I agree that social norms change from group to group and region to region. However, men (I being one of them) typically do not. A girl with a bikini doesn't lead me toward pure thoughts, but away from them. I not only want my Christian brothers to lead me and encourage me toward holiness, but also my Christian sisters. Just my 2 cents.
I went swimming once with my best friend and her brother. We were with another church's youth group. They told all of us girls to wear t-shirts over our bathing suits. Modesty is an important issue for girls today and one that I feel passionate about. Even some Christian girls don't realize the importance of modesty. Media paints a different picture of what is beautiful, and they fall for it. Not realizing that "modest is hottest."
I do wear a bikini and i'm a christian i do wear modest clothes. Its not all about what you wear its also about how you act...good video about a good topic :)
A one piece is not modest either. Likewise as a male I know it's not modest for me to wear swim trunks. Why? I wouldn't walk outside wearing boxer shorts - so why should I wear swim trunks alone. I only swim where there are not many people... and I now wear a t-shirt if any women (or homosexual men) are around. People shouldn't use our "freedom" and turn it into a snare. I'm sorry - but most of the bathing suits are not modest. As a man I try to avoid swimming in places with women.
If you were hanging out with Jesus, how would you dress? That's how I see it...I'm not bringing honor or glory to God my showing off my cleavage or legs, that's bringing attention and honor to myself...God must increase and I must decrease
the church that i attend has a very lax dress code and some of the women who go there dress more like theyre going out to a night club. there is a time and a place for sexy, and church isnt one of them.
The bible does say for women to dress modestly and to cover our head during prayer. There are biblical references of what respectable women wore and we have paintings of our Virgin Mary. That should be our standard of modesty. Bathing suits, whether one piece or whatever are immodest. IMO, dressing modestly is very important and is separate from acting modestly. So it's not OK to wear a bathing suit to church (!!!) even if you aren't acting like a slut.
Glorifying God has more to do with what is in your heart and mind and how you treat other people and care for the earth and all of its creatures, than whether you wear a bikini or not. I do agree that there are some places (most especially churches, temples, synagogues, mosques, and so on) where it is respectful to dress modestly, and I think everyone should be mindful of that. However, I do not believe that the Bible tells us exactly what to wear. Cultural norms of modesty are more influential.
@66thPsalm if you don't mind me saying this, i wouldn't dare go to service naked, yet I'm guessing that I won't be clothed when I have sex while I'm married. My opinion is that you can't limit it down to two extremes; we're human, we can't even always count on being alive tomorrow
Clothing is meant to cover up, not what we're trying to reveal. Modesty is covering up the secret parts of our body. Parts of the body that promote sensuality and provoke our Christian brothers to lust after us. Cleavage, stomachs, short skirts and low rise jeans that reveal women's panties and bottoms if they bent over, etc. should not be shown and worn. How it must displease God to see us tempting our Christian brothers to sin. Men are visual and that is why God wants us to dress in modesty.

People don't have to check anything to figure out if something is wrong or not. because God has already given us the answer.
We have to be mindful of others because what we do (or don't do) can become an occasion of sin for them.

I don't think it matters where you live; it seems disrespectful to God to wear a bathing suit to church.
