  • Wow, I can see some of the work you did on this video to make it look real, but didn't begin to notice until I watched it 4 or 5 times. Really good job on this. Good song, good singer, good group... good period in time.

  • merci à ce merveilleux groupe...autre chose que la soupe qu'on nous sert actuellement...

  • what a great decade! Too bad I was born on the late 70´s. Too bad I wasn´t born on the 50s.

  • 2012 !!

  • look up Little Jackie's version...GREAT VERSION! Imani Coppola killed it!

  • The singers, the songwriting, the arrangements, the orchestra, the backing singers. Hey, it's only talent. let's forget all that and listen to xfactor.

  • A Top 5 hit for The Shangri-La's in the fall of 1964.

  • such a sweet song.

  • amazing

  • When Mary Weiss sings this song now, she now sings it one half-step lower than on the 1979 Aerosmith cover version.

  • love love this song and The Shangri Las

  • Thank you Amy Winehouse for introducing me this lovely group. The Shangri-las have such beautiful songs. I'm very glad I found them :)

  • They dont make um like this anymore good job we ave them now to play

  • Classic girl-group magic, great for its day, and still a lovely remembrance.

  • mary weiss, just put on a leather jacket and get on the back of my harley, already.

  • I feel kinda like "Pictures of Lilly"...

  • want to be a star? here is a valuable kesson--

  • This song inspired Amy Winehouse's song "Back to Black". I love this song and back to black. But everytime i listen to this song, i think of Amy :( Amy used to sing parts of this song with her song. It sounded beautiful.

  • @Metspart .... i'm hearing you.... Amy rocked this with "black to back".... You know there's a clip somewhere on here, showing all the times that she infused this song into hers... very cool

    I LOVE MARY WEISS!! ;)

  • i heard this on XPN the other day, sexy voice

  • I think that for the most part, only those of us that were actually there in 64 can really appreciate just what these old songs mean. I was 11, and I had a transistor radio pasted to my ear every waking minute. (I don't hear so good these days, lol) But in that time it was like music was exploding, expanding, and evolving almost daily. It was a very very special time , the likes of which has never been seen since. Can I get a witness?

  • @TheWick53 Amen to that. I feel the same. A very wonderful time of music.

  • Good job of making Something out of almost nothing.

Maay Weiss' face is worth the whole vid.

    Kudos!

  • You got that right ,1964 freshman in high school, they cant make music like this any more.

  • not a bad effort man ,, nice one

  • and all this time I thought aerosmith wrote this song lol

  • best par from 1:25...the goodfellas..Henry..

  • could of been recorded yesterday so so so good

  • There was a difference in the Divas of the 60s, and those of the 90s, 00s, etc. They had class.

I'm 25, and I absolutely loathe my generation for hoisting the likes of Ke$ha and other pop star icons above our shoulders. We are a smart and capable generation, but unmotivated - partially because of our iconic fixations.

  • @goodolarchie Interestingly enough, wide name celebrities existed in china in the 600s AD. Fun fact, celebrities have been looked up to forever. We can't blame our lack of motivation on celebrity culture.

  • @Metspart Curiously, to what would you attribute it, o spouter of facts?

  • @goodolarchie The rise of technology on an exponential scale. Why go over to a friends house when you can see what they are up to on Facebook and Twitter?

  • @Metspart That accounts for the decline in real human contact and general cohesiveness / empathy, but not motivation. I'm talking about why our (I'm assuming you're not over 30 if you mean to comment on it) generation is regarded as slackers. If anything, the apogee of the information age (the exponential rise of tech as you describe) is the one last string of hope remaining for innovation and motivation alike. E.g. google, facebook and the slurry of silicon valley startups - our contribution

  • @goodolarchie agree to disagree

  • Does anyone know if the original seven minute demo of this song, made by Shadow Morton to sell this song, still exists? It make Red Bird sign them, so it must be worth a listen!

  • Wasn't this on the flipside of the 45 Leader of the Pack?

  • @KeelyRae no,a seperate release and may i add,a hit in it's own right

  • @doowopman49 you spelled separate wrong

  • A true classic and example of good music!

  • Let think let think what can I dooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • I think you did a great job creating it!

  • Have I just done too much acid...or is this video pretty fucking jumpy?

  • @muthahoho it is jumpy... but so was cid lol.

  • @muthahoho I'm voting, it's the acid. :)

  • Brill thanks for posting!

  • "hey Henry you want the leg or the wing"

  • Still stuck on 60s girl groups today. Shangri Las! Sing it Mary!!

  • It's a very nice song, and the girl performs it in a way that makes me quite emotional...

  • Aerosmith really put some testosterone into this song :)

  • Simply brilliant! The memories are flooding my brain right now~

    It's all good.

  • @chanceramone no she just kind of looks like her in this video

  • I am a straight up metal head, but I absolutely love this song. Her voice is so beautiful, great great song.

  • This group had attitude...dangerous...separated them from other girl groups. They were special for sure...

  • Billy Joel played piano on the demo. Not sure if he's on this record or not.

  • lead singer looks like Theresa from warpaint

  • Why are people arguing? Mary of the Shangri-Las must have liked the Aerosmith version 'cos she sang backing vocals on it!

  • Wonderful! If you haven't already, check out the Imelda May/Jeff Beck version, also great (but in a different way)

  • I love this song!

  • The Boy got Drafted..."he went away far across the Sea" Viet Nam ?

  • @mygsvx Probably not Vietnam as in 64 things hadn't heated up just yet, but maybe.

  • Another '60's classic. I still hear this a lot on my local oldies station.

  • capone killed this shit !!!!

  • This song has been stuck in my head all day, so I am here to alleviate that problem. I find the only way to get rid of an earworm is to crank the song and bellow it out in all its glory.

  • @jenzeppelin And what a great song this is! No wonder it has been looping around in my head.

  • 1:20 gives me goosebumps

  • One of the most atmospheric pop records ever made.

  • steven tyler is a much better singer imho...thats why they are still around after 30+ years of playing music unlike the shangri-las...aerosmith is arguably the best american rock and roll band

  • I think Aerosmith definitely did justice to the original version.

  • These were the Bad Girls of Rock & Roll in the early 60's. They were teenage New Yorkers with a bit of an edge to them. They were just great!...

  • @54nomore You got that right!

  • heaven !!

  • "Henry do you like the leg or the wing, or are you still going for the old hearts and lungs?' GoodFellas

  • this song goes.. i think i heared this on the aslan label..

  • One of the sexiest voices in rock history!

  • Did you "borrow" hthis footage from" girl groups : the story of a sound"?

  • Go get your ******* shine box

  • Go get your ******* shine box

  • I was born way later than I should have been.

  • cool! but i think that Aerosmith version is better :)

  • @felixmovies: you're joking right?

  • "Free As A Bird" - when the Threetles revived this 1977 Lennon demo in 1995, they added a middle section. Unfortunately, they added the middle section from the 1964 Shangri-Las hit "Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)."

  • The Long Island sound of the Shangri-Las!

  • @kixigvak

    Actually, they were from Queens.

  • Even if you can't locate the original video, this was a very nice tribute to a legendary girl-group. Thanks for posting this.

  • I didn't even know this version of this song existed. I knew Aerosmith did it, guess I know now.

  • I think its their best song. I never saw them but like their songs.

  • the sexiest girl group ever!

  • you did a great job. love the video from one of the great groups.

  • love <333

  • Just what a rock and roll ballad should be-tough and sexy as hell!

  • нормалёк

  • Shangs 4ever.

  • outstanding!

  • This song will always remind me of pesci and deniro digging up a corpse, and ray liotta off to the side puking

  • This is a Shangri-las song. Now Aerosmith just covered a bad ass classic. They didn't change anything except for the instruments. instead of the piano you have guitars. changed the voice from female to male. Other than that they didn't change the song at all.

  • Mondo Trasho! oh no, oh no, oh no no no no no

  • Mary the Shangs lead singer sang backing vocals on the Aerosmith version - so I think she approved! Still think the original is something really special though.

  • This guy sampled this song the best .. /watch?v=vP8Egp71_5M

  • @47 seconds. epic. THE 'HEATMAKERZ' SAMPLE THIS IN THE SONG 'OH NO' BY CAPONE of THE GROUP 'C.N.N'

  • Excellent video coolerator!!!!!What an amazing song.....Amazing group.....

  • Nice job, coolerator 3, thank you!

  • The Go-Go's used to do a killer cover of this song

  • A Classic Girl Group Song !!!!!!

  • Wow, it the melodic part sounds like I've heard it before, but not the walkin in the sand part. weird. Is this a remake? have others remade it? Such a good song.

  • @phillipjfry1979

This is the original, there have been several covers of varying degrees of awesome.

  • I love this

  • gourgeous music, production and recording

if this was released today, would certainly be a # 1

  • 1964 was THE YEAR for music!!!!!!!!!

  • Love this song. My mother went to high school with these girls!

  • Did they go to Andrew Jackson High...were they of Jewish heritage....

  • @wrff1045 Andrew Jackson in Queens? My older sister went to Jackson graduated 69. I went to Cardozo graduated 79'.

  • @kwacou And I spent a Jackson yesterday.

  • I read somewhere that Billy Joel was playing piano on this tune - does anyone know that this is true?

  • He definately played on a demo of the song...don't think he was on the final cut.

  • I think you did a pretty darn good job coolerator3. A lot of the original videos from the early to mid 60s video from the studios soundtrack doesn't match the video any better.

  • hard to believe they were all like 15 years old when they did this

  • @madpapi

Yes, very hard to believe. Especially seen from the point that Betty Weiss was 18, Mary Weiss 16 Marge 17 and so was Mary Ann when they formed the group.

  • No surprise Marge was 17 and so was Mary Ann seeing as they were twins.

  • Really? You're making me feel like a dirty pedo.

  • @suffern63 it was the early sixties, most were married before they were finished highschool. They didnt look like choir girls either, that black leather must have been pretty daring back then.

  • no no no no no

  • "Free As A Bird" - when the Threetles revived this 1977 Lennon demo in 1995, they added a middle section. Unfortunately, they added the middle section from the 1964 Shangri-Las hit "Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)." hmmm

  • found it!

  • fantastic voices.why were shangri las songs so short.should have been a 10 minute epic.

  • Thought you'd like to know: 3 mins was the general rule during that era. 3 min wonders as they were sometimes known. 10 mins wouldn't get airplay and just wouldn't fit on a 45rpm single... regards,

  • fantastic singers and real

  • Saw them live in Nashville in the 60's...I think they jump started puberty!!

  • Nice statement. Put a smile on my face;-)

  • @OBDjFH05 These girls are from Queens N.Y> I met the Blond at a back yard party in 1970. She was so beautiful. I couldnt take my eyes off her. She was checking me out, but I was with my girlfriend. My buddy Angelo had gone out with her some years before then.. Cambria Heights Queens Johnny G.....

  • The way they're swinging their arms makes it look like they're doing the Hokey Pokie.

  • John Lennon borrowed a part for his 'free as a bird' song....Both legendary.

  • fit

  • Where's Ronnie?

  • You mean Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes? Oddly she was not in the Shangri-Las.

  • To my ear, this is far and away their best record. Its

girl group doo wop, alright, but its another order of development. Five big ones.

  • Shangs forever!

  • love that song, takes me way back.....

  • Brilliant sound, but i can see that this is quite a melancholy song....!

  • I learned long ago that we need to respect each other's opinions. Its pretty narrow minded to attack Aerosmith just because they remade a song you liked. Aerosmith made a lot of good music, most of them original.

I think both versions are good. The Shangri La's made the original and that counts for a lot also I think her voice is better (plus she's a pretty girl). But Aerosmith has better musicians and better recording quality.

Aersosmith introduced this song to another generation.

  • @tdyck12345 some songs should be left alone. Another time another era.

This captured the feel of the early rebelious girls not be cheapened by a bunch of guys that look like girls. That's my opinion!

  • @khj93play ---Oh yeah, ...this one's so haunting.... I remember, I was just a kid in the summer, getting ready for the Fall and going into 7th grade ... I was so excited because I was old enough to have a boyfriend. I sketched a picture in pencil of a silhouette of two people walking on the beach while this song was playing and seagulls calling all around. No one can ever touch this song. It's locked in its own golden time capsule of 1963.

  • @durgaaa Oh yeah, walking in the sand with the sound of seagulls reminded me of another song called "Wonderful Summer" of the year before. "Walking In The Sand " was released in "64. Thanks for the reply!

  • @tdyck12345 What dumb kids don't understand is there is that just because you like something, it does not make it "better". And then when they take them into a new genre there is no longer a comparison. Someone who likes rock would be more prone to like the Aerosmith version better.

Nothing wrong with a remake. I personally prefer when people take the song and personalize it like Judas Priest did with Diamonds and Rust.

  • Great record ,still sounds good today

  • yeah they did cover songs but they wrote songs too. and why dont you attack jeff beck while your at it he cover this song also.

  • damn they looked sexy in the leather outfit =)

  • really they were really styling for their tiem in a classy way, lace and leather what a fantastic combination they came up with!

  • Jeff Barry was co-producer. He had just come from working with Phil Spector. Has that Wall of Sound sound.

  • :D Nice song!

  • This is a Hardcore song but people dont know it...

  • what a classic glad to see its still appreciated still get that chill.

  • This song sends chills up and down my spine - from 1964, when I was born!

  • One of the most atmospheric pop records ever.

  • this is like the female version of the beatles they are so underrated,we need to remind people of this group.

  • I love this song! its so cool that it suddenly change tempo and so... :)

  • coool voice

  • amy winehouse sampled this song

  • I love it when Amy sampled this i thought it sounded great

  • One of the most unique songs of the era. Love this. Thanks!

  • I hope you go deaf at an early age

  • definately, she makes some reference to this band in a couple of her interviews

  • Sad life for the twins here. One died in early 70's from drug use, and the other died in 90's.

  • Oh, that great make-up and fab hairstyles! Wonderful music, too.

  • Nice job coolerator!

  • You have to check out the Shangri-Las and "He Cried" here on YouTube... It is awesome. Mary Weiss is something else...wow.
