Nothing against the individual, or you're likely to get your teeth kicked in. BUT the congressmen the bankers the dictators the elite the BASTARDS in control who recrute and send them off to war to win some silly nonsense trophy for their shelf, or oil.
Thanks for your reply. Yes...beautiful song. Recently read something that Donovan (who covered this song in the 1960's) said that he listened and learned many of Buffy's songs and really loved "Universal Soldier" and of course then recorded it which became a hit for him. He was so compimentary when he spoke of Buffy and her talent.
Benjamin Franklin, One of our Great Founding Father's said, "There was never a Good War, or a Bad Peace" With the Declaration of Independence there was envisioned a Better more Beautiful way to bring Happiness To All Humanity. We are now living in Science Fiction. Old methods of warfare are Bankrupt!. It's Time to use our Intelligence to see the difference between what is Beautiful and what is really truly Ugly and Choose!
So many great cnandian artists with a strong consience, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and the list goes on and on. Buffy is one of them and not the least at all.
I like the singing, but this song was very offensive to the soldiers who currently serve, those who are planing on serving (Like me), and those who have given their lives. As a person who is enlisting in the Army next spring I don't like the message of this song. Soldiers are not to blame for wars.
@slim092000 Buffy Sainte-Marie has made one thing clear about this song for over 40 years: soldiers are not to blame. So it seems you have arrived at an understanding which is the exact opposite of what she is saying - and singing. It is WE, the people who choose politicians who send soldiers to war - we are the ones who are to blame. That's what the whole song is about. Exactly as you say, and exactly as Buffy Sainte-Marie has always said: "Soldiers are not to blame for wars."
@slim092000 jabaa is right. You don't understand the song. The song is critical of the politicians who are sending you to war so their friends can see higher war profits, and to the citizenry for letting them do it.
@slim092000 War isn't good or bad. War is not right or wrong. War is just what we do. Also they aren't drafting people anymore so you don't have to go kill people unless you want to.
In closing this post Mr. Death isn't making any real headway. He's fighting a losing battle in spite of all the wars we wage.
@shawndaven Yea, but here's the way war works. The winners are the good guys and the losers are evil and get tried for war crimes, whatever the hell they are.
In the end here's about what it all amounts to. Mankind has been killing each other long before I came here and they will be killing each other long after I'm gone.
Now that everyone has the atomic bomb there is no hope for man. Soon we will become extinct.
I remember the first time I was exposed to this song. I had a teacher in high school who wanted us all to know about a Canadian icon who never got enough respect.
I like Buffy's singing but not the message. There are good wars and bad. I'm not crazy about our current war and feel we should leave ... Try saying that about WW2! We had no choice, unless you like the idea of goosestep marching outside your window! I fought in the Korean war and consider it the first bad one. There have been others ...
Thank you for your service--misdirected as it may have been. You stood for USAmerica. Choice back then was not a choice. Muhammed Ali [then say, 1954; the young Cassius Clay], moved the USA that much more forward to its ideals. I thank you and I thank him.
@mickyblue247 There are three good wars. They are the ones you win and the ones you come back alive and in one peace from and the ones you are smart enough not to participate in.
The ones you lose, the one you come back from in a body bag or with peices missing and the ones you are not smart enough not to participate in are the bad ones.
In closing this post we've been killing each other for thousands of years. Why should anything change?
This lady is an amazing vocalist. She has so much to say. I grew up listening to her. Beautiful woman, strong character. I would love to see her in concert. Even at 70 she's looking and sounding great.
Splitting hairs between "Capitalism" and "Corporatism" brings nothing to the debate. The fact that the US ended up in Iraq, and dragged a string of dependent economies along, shows that Imperialism is not dead--the age of conquest continues. And there is no end in sight.
Thank God that there are troubadors to sing us the truth.
@walstib77 As long as spheres of influence exist, and mankind subscribes to the ideals of borders and such politics, there will be conflict. Do I wish to see something more? Of course. Will we see something more in the near future? I have my doubts. However, that being said, I encourage the advocates of peace to continue their campaign as every step forward, however small or slight in immediate appearance, is yet a step forward. With persistence the goal will be attained.
hmm i agree war cant will not put an end to war but isnt war "natural" that is to say its always existed not just in this "modern age" but a sense of tribalism has always been there. hmm but what if the soldiers on either side decided not to fight at all what would happen then..
@PimpMyParadigm Many things are "natural" to the beast in us, but the human in us can triumph over so much of it. We do it all the time, and some things are an endless challenge within society, but we should still challenge them.
@Twisterjoe great point ppl say natural as if they are things we cannot affect and have agency over...war kinda doesnt make sense logically but emotionally/primitively it does lol idk but yea we as humans arent victims to whats natural" we make up social constructs all the time! lol good song good discussion
This is one powerful woman and she crafted one helluva powerful song. Moving inspiring and straight to the heart of the truth of war. She is appearing June 11 2010 in Tonasket Washington it's sure to be amazing.
As brilliant & timeless as Blowin" in the wind... Buffy really is Bob Dylan 's equal as a songwriter and Joan Baez' equal as a humanitarian... she has no equal when it comes to her amazing vocals, pioneering a wild & tender style that makes her the blueprint for Alternative Rock singers like Bijork, Sinead O'connor, Alanis Morrisette, PJ Harvey, Delores O'reiden, Siouxsie Sioux, Liz Fraser, and even Grace Slick! @paul8kangas hear hear. These Masters of War cannot be moved. We can expect many bodies being returned in bin bags, that is those they can scrape up from the carnage. Why do we give the war mongers the vote to kill?
@KurzLuppii But "corporatism" is the only kind of capitalism that ever has existed. "Pure capitalism" is a myth, the system can not be reformed it must be abolished.
@KurzLuppii What you call "corporatism" in America is exactly the same thing that is called "capitalism" in Europe and in the rest of the world. I don't believe that a mutualist free market economy could ever exist, but even if it could the capitalists will never allow that to happen. As long as there is capitalists, they will create state power.
@KurzLuppii You misunderstand, communism is not about everybody being the same in every way. It's about seeing to everybodys needs and potential. In some ways they are the same for all, everybody needs food, safety, community and personal development. But concrete form of these needs differs and all persons develop in more or less different ways.
@KurzLuppii "Equal" does not mean "the same". It means having the same value. Each person (each living thing) is unique and equal before God (if you believe in God). And we already have a society of strife, so equal rights could not produce what already exists. Keep individual differences in choices, physical ability, values, etc. . . . but as a society, give every person fair treatment and value living human beings above money.
The society of strife comes from the fact we force beliefs on each other.
We don't respect the beliefs of others, we force laws claiming to protect the people which actually creates a intersection of contention.
We should value humans above money of course. However, this doesn't mean we are to give handouts, welfare, subsidizes, tax breaks to a groups of people.
Is this the same Buffy that used to be on Sesame Street?I remember her singing on the show(Red White and Blue..?)and she had a little boy named Cody.
