December 24 at 8:00 in the morning, a young 14 year old boy by the name of Scott Johnson was found dead. Doctors couldn't come up with the cause of his death. His mother checked his emails to see if she could figure out what happened. Turns out he was still signed into myspace. She found he had gone to sleep after he read and didn't repost a chain letter. If you don't repost this to six videos a girl with no face will kill you tonight. Sorry don't want to die
hahaha i love how you complain about english grammar and vocubulary. but i'm a french-speaker and i swear that my native language is WAY more difficult than yours.
They add words in the dictionary that are frequantly used. even if meh is basically a sound, it can be added in the dictionary. After all, words themselves aren't based on sounds?
I think the "official dictionary" is the passing fad. They're trying to roll with the times to keep themselves alive and relevant. There are already available too many competing dictionaries, and types of them. And Google translator uses, afaik, algorithms based on cross-comparisons with chunks of translations instead of word-definitions; wikipedia is a "democratic" collective of people arguing and debating about deep meaning of terms; urban-dictionary etc. fills in the gaps. Better things ahead
...So even though we add a new word (Which, where i am seems to happen all the fucking time and its fucking irritating and i'm trying my very best not to succumb to the use of those words) to the spoken language, it has to go through years and years of usage before even considered into the written and then go through a series of councils before accepted
Here in Norway we kinda have two different languages in a sense... the first being the written and the second being the spoken. Now, no one here in Norway speaks the written language, we all speak some form of the spoken language. BUT the language that is in the dictionary is solely the written language....
Its not the job of dictionary compilers to judge the styistic value of a word or whether its a fad. If its been recorded in a medium (Simpsons) and is used/undestood by a sizable amount of English speakers, in it goes! English survives because we allow it to evolve. Unlike the French.
the next one will be "teh". It's so close to meh and it is used all over teh interweb and people are starting to use it purposefully, with a conscious attempt to refer to teh written usage of teh word.
I honestly think this word deserves to be added. Its not just a guttural phrase, like "ah" when you get hurt, its something you decide to say. And If you choose to use it over a more lengthy explanation, that's your choice. I firmly believe it should be added.
Why words are added much faster to the dictionary today than in decades (and centuries) past: the internet.
Information once spread at a painfully slow rate, moving from culture to culture as members of the cultures blended over generations. Anymore, information is passed on around the world in seconds. It's that simple. End of story ^.^
well i would say meh should be added if they also add other short words that people occasionally sprinkle across their speaking. like er, um, uh, things like that. i'm not sure whether or not those are in the dictionary but if they are, then i think meh deserves it just as much as them. if not, meh should not be counted as special in any way.

Goodness! How dare they claim it started in the US!! I've been using "meh" for all my life? And it's definitely well-established - in Singapore and possibly Malaysia! It's used differently, usually at the end of a question, just so not to leave the question hanging - e.g. This word originated from the US meh?
And this word came from the Chinese language (and likely chinese dialects) with a similar purpose - "ma1 吗".
(continued)....it is a vocalisation of indifference. it is the varied and expansive nature of english which makes it the greatest language in the world, it would be stupid to place restrictions on lexical development like the french have as it hinders the growth and organic quality of a language. this guy needs to stop spouting banal uninformed observations and actually know about what he is arguing about.
this guy does not know what he is talking about. it used to take a long time for a word to become established because people did not move around geographically as much and communication was not as readily available and as varied. now that you can contact someone the other side of the world within seconds, be it real-time text chat or vocally, words spread much quicker. also 'meh' does carry lexical meaning...
Meh, people at my school have been saying this since 05, i go to school in England, it we got it from Schneeblayy off of school of rock, then Schnee, then it change to schmeh, and now meh, and what is the simpsons ? we havent heard of it over here ! oh and get over it, go cut your hair ! :)

I see "meh" more and more, but it could be a passing fad, as you say. As for the Simpsons influence, I am Ned Flanders, or so I've been told, and my take on this is... meh :)

I never heard of "meh" before about 6 months ago. (I thought it meant the same as "ish" or "yuck." I guess not.) Now I seem to hear it everywhere.
Should it be in the dictionary? I don't know. Personally, I'd wait a while to put it in.
