If it's so subjective why would other people agreeing with me give that any weight? You agreed that there appeared to be misogyny going on here, which is what I was saying. Your problem appears to be that I addressed it.

  • @Bumblybee256 No, my problem is that you think misogyny is necessary to explain why anyone would treat Wax like an idiot. She acted like a fool in this clip, ergo people are justified in forming a negative opinion of her. A number of people may be taking that TOO far, but there's no injustice in calling her an idiot.

  • @amida41 That doesn't explain the derogatory comments on other videos which are directed solely at the female participants in QI. 'Idiot' is fine, but much of it references the fact that they are women.

  • @Bumblybee256 The hell do you want from me? I never brought up other videos and the only statement I've made is that I thought Ruby Wax sounded like an idiot in this clip. Go argue on those other pages if there are people on them that bother you.

  • @amida41 You shouldn't reply to other people's comments if you can't even comprehend what they actually said.

  • @Bumblybee256 When did I not understand anything you said? I gave an answer you misunderstood and threw a hissy fit over, and now you keep on bringing up vague crap from other pages that have nothing to do with anything I said. Either stop with the misdirection and projection or go over to those pages and confront the people you're actually angry with.

  • @Bumblybee256 Look at any clips with Rory Mcgrath. Everyone there is calling him a fag because he was such a bore. Its not sexist, People just immediatly come up with the worst thing they can thing to call someone. Its awful but oh well.

  • @ohcrapmynameistoolon Insults based on sex/gender ARE sexist.

  • @Bumblybee256

It's not his fault so many of the female guests have been uncharismatic, witless bores. Unless you'd suggest their higher order thinking is carried out by their vaginas; why raise this objection?

I see one person who has judged a series of individuals on the content of their character and another who has latched onto the fact that they all so happen to have vaginas. You are the sexist in this scenario.

  • @HandsomeNamed Because regardless of how many male witless bores appear on TV they never get such abuse and if they do it is never about their gender. That was the point- if you can't be bothered reading an entire comment thread I suggest you don't embarrass yourself by jumping in. I haven't made any sexist remarks.

  • @Bumblybee256

This is perhaps a case of confirmation bias; i'm quite accustomed to reading comments ridiculing particular males, and it's far from strange for his sex to be brought into the insult pointlessly.

I'm hardly embarrassed by your refusal to see why your attitude might be seen as sexist.

We're not talking about nouns, btw. You meant to say sex, as humans are of course biological entities. Though some insist the term gender applies albeit with a meaning distinct from sex

  • @HandsomeNamed In what way can my attitude be seen as sexist? My whole point is that it is women who are on the receiving end of insults which are gender specific. When a woman on TV is called a 'boring bitch' or 'old hag', that's not just about the fact she might be boring but her gender too.

  • @Bumblybee256

I'm repeating myself now, which is never pleasant and especially pointless when the medium is written

The term you are searching for is sex. Gender applies only to nouns, unless you're a cultural marxist; then you'll insist it's some nonsense about social identity. Either way the terms are not synonymous

I made my point clear about your sexism in my first post. The character of several individuals was insulted. You miss the point, seeing only they are of the same sex

  • @HandsomeNamed *sigh* You know exactly what I mean- repeating yourself over irelevant points simply looks as though you're being avoidant. I just asked you what I said that was sexist- insulting someone based on character is NOT insulting them based on their sex. That's the ENTIRE point.

  • @Bumblybee256

I understand that you see the use of bitch or hag being a form of sexism. This is a often a really shallow appreciation of the reasons. I often make insults more personal by saying "You stupid woman/man" because insults bear more impact when personalised. "Stupid person" is rather mild in comparison.

The point is to be insulting to the INDIVIDUAL, rather than demean the whole of the sex. It happens to both sexes. Find something more meaningful to be sour about.

  • @HandsomeNamed Lmao, don't project onto me dear. I'm merely pointing something out. Characterising me as sour reflects a great deal more on you. Why don't you enlighten me then on the reasons for highlighting someone's sex by using sex specific insults when it is completely irrelevant?

  • @Bumblybee256

"Dear" is patronising, at attack, which shows you are on the defensive, despite being engaged in an anonymous exchange with a stranger. Considering we're on the internet, I thought the use of "sour" as a description of your attitude was very mild; an almost polite,

I explained why sex is often brought into the insult; especially when no further information is known about the target one wishes to defame. Insults are ineffectual if they are not personalised.

  • @HandsomeNamed Lol, I know it is. It was in response to your insult, which was indeed an insult no matter how you now try to dress it up.

Right- and my point is that they are used more often when insulting women than men.

  • @Bumblybee256

I don't retract my mild insult? I still very much believe you're being sour about something trivial. Sexism is a serious claim and it's diminished by being thrown around in situations like these.

Sexism is discrimination. If a woman is targeted for an insult because of the content of her character, then the inclusion of her sex, that insult is not an act of discrimination. Discrimination is necessarily in the choosing of victims. That's what it literally means.

  • @HandsomeNamed I see, so if someone points out something and you disagree with them that automatically means they must be sour. Interesting. Nope, holding women to higher standards and then making sex specific insults when they fall short is very much sexism. The inclusion of her sex is an act of discrimination as it has nothing to do with her character.

  • @Bumblybee256

No? You'd be sour, conceivably, with or without me around disagreeing with your sourness.

You endow me with far too much power, stranger. I am no god.

You don't seem to understand the base meaning of discrimination, then. I don't say that to be patronising, either; it really seems like you don't understand the meaning of the verb. Discrimination must necessarily occur in the choosing of a victim; not how you then attack that victim ie choice of words for the insult.

  • @HandsomeNamed Characterising me as sour isn't helping you. And er......I have no idea what power you're talking about but the ridiculous way you're talking is quite amusing. You don't seem to understand that sexism can be an attitude and that focusing an insult on someone's sex is a statement about that sex. I just asked you how you know the person's sex wasn't the reason they were picked out to be insulted if someone uses a sex-specific insult.....?

  • @Bumblybee256

The verb being "to discriminate", obviously. I'm aware "discrimination" is an absract noun.

  • @Bumblybee256

    *in that insult

    Broken sentences; time for sleep.

  • @Bumblybee256

If a woman is called a 'Boring hag", because she's been perceived as being boring, then it's the quality of being boring that has been discriminated about her character.

It might be uncouth, but the point is usually, as i've said, to personalise the insult and give it more bite. Discrimination has only occurred if you believe she has been targeted for that insult BECAUSE of her sex. It's not enough that it's just been mentioned after the fact.

  • @HandsomeNamed 'GIving it more bite' and being sexist are not mutually exclusive. I have seen insults directed at men on here but really do they have male specific insults. When there is a sex specific insult included how do you know it's not because of her sex?

  • @Bumblybee256

In this instance, they are mutually exclusive. The motivation of "giving an insult more bite" is not an act of discrimination. It's an act of being an arsehole and wanting to hurt someone.

As i've been trying to explain, "Sexism" does not entail "being mean to women"

Unless one has chosen to be mean to them BECAUSE they are woman. If I insult a woman for being boring, and call her a boring woman, i've discriminated her being a boring individual, not her being a woman

  • @HandsomeNamed So can you then explain why more insults directed at men aren't 'given more bite'? That really is a shockingly bad excuse. I never suggested that sexism means being mean to women. You leave much room for doubt- you have referenced the fact she is a woman, how is she to know the real reason for your insult?

  • @Bumblybee256

The real reason for the insult is pretty obvious in these cases. "She's such a boring bitch" is obviously to do with an aspect of her character, which would imaginably be the same if she were a man or a Wookie. The addition of "bitch" is to make it more personal and thus insulting, because that's usually the intention of an insult; be insulting.

Discrimination (sexism) does and can only occur in the selection, not the execution, of an insult or whatever other action

  • @HandsomeNamed and do you then refer to boring men witha sex specific insult?

It is not wrong to call it sexism when sex specific insults are used for one sex but not the other.

Why does the personalisation refer to sex- that's not particularly unique/personal.

  • @Bumblybee256

"and do you then refer to boring men with a sex specific insult"

Not always, not even usually. But then as i've tried to make clear, sex has naught to do with the addition. The addition is supposed to be anything personal; anything to make an otherwise dull insult more effective and hurtful. No matter what hurtful addition you make, it can't alter the reason which already governed your choosing that person to insult. That's where the discrimination was and always is.

  • @HandsomeNamed Well, that's very nice for you to know- as I've previously pointed out it's not obvious to anyone else. If someone called me a boring bitch I would take note of the fact they were insulting me with a sex-specific insult and therefore commenting on my sex. I know many people who use sex specific insults with women and not men.

  • @Bumblybee256

And I know a many women who have made it obvious that they respect less the opinions of men, and are quick to desparage us at any given chance. There are many kinds of stupid in the world.

My only point is that the mentioning of a person's sex in an insult is not itself the act of sexual discrimination, nor necessarily indicative of an act of discrimination even having occurred. Her sex might be the reason for the insult being given. But often it seems that it's not.

  • @HandsomeNamed As I have now said countless times it IS sexism if you reference the sex of one sex but not the other in insults. Sexism is not necessarily an act, as I have also previously said.

I would argue that often it seems that is is. I think you'd find that if Ruby wax's or Brand's words were instead spoken by a man, there would not be a stream of male specific insults from the same posters.

  • @Bumblybee256

*in the selection (of a victim), not the execution (of the insult toward that victim)

Pardon my failed English; Youtube comment boxes are limiting and the sun will be rising soon.

  • @Bumblybee256

The key here is what is discrimination. It doesn't mean "being mean". It's to do with the criteria of selection. In all the cases you've complained about, the criteria for selecting those women were to do with the content of their characters. Boring/stupid/whatever. Attached to that insult was the addition of some sex-specific insult. Unless you suggest they were CHOSEN to be insulted because of being women, then no sexism has occurred. I hope my explanation is clear

  • @HandsomeNamed *rarely

  • @Bumblybee256

It's not completely irrelevant. Its relevance, though, is more often the purpose of insulting the individual rather than undermining the whole of the sex. It happens to men and women. If you tell me you've never heard, and often, "boy" or "man" suffixed to an insult, then you're a fool or a liar or a combination of the two.

Sexism is an act of discrimination, not an act of commenting on what so happens to be a true fact; that she is a woman or he is a man.

  • @HandsomeNamed Attributing an undesirable characteristic to someone's sex is sexist. I commented about this on youtube, not because I have never seen a male-specific insults- but because they are female specific FAR more often and the comments on QI demonstrate that. You don't need to specify gender to make it personal- people's names are used.

  • get rid of that bitch, and the guy that looks like adams family, just not funny.

  • female comedian tells joke, fails, gives up and answers question

  • What happens if you throw Ruby Wax into the deep end of a swimming pool? Is she still so annoying?

  • Ugh I forgot that woman existed, she always ruined UK panel shows, it's been years since I've seen her, I'm guessing the U.S. took her back?

  • I went to hippoteeth(dot)com and is was just a page full of ads to enhance sperm :(

  • The guy in black annoys me no end. Always interrupting something interesting others are saying with his inane shit.

  • @tintiringa However, ROSS NOBLE is one of the funniest men alive, so I'm going to forgive him on a comedy programme...

  • @SMuJ17

Ross Noble... Just see the Ewoks on Titan clip.

  • @IWannaBeTheUser I Have seen it, but I'm unsure as to why I'm being told this... please explain...

  • @SMuJ17

That clip is one of THE BEST Ross Noble clips.

  • @IWannaBeTheUser I know, I'm not the one slagging off Ross Noble, try the other guy. I've seen a lot of RN videos on ze YouTube.

  • @tintiringa Pretty sure that's a woman in the black saying ignorant crap the entire time.

  • 'Fill their lungs and float to the top, I'm just using logic'

... fill their longs with what exactly if they're at the bottom of the water??

  • Wait, how do the float up from the bottom?

  • Wait, Eastenders isn't true? Gasp

  • goth guy with long hair, is so not funny and is ruining the jokes,

  • Hippoteeth . com is real...

  • it gets wet

  • He says Four-T; you know, forty with an accent and mild pause, not 4.

  • Yeah hippo's have 40 teeth. 36 + 4

  • A hippo has 40 teeth. When you see a hippopotamus opening its mouth, it seems as though they have only four! But they actually have 40 teeth. The incisors that you noticed, and the canines, get to be 18 inches long. Those are used primarily for defending their young and establishing a territory. The reason we can see them so well is that a hippo can open his mouth 180 degrees, in comparison to a human that can only open 45 degrees.

  • they float

  • hippos doesn't just have 4 teeth. I just watched animal planet and there was a hippo-skull there and it had lots of teeth, not just the tusks :S

  • Where's the one where he talks about Jordan's animal facts?

  • I went to HippoTeeth . com xD

  • alan + personality = adoreable

  • @MyNameIsBucket Haha, wow, I didn't even think of that when I heard her say it. ;D

  • @MyNameIsBucket A shame no one pointed this out to her to a manner akin to, "And how pray tell would a hippo go about filling his lungs with AIR whilst under the water?"

Then we could have had Rowan Atkinson scamper onto the stage while she was stumped for an answer an provide the necessary, "MAGIC! *snort snort*"

    Brilliant!

    =3

  • Natives on the river by Victoria Falls apparently love it when a hippo loses its footing and goes over the falls as they are very territorial and they often snap canoers boats in half and then the people get eaten by the crocodiles. So they are happy when the hippos go over the falls, lands at the bottom and explodes.

  • @23Prospero37

I would pay good money to see that.

  • @23Prospero37 Wonderful cheery story to tell the kiddies:)))

  • @23Prospero37 I just read this in Stephen's voice. ;)

  • @23Prospero37 Natives on the river by Victoria Falls are very territorial and often snap canoers' boats in half? What's wrong with them?

  • @23Prospero37 What manner of absolute moron goes canoeing in a river that has man-eating crocodiles? That's just asking for trouble!

  • @23Prospero37 I would like very much to see this exploding hippo.

  • @23Prospero37 Hell, who wouldn't love an exploding hippo?

  • that bitch is a dumbass. "Are you speaking english"? what an ignorant bitch.

  • who's that woman..?

  • @VioIentGoIdFish ruby wax
