Question: I'm a Brit and have never really watched NHL. Are fights kind of allowed in NHL?? I mean if that was football ( soccer ) the player would get suspended for 4 or five games but over there the ref just seems to let them beat the shit out of each other. What's it all about?

Most teams have, at the very least, middleweights that can handle the fight if the need arises. Most players aren't fighters, and the ones that can fight are usually in the bottom 6 out of 12 forwards, or the bottom 2 of six defense-men. Sometimes a team has a heavyweight that doesn't even dress unless the coach feels like he will be needed.

Most fighters have at least a little bit of skill (alot of them used to be skilled players before becoming pure fighters) but Derek Boogard is an absolutley terrible hockey player. I played against him in a rec league during the lockout a few years ago. He cant even skate.

Well, as a hockey player, you should then realize that there is more to being a good enforcer (which Boogaard is) than just fighting. He forechecks like a madman which creates opportunities for his linemates, and he makes some amazing checks. True, he is not Alex Ovechkin, but that does not mean he is useless.
Anybody who says he (or any enforcer) is just there to fight needs to watch more hockey.

I'm from Minnesota and a Wild fan. I've worn my Boogaard shirt all day. I cried when I found out. I'm just sick. Not only was he a force to be reckoned with, he was a good GOOD hearted person. On the ice, he was fierce. Off the ice, a heart of gold and such a kind man. Just three years older than me. I can't believe he is gone. I had the blessing of meeting him in 2009 and such a gentle, sweet teddy bear. Derek, I will miss you. RIP Boogie, and thank you for such amazing memories. :'(

@tmjm323 also the fact that you also have to be halfway decent in the nhl otherwise its like having 1 less man on the ice. also fighting on skates and being able to keep your balance would be a totally different arena for any fixed ground type fighter. look up mike valley tries fighting kip brennan. mike valleys a tough son of a bitch, gets his ass fed to him by kip brennan, whos only a decent former enforcer.

Most fighters have at least a little bit of skill (alot of them used to be skilled players before becoming pure fighters) but Derek Boogard is an absolutley terrible hockey player. I played against him in a rec league during the lockout a few years ago. He cant even skate.

My point was that Derek Boogard lacks pretty much every skill there is to play hockey. Unlike most fighters who have at least a little skill, he is purely there for his ability to fight.

Well, as a hockey player, you should then realize that there is more to being a good enforcer (which Boogaard is) than just fighting. He forechecks like a madman which creates opportunities for his linemates, and he makes some amazing checks. True, he is not Alex Ovechkin, but that does not mean he is useless.
Anybody who says he (or any enforcer) is just there to fight needs to watch more hockey.
