I got sent home in 9th grade because I cut the ass cheeks out of my jeans and went to school. I had just seen VH in Tampa, and well, thought the chicks would dig it. I didn't make it past home room.
EXACTLY! Sure, Roth has his detractors, but, not even the haters can deny that this was the absolute most fucking insane crowd ANY band had seen in the states since I don't know when. I remember recording some of their set that night off the radio as a 13-year old in '83. How many bands can play a live set that still has people drooling over it 27 years on? This may not have been VH's absolute best set, but, it's still every bit as legendary as Hendrix or the Who @ Woodstock.
I went to this concert and have the original video of it. In response to is daves voice overdubbed...yes it is...its overdubbed on the two other showtime release songs from van halen pretty woman and runnin with the devil but I have been a VH fan since 78
Its been two months since you asked this question...yes he is overdubbed on this song and two others that showtime released.pretty woman and runnin w devil VH fan since 78 i like roth and hagar but didnt buy into the vh3 days w gary cherone
Doesn't sound overdubbed after they sang Happy Trails. Dave's voice went real high and off key. Why would they overdubb something that didn't sound like the original recording. Not being a smart ass or nothing - just really wondering. Watch around 4:45. Sounds like Dave's sloppy, dont't give a shit voice, instead of an overdubb. Thanks.
this was daves worst voice sounding concert that i ever saw....showtime had him and others from the concert bill (scopions triumph and quiet riot)do voiceovers for their special on the us festival... van halen was making 17000 a minute each....to this day they are still the most paid performers for a concert.
I saw the old Van Halen several times myself. Dave just didn't sing too much, but I didn't care. They were my idols. I guess Dave's voice just isn't strong enough to belt it out night after night. Seems like he saved his voice for recordings, I guess.
I agree with you about all. Dave and VH only had two concerts to perform earlier that year...There was no tour in early 83....but two huge tours during the Fair warning and 1984 tours.
My very first concert was the 1981 Fair Warning tour, and throughout the '80s, I would go on to attend close to 40 rock concerts. Yes, Van Halen was my favorite group, and I'm a bit partial, but the 1981 concert would prove to be the standard by which all other concerts I attended would be measured. No concert ever made it, not even the '82 or '84 Van Halen tours. Seriously, that tour was awsome.
Oh, I'm in Missouri now, but I grew in Mississippi - two hours from Biloxi, two hours from Jackson and two and a half hours from New Orleans. Those three cities hosted hundreds of concerts in the '70s and '80s. It was great growing in south Mississippi. Believe it or not, rock 'n' roll ruled there, just like it did everywhere else back in the day.
Yeah, they were a little sloppy at the US Festival. I would surmise that the boys had too much time on their hands that day, and you know what happens when rock stars don't have anything to do. They get wasted. I saw classic Van Halen many times, and they we're usually a little sharper than this. But this video tells you how powerful their effect was on audiences. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this! They are the greatest of all time.
There are full cuntcert DVDs available. I've have one but keep in mind, the boys (especially Dave) were pretty fucked up and the first five plus songs were not the cleanest live songs by VH.
@LUTS67 I have like, 3 copies of the usfest on dvd. Dave was SO fucked up he couldn't feel the stage underneath his feet, but the rest of the band was on FIRE!!
This is what I call Rock and Roll. Thanks to our beloved record companies this is the first generation of American youth to grow up without rock and roll being a dominant force since the 50's. Sad.
Thank you so much, VHfan66! Bitchin' vid.! This finally ends all the negativity from fans that went to the US Festival and said VH's performance sucked! They probably weren't hardcore VH fans! I saw them at the Forum in Los Angeles in 1984! They kicked ass then, too!
Most insane crowd ever !

I think that's the loudest I've ever heard a crowd at a show! Amazing. At the peak of their career! DLR the only front man for VH!

Is Dave's vocal overdubbed on this? He sounds more in tune than usual. Check out around 1:05; the vocals don't match the video.

yes they are...this is 1 of 3 songs that aired on Showtime back in '83.
