Start with their 1992 album "Congregation", it is amazing. If you like the Afghan Whigs, the frontman Greg Dulli is very talented and has had some more recent projects like "The Twilight Singers" and "the Gutter Twins". I suggest you check them out too.
"What Jail is Like" & "Uptown Avondale" are two good EP's as well. I think the band was defunct by about 1996, so the bulk of their output will be from 1992-94.
Hey, I just started getting into these guys. My buddy has always been into these guys and he got me the Unbreakable: A Retrospective 19902006 cd...it's got a little bit of all their stuff. Very cool. I'm hooked!
There was an old political party in the US called the "Whig" Party. Whig stood for With hope in God. I dunno if that's what the Afghan Whigs meant with their title. I also heard a rumor that the Afghan Whigs were named after a biker gang from Florida. I don't know how true that is though.
Afghan Whigs never got the proper accolades as some of the other Alternative Rock back in the late 80's inot the mid 90's but Greg Dulli and crew still kicked ass regardless!!!
I'm not a big Afghan Whigs fan but I have heard a lot of their stuff and I can honestly say that this is definitely my favorite song of theirs. I also like the song retarded.
First time i heard saw this on TV, i was drunk, stoned and bouncing through the living room in the middle of the night. And singing along although I never heard it before.
On the male emotions/behavior I'd agree. But it's a picture of what culture and female behaviour does to us. Women are complicated and sometimes it's their own fault for being that way. You can flame me and give me poor ratings now, k thx bai.
Back then showing someone smoke in a video wasn't a big deal. Music videos have changed a lot because I remember seeing guns in videos but can't have that now. See back then we knew better. Glad I still have the video tape of Debonair but you know I had to come on here to read people's comments. I'd still rather rock out to this instead of what's out today.
the uncesored video shows a girl having an abortion in a bathroom stall. i saw it on jbtv when the cd first came out. i never stopped listening to them since ,they are so fucking awesome.
the band "afghan whigs" put out this song called "debonair" back in 1993, so i think that you're mistaken here, kiddo. please keep your mouth shut when the grown-ups are talking from now on, ok?
Wow, Smokin a somke in the video. Didnt they ban that shit on youtube? It might corrupt the kids that are cookin up asprin and cough syrup to make tea.
Gorgeous song. They fall into that catagory of "Greatest Bands You've Never Heard Of" I caught them on The Alternative a few years agos and have been a fan ever since.
I have been trying to hear this song and see this video since 1994. I had forgotten the name of the band, but then I saw Letterman last night, and there were the Gutter Twins. I knew I recognized the guy with the black hair... it was Greg Dulli... wouldn't you know, I find him on Wikipedia, and the AFghan Whigs on YouTube... Great Song! Thanks for posting!
I love it when stuff like that happens. Unforgettable songs that you remember for more than months...years, but never know the artist and look and look and when you find them its like your life is complete
Exactly right! Very well put. At 3:30, he looks so dejected, defeated, and spirit crushed as he sings, "Tonight I go to hell". Powerful, moving stuff. One of the most profound, tragic songs ever crafted by the human hand.

Gangs, bikers, anti-colonialism ... that is all very funny but I fear, it is a bit off. While there have been Whigs ( as opposed to The Tories) in England since the mid 1800's. I'm pretty sure that Greg Dulli picked the Afghan part up because the word was constantly in the press. The Soviets were slowly losing to the Afghans (Osama & pals backed by the U.S.) and it was in the morning paper every other day from '78 to '89 or so.
After a biker gang from the '60s. All black (possibly Muslim) membership I think. The (gang) name originally appears to have been reference to opposition to British colonialism in central and southern Asia during the 19th century.
Whigs were originally Scottish Presbytarian sepratists in the 17th century. In opposition to the British crown they supported the Americans in the War of Independence Google Whigs (or, god forbid, open a book) it to find out more.

Easily one of the most inspired bands of the 90s. For as accessable as their music is, its a damn shame they didn't break out!
This is one of my favorite songs from them, off of my favorite Afghan Whigs album, "Gentleman."
Greg Dulli deserves some serious credit for being a musical genius. Enough said.
