@thebigcheese664 its actually about growing up have you ever noticed that trees only grow the way the wind blows theres and interview on the game of snakes and arrows on how and why the made this album
Great song, love the bluesy intro preceding the tempestuous verses, which create great contrast with the more uplifting choruses. Hearing the story behind the making of this song makes me appreciate it even more. Nick Raskulinecz deserves a lot of credit for how driving these verses are. It takes a lot of balls to tell Neil Peart that his drum parts could be better, but like the band said, what resulted totally elevated the song!
To me, this piece is the product of musical evolution. A rare example of 3 bad-asses playing and writing together long enough to produce textures that were previousy unheard. The lyrical genius adds greatly to the mystique of this song, which I think is their best yet. Trying to imagine how long it must take to write, coordinate, and record these songs is the only thing that allows me to wait patiently for the new record!!
I always thought that it was about how some people tend to judge people based solely on religion, and how instead, we need to treat everyone as a unique individual.
@poddish that's an interesting interpretation. If you look at the lyrics it describes religion as "a plague that resists all science" as in hardcore religious people completely dismissing all the scientific evidence for evolution in favor of intelligent design. He talks about "how it's like we're back in the dark ages" which was when religion oppressed intellectual growth, which is happening "in the middle east and the middle west" talking about the Islam faith in the middle east,
@InvaderPOE665 and Christianity in America. "They leave no child behind" is probably referring to George W. Bush known for his strong Christian beliefs, and the lines "pray and pass the ammunition" refer to people today killing for their God aka muslim extremists, which is paralleled with Christianity in "crusaders in a holy alliance." Peart is taking a strong stance on modern religion in this song and also faithless, as illustrated by the line "it's a world of superstition."
I took the "dark ages" part as a reference to the "Holy wars," and how they were purely over which religion was "correct," and the "plague" section as how most people who follow science tend to be immune to these problems. I see your point too, and, because of songs such as "Freewill," "Totem," etc. I think you're right, or at the very least closer to being right than I am.
Whatever the newest, most exciting thought you have about human existence is, Neil already knows about it, has analyzed it from multiple perspectives, and then wrote a song about his experience.
This song at about 50 seconds in reminds me of Stone Temple Piolits lol - nevertheless an awesome song from an awesome album, maybe the best on the album
i love neil's way of playin drums alex's guitar style and geddy's awsome bass licks and everything i listen to everything by rush they r the best band in the world and again they should play this on mtv cause all the new music is more techno and retarted this is wat u call music not nigger shit or techno shit either
Once again, Alex delivers flawlessly! He plays the guitar like no one else...gives me the chills. Long live Rush! I hope they never retire and will be rocking out at the age of 70. LOL. We can only hope.
somehow I know that RUSH the holy trinity of rock knows about you illumined ones I must be one of your most prized tortured ones one day you will torture me and you will be thinking that you are doing God service remember the scripture?you will capture me and torture me and kill me thats a given
@tacosalad98 it is more intricate and complex. which makes it better as a composition. i love old rush, but i am glad they are not stamping out the same stuff or they would just be another 70's revival band.... that 3/4 rock is tight.
man, this sounds so much like zeppelin with a sick rush feel, and a little post grunge. man, this album is one of their all time best. every song on it just seems to good to be true.
This song is awesome. Ever since I've been listening to the 3 Different Stages disks, though, I haven't been able to listen to studio recordings the same way. Rush is just so god damn awesome in live performance XD
I think there are no overdubs on the intro? Must be really hard to play then. I saw steve smith do a similar thing where left and right hands do 2 independent patterns it looks really weird.
yupyup! its weird alot of people dont like this rush cd it took a while for me but these songs grew on me, i heard somewhere rush is working on a new cd, but i dont know if thats true or not

Now it's come to this
Hollow speeches of mass deception
From the Middle East to the Middle West
Like crusaders in a holy alliance
"Now it's come to this
Like we're back in the dark ages
From the Middle East to the Middle West
It's a plague that resists our science"

love the guitar into, very much sounds like the blues. Heck rush should have kept that same beginning intro and made a this song a blues type song.
