I actually did a search of cat breeds allowed into Australia & to my surprise the Bengal Cat is allowed Into our country If our government is so worried about the Savannah Cat then why don't they just allow F5 males & F3 to F4 females, These generations would only have a single figure percentage of Serval In them now where's the sense in that.
Thank you so much for making this video!!! I have a savannah and she´s the SWEETEST girl EVER! I'm totally in love with my baby girl and she's very attached to all of us, she even plaays fetch!! Can't wait to see her grow.. I have a couple of vids of her in my channel and more coming soon, feel free to watch them :)
@stratocaster1986able Starbuck is not named after the coffee store. He is named after the original SiFi battlestar gallatica character "Starbuck" he was a pilot and a fried of Lee Adama in the series.
I read the article from Big Cat Rescue & It made very Interesting reading but It hasn't changed my view on Savannah Cats I love this cat breed so much & I hope I can get the chance to Interact & meet some of these beautiful cats when I visit the US In 2013.
@OpiumBeast ..Funny!, They get chicken when they want it. Check out some of the newer videos. I have moved from where this video was filmed. I have 4 -5 videos of me walking outside at the new place that I have put up just recently.
It's a vanity pet. I'd rather go to the pound and save a cat from being put to sleep than have a wild animal forced to breed with a domestic just so I can look fancy with my long-limbed pet. Why yes I paid $3000 for my cat, aren't you jealous? :P
@Alysaria There are many different sides to look at things. You can see this cat as a venity pet, but then wouldn't you say the same for all the pure breed dogs out there? To get different colors and varities did they have to "force" then them breed with each other? I have volunteered at many pounds before. The cats are very different from the ones grown up in a good home. Some are very nice, other will never fully trust you. They never tell you the full story when your adopting.
@spritedrin Do you want a pet that will never love you or would you go through with it just to make yourself feel better, like your doing something right?
@spritedrin I have and do make the same claim of pure bred animals. There are enough animals put down every year without breeding more just because they look cool. I wasn't arguing personality, and anyone can be misleading... I know the Humane Society where I live is straight forward. Diet, allergies, behavioral issues, whether they're ok with other animals or kids is all written out on the animal's sheet and hanging in full view. They even mention if it's been adopted and returned and why.
@Alysaria So? Some people want a certain type of pet. Sometimes that pet happens to be an exotic animal, or an expensive one. That doesn't mean they are waving it around like a price tag, lots of people really like the animals and want to give them a good home.
@Alysaria Pure-bred dogs wouldn't exist if it weren't for that market, either. Following that logic, no one should have pets. As for what happens when the serval is too old to breed... what exactly does that mean? Does that mean that their owners just put them down or get rid of them? Once again, it really is not fair to classify all owners of exotic pets to be irresponsible, just because there are some who are. I know plenty of dog owners who are irresponsible too.
@marler3 The thing is, domesticated dogs don't exist in the wild. They have had thousands of years to be bred into something that barely resembles a wild animal. They are not bred with wolves and other wild animals to produce something half wild....and they certainly aren't bred with something endangered. (Maybe some are, but they aren't as prevalent as with cats). My major issue is that there are more half-breed wild animals in captivity than their are wild counterparts...
@marler3 And I sincerely doubt a wild animal/liability is going to be kept around when it can't turn a profit anymore for a breeder who is only interested in making money.
@marler3 Totally agree I have 2 cats & the love they give me is something money can't buy it's simply priceless, I love the Savannah for it's wild looks & it's Intelligent & friendly nature & It's something that I wouldn't flash around & treat like a novelty. To me a Savannah would be a fantastic friend like my 2 cats are now I work from home so I'd love to dedicate my time to owning a Savannah & giving the love & friendship it deserves
@Alysaria I agree totally, but I volunteer adopting rescued cats, so I'm biased. I admit that savannahs and bengals are really beautiful, exciting cats, and I can't say I worry about them being adopted! Very good video, and thanks for stressing the room and attention these critters need.
I love the work BCR does for wild cats. It pisses me off that they paint all hybrids with one stroke. Hybridization happens naturally in the wild as well. I have a bengal / siamese mix that was rescued. I was scared by all the horror BCR painted with the hybrid cats. They were wrong on all accounts. Niles is the sweetest most affectionate kitty. when I was in S. Africa I saw a kitty that looked hugely like a Savannah. It was an outside house cat. I bet the hybridization had happened naturally.
@randerdk Well said I'm looking at even sponsoring a couple of Cats from BCR because I think the work they do is fantastic but In terms of the hybrid cat issue I do not agree, I've read so many positive stories about the Savannah they are a miss understood breed even here In Australia the anti cat lobby who are nothing but lying scumbags have made this breed out to be a major danger to Australia when it's further from the truth. The Savannah has a rightful place In Australia.
We have a Savannah. I hope this doesn't come back to haunt me. He has NEVER gone to the bathroom outside the litter box. (Other than maybe a little stuck to his butt and he scoots on carpet like any animal would do) He has claws and if you hold him in a way he doesn't like he might scratch you trying to get away, but he has and would never intentionally bite or scratch us just because he is mean. He is sweet nice guy that we would never think of getting rid of. People need to learn the facts
To continue, I'm all for potential pet owners to try to find a pet at the local animal shelter, as BCR suggests. But if you must have a certain breed, find a responsible breeder to find out about special needs certain breeds have. Consider the advice current owners may give you.As with everything, don't just listen to one side of the story. You'll make a more informed decision that way. Thanks, @lifeatthesharpend for this informative video, as well as part 2.
My big problem with BCR was with a comment they made to one of their videos. Can't find it now, it may be a vid they closed comments on. They attempted to paint savannah breeders with the broad brush of "puppy mill". I'm aware irresponsible breeders of cats and dogs like that exist, but I do not buy this broad brush approach. BCR does a good service, but they also have an agenda that leaves out a great deal of facts.Responsible breeders will make potential owners aware of needs savannahs have.
How can you rescue these cats? Do you have to have a license? I feel so bad for them, I have had dogs all my life and I know how an animal attaches to a person, wish people would think about their decisions..they bought this animal..care for it.
Thanks for this video! There were a lot of things I disagreed with in BCR's Savannah cat video, too. I've seen many who own (NOT owned! Still OWN!) and a few I know as friends who have them and would uphold the right to bare arms before letting anyone take their family members away - let alone let anything bad happen to them. Just because of a few bad apples, don't take something so special away from the good ones. ;-)
I have two F2 Savannahs and thanks for making the video BCR are way out of line in saying that Savannah's are these wild animals. I've have mine for 6 yrs without any problems they are very fun and loving.
Great video. I like how you describe everything. People often over emphasize the cat's wildness and how difficult it is to handle & raise, instead of the obligation for love and care we take for granted with 'domestic' animals. Thank you for posting this!
Thank you for your honest and swift response! your videos have been viewed allot by people interested in these cats, greatly informative brother. Keep up the good work.
@aky19832001 I find that all cats have their own unique personalities. Since this video was posted I started raising them. I find that most F3's and later generations behave like a normal cat. I raise my kittens indoors in a dedicated room inside our home. They interact with me from birth and before their eyes have opened. I let them crawl all over me and my face included so they know what I smell like and that they trust me. My kittens tend to be very loving because of this.
Sorry, I was being careless, I was referring to a Serval. I automatically assume allot of felines still retain that strong hunting instincts. But for example how different in temper are they with respect to maintance.
Ive been researching Savannah for some time, and I got allot of mixed answers, I've logically concluded that it all depends on breeding and then how you raise them. Oddly enough I work with large German Shephards all day and yet cats still intrigue.
@aky19832001 Not sure what you are talking about, I have never been with a tiger. Do you mean a Serval? or Savannah? A Savannah is a domestic cat. I have a bunch of them that sleep with me and share the house with me. They eat cat food and purr is that what you mean? I never thought that tiger did that.
@Lifeatthesharpend How are their temperaments the F1 vs F2 vs F3? Which ones are calmer etc? Do they ever just cuddle and lay by you? Are the F3s more affectionate/ calmer? Are F3s better for a 2 bedroom condominium? Thanks so much!!
@freddyphredphred Well aside the fact that I recently found out a great deal of servals, male and female, will spray whether they are fixed or not; THIS is the best explanation of Savannah cats from F0 (pure Serval) - F7 Savannah: savannahs.webs.com/f1vsf2vsf3vsf4.htm
@aky19832001 Not even a full serval has the same temperament as a tiger, not even close. I would really suggest that you don't research online for this stuff (that is, if you were researching online) because the information that you'll find about big cats is really inaccurate. I have experience with big cats, servals are wild cats, but nothing like tigers.
These are lovely cats but they are not fir just anybody. You do have to know how to properly care for them, it's people who don't do right by their cats that give them a bad name.
I have a savannah they r lovely nccats big rescue wants them to be in the wild go to big cat rescue and vote there documents and there so called sanctuary in google low vote them dont let them spread hatred about this pet
@jockim100 I'm not exactly sure what they are claiming an Ashera is. From my understanding early Savannahs were Servals crossed with Bengals. Now days they use other outcrosses and commonly using lower % Savannahs as well.
cool but my cats awesome enough lol the one in the former video definatly looked F1. They do seem good if you know what you are doing, but demestic cats adopted young enough and held enough become sweet much easier. go demestics! lol :)
If they are out-crossed to a Bengal then they are not getting 100% domestic cat from that side, since Bengals come from Asian Leopard cats. So you are actually introducing two exotic cat species with some domestic thrown in there.
@Atochabsh True, many Savannahs have been crossed with a Bengal so there is some ALC in the gene. TICA has made the Bengal a non-permissible outcross for that reason. If you consider the Bengal to have 5 to 10% of ALC for a SBT Bengal and it being a few gens back then the ALC % in the would be small. So for example Seyah's mother was 50/50 Bengal/Serval, so wild blood would be (100 + 10) / 2 = 55% and Seyah would be 27.5% wild, assuming the mother 10% ALC, but she is probably to 5 / 6% ALC
whether a cat is going to be aggressive or not really depends on the temperament of the animal itself and not necessarily breed or specie. Look at all the lions that Kevin Richardson handles: one could say that they are "tame" because of the way they interact with him. But tame or not, a lion can still kill you even accidentally.
on youtube Big Cat TV page i wanted to live them a comment ... but they hade disabled there comments abbs? ... obviously they dont want to hear what we have to say? ... but for u'r cat's they r beautiful may they have long happy live's :)
@jo2lianhua I believe that BCR has a one sided view. I love my cats and they would never hurt me or anyone else, but they are animals and animals can be provoked. Cats are cats and some cats are nice well behaved and some are not. I have not had any issues due to cat agression. That is not to say that ALL cats will be that way. I have never witnessed anything that a normal cat would not do.
you can train most cats to walk on a leash at any age but it takes a lot of time and patience and it has to be done in the right way. it is not the same experience as walking a dog.
These are large, meat eating type cats, I am pretty much afraid to own one due to the hugeosity factor, they might go for the jugular if they get too hungry.
@Lifeatthesharpend Haha, you are lucky I guess. How much do these cats cost? I love cats, but, this huge kitties would be a little scary, cats in general are nuts so you must have to really keep looking over your shoulder. Do you walk that beast on a leash, I hear they really like that.
@tickyul some are expensive some are not. Think of a volume dial. F1 is the loudest most wild and largest cat and F7 the smallest most domestic cat you can get. The F7 is really just a domestic with spots and large ears and short tail , cost about the same as any pure breed show quality cat does. F1 are extremely expensive and is only for someone that is prepared to take care of a wild cat or in this case a half wild cat.
@tickyul you need to look as Seyah's last 2 videos "Wild African Cat (Seyah the Savannah)" and "Seyah and His Ball" those 2 videos will give you and idea of what he is like at home and when I let him out for a walk around the yard with me. Starbuck is pretty much the same way. Plus they both come normally when I call them if they are not with me on the property.
@Lifeatthesharpend And when these huge cats decide to play rough with you...uh, what do you do....run to a designated safe room....LOL. The cost to feed these beasts must be quite a bit, do you ever let them hunt live food, that would be neat. So you are saying the MORE insane and wild the cat...the more it costs...shouldn't it be the other way around? How do these huge, meat eating type cats do with other...uh, NORMAL cats...dogs?? I could easily see this cat getting carried away and...yikers.
@tickyul I have had them for so long, to me they act just like normal cats do. I have everything from F1 (the father is a serval) down to F7 ( 7 gens removed from wild blood ) In some cases. the more domestic cats (F7's) can be more unpredictable than the others. In the new place I let Sayah and Starbuck run the yard when I'm home. Seyah has become the big lizard hunter. Starbuck tries to catch rabbits but never has gotten one. They are both my big babies and always come when I call them.
@Lifeatthesharpend I saw a guy walking a huge cat, it must have been a Serval. The cat was huge (for a domestic cat) and looked like it was really enjoying being walked on a leash. It kinda reminded me of a pitbull being walked because the cat was pulling the guy walking him. Walking a cat like that must be hard, you would get stopped every ten feet by people wanting to ask questions and pet (maybe?) it.
@tickyul I find that cats in general are scared of new situations. For a cat to be out on a leash it would need to be very used to it and normally started out as a kitten. When I walk Apollo he will be excited at the beginning of the walk and walk in front of me but after a while he will trail and it depends on if he is comfortable where he is. He is a pretty small cat also, only about 10lbs
@Lifeatthesharpend Ten pounds huh? If I was to get one of these cats I would want more of a hugeosity factor, make it more like owning a mountain lion or some other wild cat. Do you feed this cat a special diet? I know everyone likes a big, fat kitty, kinda easy with the junk catfood out there now. You should let him catch and devour rats or bunnies (just joking.......kinda.).
@tickyul Well , I dont have any "monster big cats" Seyah is about 18 lbs now, Starbuck is about 14 and Apollo is about 10 -11 lbs. My largest is Ruby she is 18.5 lbs. she is only 11 months old and is a sweet kitten. I have had her to petco and homedepot before. I feed wellness core and RAW food to anyone who wants it. The RAW is just ground chicken and some additives. I let Seyah run around the property when I'm working the yard, and he has not caught anything yet, except lizzards. L
@tickyul I'm not sure what power feeding her is, but Savannahs are suppose to be tall and slender. They grow until they are just over 2 years old so she has plenty of time left, she is only 12 months old right now. My guess is that she will be somewhere in the low 20's. She is a girl so she should not be too bulky.
@Lifeatthesharpend No, just find her favorite food and let her eat it any time, this will increase the hugeosity factor in no time. kinda like feeding dynamite to a fighting dog, And you could also get a small dog that she can fight with, kinda like half speed sparring, this will make her more insane.
Quick question. I'd love to own a Savannah some day, but I've heard the F1's can be pretty aggressive toward strangers. Is this true and if so, how do you deal with going away? Thanks :)
@bubblegumbum I have 2 F1's both pretty sweet compared to other F1's and what I have heard. Ruby is pretty friendly right from the start with strangers anyone can pick her up or pet her. she may growl or hiss to complain but that is it. Moja is scared of strangers for a bit but you can bribe her with food or treats, after that she is OK. The only time I would be worried is if she had kittens and stranger tried to pick up a young kitten that was hers, then all hell breaks loose.
@bubblegumbum You could get an F5 which if I understand it correctly are totally like domestic in behavior. Much cheaper too. I absolutely adore how these guys look, but I think if I were to get one, I'd go for an F5. I think the video should've gone further and showed F5s, F6s and SBT savannahs.
Given that most dogs I know pay only sporadic attention to their owners I think it's fair to conclude that most cat owners are similar to dog owners i.e. most of us like a pet with some independence in them. ;-)
I really appreciate your effort responding to Big Cat rescue. I have tried to reason with them but it's just a waste of time unfortunately. They speak from an ideological perspective, and use generalizations, assumptions, falsehoods etc... to try and sway public opinion w/o actually knowing these wonderful cats.
I have an F2 and he's the best cat I've ever had. He is a lot of work sometimes. Talk about active and in your face. But I wouldn't trade him for anything.
I still think exotics such at wild cat hybrids is inappropriate.....considering the mixing of the two...I don't think banning them is the key, but so many people are unprepared for the expense and special care to provide for their pet Savanna or Serval and end up letting them loose (like the three legged one they rescued). I have been scratched and bitten by domestic cats (got one nice scar) and don't want to imagine getting bitten/scratch by a hybrid. Save a life, rescue a pound kitty! =)
@equarg I don't own savannahs, and my cat is a regular kitty from a shelter, and I don't see a problem with hybrids. First, hybridization happens in nature e.g. European wildcats and Indian wildcats do interbreed with domestics. Second, from what I read (let experts correct me if I am wrong), only F1s and F2s are big, other generations are just like domestic cats. Third, people who buy F1s are those who otherwise would've bought a serval; those who want a domestic cat go for an F5s, IMHO.
@vlvl21 They can be affectionate and will follow you around also come when called. That is not true all the time and for all Savannahs. I normally do not say they are like dogs. I have successfully clicker trained a couple of cats. I do have one F5 boy that is leash trained to go on long hikes. He has been on a couple of 5 to 6 mile hikes. Starbuck is allowed to run around outside with me and will normally follow me around the yard and will come running when I call him.
Since Proctor and Gamble has bought out the Iams line, they have improved it, HOWEVER, the main ingrediant in the food is still Corn, which is undigestable. Also, the protien level is low. Cats, (Especially yours I would imagine) are carnivores, not omnivores. For the price as a bag of Eukanuba, you can get a higher percentage of protien. I beg you to check out Evo by Innova. With these kitties that you love and want the best for, I would opt for a grain free diet. I do it for my tabby.
@trubl77 Thanks for the input this is good information. As far as the kibble goes I have switched over to Wellness CORE. but I will mainly feed Ground whole chicken with gizzards, beef hearts and chicken necks added The RAW is ground and mixed then frozen in quart bags for a daily use. They can have what ever they want but having them used to dry food allows me to go away for the weekend and is easier for someone to watch them since they do not need to mess with the RAW food.
I think these cats are beautiful and they certainly are domestic, it might take a while (generations of being with humans) but I can see them becoming quite a common cat in the future, looks like something the Egyptians would've loved! They seem very entertaining and quite a handful though. However what's the difference between a big cat and a dog? I mean dogs are domestic, just because these cats are a bit bigger the size of a dog almost doesn't mean they're monsters I hate people that judge.
Omg these cats are beautiful. I've always been a cat lover but was unaware of this type of cat. They seem so alert and attentive. They seem to interact with humans in a much more "knowing" and aware way than your typical tabby or something. Maybe it just seems that way to me, but that's my general impression from videos. I think it's adorable how they keep gently pawing at your hand for a kibble lol.
lifeatthesharpend have you thought of using those chinese mutated cats who are growing wings in the sichuan province and breed the normal cats out creating eventually cats with usable wings......I know its a bit out there, but think about it
I think it good that your standing up and speaking out, I mean its just not right for Big Cat Recuse to judge these cats. For generation cat breeders have wanted to breed bigger cats, but the genetic didn't allow for such. But with the serval blood in the mix, breeding for a bigger cat may actually be possible! Are savannah's smarter than the average cat, and do they frighten easy like a lot of cats? Jus curious? I believe Savannahs could open a lot of doors in the pet cat relm.
your animals are beautifull. I myself have 3 domestic cats I will be honest my finances don't stretch to having a savannah or a bengal. I would love to have one. but they need time and care more so than my moggies who are quite happy with their 22 hour sleep patern I hardly see them. I enjoyed your video thanks for sharing
@buubaby you know that if you get an F5 or similar generation they will be the size of a normal cat but should retain some or much of the Savannah look. Apollo is a great cat loving and goes on hikes with me. You can get the lower % generation cats for $1000 to $2000 depending on looks and sex.
@racinheat yes that is my point as well you can not believe everything you read or hear from the internet and including BCR. Do your research. I have talked to some of people involved and I know that they have raised some of the animals.
@racinheat I would have to say dig in and do some research. Some of the cats there are not rescues and some were bred there and raised there. There is information out there about them. I think thing that Rexano may have some just google rexano exotics org. Try find out what happened to her husband. There are theories involving tigers.
@MinsterRogers I find that they shed about the same as a regular SHORT hair domestic cat. Far less than a long haired cat. As far as the cost, how much time do you have? .... there are a lot of variables that goes into pricing the cat. There is generation, sex, color, spotting and breed line. 50% F1's can range from $8000 to $10000 where F6's can be $1000 - $2000 sometimes less.
Cats are CARNIVORES . They are supposed to eat raw meat., NOT that smelly CRAPOLA that is jokingly called CAT FOOD.I am a total cat person but I would not feed that rubbish to a DOG and they eat ANYTHING and then BARF on the carpet from stuffing until the food is gone no matter how much was given at one time. Then they POOP on your new carpet. CATS use their potty box.
I have a very fussy f3boy who up until recently ate wet cat food aswell as raw white fish raw chicken & an occasional prawn his brother has just died just missing his 2nd birthday he was eating fine until a couple of weeks later so it must be late mourning but now he is not eating alot maybe twice aday but this is not alot as he is still growing and he is only eating fish which is not enough for his diet any ideas on what i can give him? plse contact me on tizdesh@hotmail.com many thanks Simon
@CryptsDay , I normally suggest either getting experience with a wild cat breed or getting an F2 first. Volunteering at a small wild cat sanctuary can help you. F1's can be a joy and they can be a challenge as well esp if you have other pets. Not all F1's are as nice as mine and not all F1's have the best litter box habits. You should know what you are getting into first do your research so you can make a well informed choice on your Savannah pet. L
@thisgame2 Thank you, you should check out my video of Ruby jumping 8 feet. She is 7 months old in the video and is a F1. She is the largest that I have and is also one of the sweetest young adult / old kittens ever. L
STOP feeding low quality food. Do some research and you'll discover that Eukanuba is unhealthy. Your cats will thrive on Wellness and EVO. However, the raw diet will be best for your exotic cats. But if you DO decide to go with the raw diet then you MUST do it right. A balanced raw diet will contain 80% muscle meat, 10% bones, 5% liver and 5% other organs. Or try the whole prey model and you won't have to deal with measurements. You can't just throw a piece of meat and expect them to thrive.
@Lifeatthesharpend Maybe I misunderstood you, but I think you said that you would give your cat a piece of raw steak. Raw meat is home to all kinds of parasitic nematodes that could damage or even kill your animal, regardless of it's otherwise superior nutritional value.
Even if the meat comes from a good source, it's nearly impossible to tell if the animal had a parasitic infection or not as some are asymptomatic.
BTW Eukanuba cat food is definitely NOT high quality. You have beautiful savannah cats who deserve a raw meat/bone/organ diet. If you can't supply a homemade raw, balanced diet then please only stick with HIGH, premium quality canned food. Science Diet, Eukanuba, Purina, Nutro Max, etc. are all full of unhealthy fillers and artificial flavors. If you want to feed the processed canned food then go with Wellness, EVO, Solid Gold, Merricks, etc.
If you have a smaller apartment you may want to look at the lower % generations like a F5 or F6. There are several catteries that are producing some nice looking kitties
The males are not fertile until they are F5 or F6 or even F7. It's hit and miss at F5. Your only choices are breeding an F1 female to an F5 or later or an out cross like a mau or bengal
you should look at some of my "what is for breadfast" videos. I do believe they eat well. Yes Seyah is a food hound and will pretty much do anything for food. Seyah is clicker trained and there is a video of some of the tricks he knows. My latest funny video with him in it is "wild african cat"
I would also like to know what requirements an animal has to have to be called "domestic". If you think rationally, every animal in this world had to be "wild" at some point. Servals have been pets for 1000's of years and some of them even considered royalty pets, even burried with there royalty owners sometimes. Id like to speak with someone at Big Cat Rescue and give them a piece of my mind.
@BrandonPumel I think they consider F5 and after domestic. I am no expert though, just a cat lover. BTW, some wildcat species e.g. European Wildcat mate freely with domestic cats in nature (I "met" European wildcats up close and personal when I was a child, and it was an unpleasant albeit educational encounter; I think they are far nastier than servals). I read many ferals in Scottland have Scottish Wildcat blood.
Big Cat Rescue is a complete joke. I would bet that all that money that people donate to "keep the sactuary running" is probably going straight to peoples paychecks.
Obviously, crapsack doesn't know what he's talking about. He needs to stop worrying about these "wild" (ha-ha) animals and start concentrating on his grammar skills. Or lack thereof.
I have several Savannahs, from F1s to F4 Crapsack is clueless. The USDA says these are domestic animals. Mine certainly act like domestics. I also own a Serval and while not a pet, he is a long ways from being a mean agressive animal. They are flight rather than fight animals and there is no documentation of a Serval attack on a human. They would much rather run away. Savannahs are wonderful pets!
I own four Savannah's, ranging from an F2, up to F6.
crapsack47 is a little off course, or un-educated. You can view my user name, and see the video's of my supposedly "wild" cats.
I think you might be confusing a Serval, with a Savannah. Savannah's are domestic cats...period!!! They are very loving, and affectionate. These cat's don't just "snap", and become "psycho" kitty.
They do have a lot of energy. But, they are pets, and mine love being owned by me, just ask them.
No matter what this guy says it un natuaral. I dont know why people need these WILD cats when there are tons of cats that need to be adopted. Not special bread. Also this guy is a idiot. You dont feed cats from hand let alone a wild cat. If you do that with wild cat they will always be looking for the treats. They are going to hiss at your hand and bite for it when you dont have it. I can already see signs of that. So, why would you want a half wild cat when there are tons of cats that need you
The cats you own are half wild if not more. These cats should not be pets and in there minds they arent. In there minds your just a guy who feeds you and have no compasion for you. These cats can snap at any moment. Whether they are trained or not. My uncle had to give away one because it just snapped and attacked him one day, but his other savanah is perfectly fine. You can't train these cats its there choice. THEY ARE WILD! THUS A WILD ANIMAL!
So now you are in their minds are you, you can read their minds? So your only exposure to Savannahs is your Uncle? Well, I had a Uncle who that had a Collie, Well, he snapped and bit him. So what does that say about your theory now? You do not know what you are talking about. I have had my Savannah for over 6 years and I have never had a problem with any of them.
When our neighbor's black lab gets loose, it aggressively charges at our neighbors until someone has to call animal control if they want to leave their house (not sure why they are still allowed to own it). Obviously, black labs are all wild and dangerous animals.
Quick question for you..if a human is born into poverty, and never experience the riches that some do, do they ever know the difference livin in poverty and living in luxury? The same goes for animals. If a Serval never experiences the wild, it doesn't know there even is a wild safari out there..yes, all animals have aggressive tendencies, not just wild and you should know how to avoid those situations.
That is pretty much how Savannahs are made. Someone from birth puts a Serval 3-4 day old kitten on a domestic mother or bottle feeds it and is raised with other domestic queens. It will have wild cat traits but it will think that the other are siblings. That does not always work but from my understanding the successful breeders of F1's do something like this.
Dude no matter what its a wild animal. It was never meant to be domesticated and is still born with the instincts of a wild anima and guess what that is, spray every and mark your scent and claw at stuff. You don't even know if this animal will like you. The fact is even if the cat was born into a house hold cat its still an animal that is meant to be in the wild. Do you think servals are naturaul. Do you think that servals naturally want to mate with a house cat?
Guess what, dogs and cats were wild animals at one point also. So if you know so much about this, what does it take to classify an animal as domestic? Because dogs and cats haven't always been domestic you know, and i hear about more dog attacks every year than wild animal attacks..maybe we should ban dogs from being bought as pets hahaa
btw. I just rescued a Ferral cat had him neutered and kept him for a week while he healed, then released him. He was by far the most dangerous cat that I have ever been with and he was a tabby domestic cat with a tuxedo coat. I would take my hybrids anyday over a cat like that.
Are you talking from experience, first hand knowledge, or hear say or assumption? Have you ever been around a Savannah?
Also, why do you have to insult people to make a point? When people insult or call people names in a debate, I see it as a deflection tactic as to they really have know knowledge of what they are talking about.
I wonder if crapsack thinks dogs and horses are wild and dangerous animals too. They injure and kill more people per year than all exotic pets combined.
Sad that animal rights activists have brain-washed so many people into believing any animal that hasn't been bred in captivity for 5000+ years is going to randomly snap and maul you.

It's a vanity pet. I'd rather go to the pound and save a cat from being put to sleep than have a wild animal forced to breed with a domestic just so I can look fancy with my long-limbed pet. Why yes I paid $3000 for my cat, aren't you jealous? :P
Alysaria 3 months ago
@Alysaria There are many different sides to look at things. You can see this cat as a venity pet, but then wouldn't you say the same for all the pure breed dogs out there? To get different colors and varities did they have to "force" then them breed with each other? I have volunteered at many pounds before. The cats are very different from the ones grown up in a good home. Some are very nice, other will never fully trust you. They never tell you the full story when your adopting.
spritedrin 2 months ago
@spritedrin Do you want a pet that will never love you or would you go through with it just to make yourself feel better, like your doing something right?
spritedrin 2 months ago
@spritedrin I have and do make the same claim of pure bred animals. There are enough animals put down every year without breeding more just because they look cool. I wasn't arguing personality, and anyone can be misleading... I know the Humane Society where I live is straight forward. Diet, allergies, behavioral issues, whether they're ok with other animals or kids is all written out on the animal's sheet and hanging in full view. They even mention if it's been adopted and returned and why.
Alysaria 2 months ago
@Alysaria So? Some people want a certain type of pet. Sometimes that pet happens to be an exotic animal, or an expensive one. That doesn't mean they are waving it around like a price tag, lots of people really like the animals and want to give them a good home.
marler3 2 months ago
@marler3 But that animal would not exist if not for the market...and what happens to the serval when it's too old to breed?
Alysaria 2 months ago
@Alysaria Pure-bred dogs wouldn't exist if it weren't for that market, either. Following that logic, no one should have pets. As for what happens when the serval is too old to breed... what exactly does that mean? Does that mean that their owners just put them down or get rid of them? Once again, it really is not fair to classify all owners of exotic pets to be irresponsible, just because there are some who are. I know plenty of dog owners who are irresponsible too.
marler3 2 months ago
@marler3 The thing is, domesticated dogs don't exist in the wild. They have had thousands of years to be bred into something that barely resembles a wild animal. They are not bred with wolves and other wild animals to produce something half wild....and they certainly aren't bred with something endangered. (Maybe some are, but they aren't as prevalent as with cats). My major issue is that there are more half-breed wild animals in captivity than their are wild counterparts...
Alysaria 2 months ago
@marler3 And I sincerely doubt a wild animal/liability is going to be kept around when it can't turn a profit anymore for a breeder who is only interested in making money.
Alysaria 2 months ago
@marler3 Totally agree I have 2 cats & the love they give me is something money can't buy it's simply priceless, I love the Savannah for it's wild looks & it's Intelligent & friendly nature & It's something that I wouldn't flash around & treat like a novelty. To me a Savannah would be a fantastic friend like my 2 cats are now I work from home so I'd love to dedicate my time to owning a Savannah & giving the love & friendship it deserves
casperblackcat1975 2 weeks ago

I bet the hybridization had happened naturally.
randerdk 6 months ago
@randerdk Well said I'm looking at even sponsoring a couple of Cats from BCR because I think the work they do is fantastic but In terms of the hybrid cat issue I do not agree, I've read so many positive stories about the Savannah they are a miss understood breed even here In Australia the anti cat lobby who are nothing but lying scumbags have made this breed out to be a major danger to Australia when it's further from the truth. The Savannah has a rightful place In Australia.

what's an F1, F2 and those things. I don't really get it.

Shutite 7 months ago
To continue, I'm all for potential pet owners to try to find a pet at the local animal shelter, as BCR suggests. But if you must have a certain breed, find a responsible breeder to find out about special needs certain breeds have. Consider the advice current owners may give you.As with everything, don't just listen to one side of the story. You'll make a more informed decision that way. Thanks, @lifeatthesharpend for this informative video, as well as part 2.
TNJimSK 7 months ago
My big problem with BCR was with a comment they made to one of their videos. Can't find it now, it may be a vid they closed comments on. They attempted to paint savannah breeders with the broad brush of "puppy mill". I'm aware irresponsible breeders of cats and dogs like that exist, but I do not buy this broad brush approach. BCR does a good service, but they also have an agenda that leaves out a great deal of facts.Responsible breeders will make potential owners aware of needs savannahs have.
TNJimSK 7 months ago
How can you rescue these cats? Do you have to have a license? I feel so bad for them, I have had dogs all my life and I know how an animal attaches to a person, wish people would think about their decisions..they bought this animal..care for it.

Thanks for this video! There were a lot of things I disagreed with in BCR's Savannah cat video, too. I've seen many who own (NOT owned! Just because of a few bad apples, don't take something so special away from the good ones. ;-)

Great video. I like how you describe everything. People often over emphasize the cat's wildness and how difficult it is to handle & raise, instead of the obligation for love and care we take for granted with 'domestic' animals. Thank you for posting this!

Are they less tolerable to being handled than say your regular house cat ?
aky19832001 11 months ago

Oddly enough I work with large German Shephards all day and yet cats still intrigue.
aky19832001 11 months ago
Its basically like having a mini tiger? same temperament and prey drive from my understanding and research.
aky19832001 11 months ago
@aky19832001 Not sure what you are talking about, I have never been with a tiger. Do you mean a Serval? or Savannah? A Savannah is a domestic cat. I have a bunch of them that sleep with me and share the house with me. They eat cat food and purr is that what you mean? I never thought that tiger did that.
Lifeatthesharpend 11 months ago
@Lifeatthesharpend How are their temperaments the F1 vs F2 vs F3? Which ones are calmer etc? Do they ever just cuddle and lay by you? Are the F3s more affectionate/ calmer? Are F3s better for a 2 bedroom condominium? Thanks so much!!
freddyphredphred 5 months ago
@freddyphredphred Well aside the fact that I recently found out a great deal of servals, male and female, will spray whether they are fixed or not; THIS is the best explanation of Savannah cats from F0 (pure Serval) - F7 Savannah: savannahs.webs.com/f1vsf2vsf3vsf4.htm
Wyfbane 4 months ago
@aky19832001 Not even a full serval has the same temperament as a tiger, not even close. I would really suggest that you don't research online for this stuff (that is, if you were researching online) because the information that you'll find about big cats is really inaccurate. I have experience with big cats, servals are wild cats, but nothing like tigers.

Hello thankyou for the video . But one question can you mix a serval with a bengal?. Do you get a ashera then??
jockim100 1 year ago
@jockim100 I'm not exactly sure what they are claiming an Ashera is. From my understanding early Savannahs were Servals crossed with Bengals. Now days they use other outcrosses and commonly using lower % Savannahs as well.

savannahs pwn regular cats XD
KeshaIsHot808 1 year ago
If they are out-crossed to a Bengal then they are not getting 100% domestic cat from that side, since Bengals come from Asian Leopard cats. So you are actually introducing two exotic cat species with some domestic thrown in there.
Atochabsh 1 year ago
Lifeatthesharpend 1 year ago
whether a cat is going to be aggressive or not really depends on the temperament of the animal itself and not necessarily breed or specie. Look at all the lions that Kevin Richardson handles: one could say that they are "tame" because of the way they interact with him. But tame or not, a lion can still kill you even accidentally.

@tickyul well I suppose I'll let you know what happens since they do sleep with me and it has been 3 years since the video was made. L
Lifeatthesharpend 1 year ago
@Lifeatthesharpend Haha, you are lucky I guess. How much do these cats cost? I love cats, but, this huge kitties would be a little scary, cats in general are nuts so you must have to really keep looking over your shoulder. Do you walk that beast on a leash, I hear they really like that.
tickyul 1 year ago
@tickyul some are expensive some are not. Think of a volume dial. F1 is the loudest most wild and largest cat and F7 the smallest most domestic cat you can get. The F7 is really just a domestic with spots and large ears and short tail , cost about the same as any pure breed show quality cat does. F1 are extremely expensive and is only for someone that is prepared to take care of a wild cat or in this case a half wild cat.
Lifeatthesharpend 1 year ago
@tickyul you need to look as Seyah's last 2 videos "Wild African Cat (Seyah the Savannah)" and "Seyah and His Ball" those 2 videos will give you and idea of what he is like at home and when I let him out for a walk around the yard with me. Starbuck is pretty much the same way. Plus they both come normally when I call them if they are not with me on the property.
Lifeatthesharpend 1 year ago
@Lifeatthesharpend And when these huge cats decide to play rough with you...uh, what do you do....run to a designated safe room....LOL. The cost to feed these beasts must be quite a bit, do you ever let them hunt live food, that would be neat. So you are saying the MORE insane and wild the cat...the more it costs...shouldn't it be the other way around? How do these huge, meat eating type cats do with other...uh, NORMAL cats...dogs?? I could easily see this cat getting carried away and...yikers.
tickyul 1 year ago
@tickyul I have had them for so long, to me they act just like normal cats do. I have everything from F1 (the father is a serval) down to F7 ( 7 gens removed from wild blood ) In some cases. the more domestic cats (F7's) can be more unpredictable than the others. In the new place I let Sayah and Starbuck run the yard when I'm home. Seyah has become the big lizard hunter. Starbuck tries to catch rabbits but never has gotten one. They are both my big babies and always come when I call them.
Lifeatthesharpend 1 year ago
@Lifeatthesharpend I saw a guy walking a huge cat, it must have been a Serval. The cat was huge (for a domestic cat) and looked like it was really enjoying being walked on a leash. It kinda reminded me of a pitbull being walked because the cat was pulling the guy walking him. Walking a cat like that must be hard, you would get stopped every ten feet by people wanting to ask questions and pet (maybe?) it.
tickyul 1 year ago
@tickyul I find that cats in general are scared of new situations. For a cat to be out on a leash it would need to be very used to it and normally started out as a kitten. When I walk Apollo he will be excited at the beginning of the walk and walk in front of me but after a while he will trail and it depends on if he is comfortable where he is. He is a pretty small cat also, only about 10lbs
Lifeatthesharpend 1 year ago
@Lifeatthesharpend Ten pounds huh? If I was to get one of these cats I would want more of a hugeosity factor, make it more like owning a mountain lion or some other wild cat. Do you feed this cat a special diet? I know everyone likes a big, fat kitty, kinda easy with the junk catfood out there now. You should let him catch and devour rats or bunnies (just joking.......kinda.).
tickyul 1 year ago
@tickyul Well , I dont have any "monster big cats" Seyah is about 18 lbs now, Starbuck is about 14 and Apollo is about 10 -11 lbs. My largest is Ruby she is 18.5 lbs. she is only 11 months old and is a sweet kitten. I have had her to petco and homedepot before. I feed wellness core and RAW food to anyone who wants it. The RAW is just ground chicken and some additives. I let Seyah run around the property when I'm working the yard, and he has not caught anything yet, except lizzards. L
Lifeatthesharpend 1 year ago
@Lifeatthesharpend 18.5 lbs, that is pretty big, if you powerfeed her maybe she will get up to 25 lbs and she can go hunting the neighborhood dogs.
tickyul 1 year ago
@tickyul I'm not sure what power feeding her is, but Savannahs are suppose to be tall and slender. They grow until they are just over 2 years old so she has plenty of time left, she is only 12 months old right now. My guess is that she will be somewhere in the low 20's. She is a girl so she should not be too bulky.
Lifeatthesharpend 1 year ago
@Lifeatthesharpend No, just find her favorite food and let her eat it any time, this will increase the hugeosity factor in no time. kinda like feeding dynamite to a fighting dog, And you could also get a small dog that she can fight with, kinda like half speed sparring, this will make her more insane.
tickyul 1 year ago
Quick question. I'd love to own a Savannah some day, but I've heard the F1's can be pretty aggressive toward strangers. Is this true and if so, how do you deal with going away? Thanks :)
bubblegumbum 1 year ago
@bubblegumbum I have 2 F1's both pretty sweet compared to other F1's and what I have heard. Ruby is pretty friendly right from the start with strangers anyone can pick her up or pet her. she may growl or hiss to complain but that is it. Moja is scared of strangers for a bit but you can bribe her with food or treats, after that she is OK. The only time I would be worried is if she had kittens and stranger tried to pick up a young kitten that was hers, then all hell breaks loose.
Lifeatthesharpend 1 year ago
@bubblegumbum you could also get a F2 instead
Lifeatthesharpend 1 year ago
@bubblegumbum You could get an F5 which if I understand it correctly are totally like domestic in behavior. Much cheaper too. I absolutely adore how these guys look, but I think if I were to get one, I'd go for an F5. I think the video should've gone further and showed F5s, F6s and SBT savannahs.

equarg 1 year ago
@equarg I don't own savannahs, and my cat is a regular kitty from a shelter, and I don't see a problem with hybrids. First, hybridization happens in nature e.g. European wildcats and Indian wildcats do interbreed with domestics. Second, from what I read (let experts correct me if I am wrong), only F1s and F2s are big, other generations are just like domestic cats. Third, people who buy F1s are those who otherwise would've bought a serval; those who want a domestic cat go for an F5s, IMHO.

So is it true that they almost act like dogs? In other words, are they very affectionate...
vlvl21 1 year ago

I enjoyed your video thanks for sharing
buubaby 1 year ago

There are theories involving tigers.

do savannah cats shed as much as regular domestic cats? or they dont shed as much?
thanks
how much does one cost on average?
MinsterRogers 1 year ago

You have beautiful cats :) After I graduate from Vet school I want an F1 .. would you suggest any good breeders?
CryptsDay 1 year ago
@CryptsDay , I normally suggest either getting experience with a wild cat breed or getting an F2 first. Volunteering at a small wild cat sanctuary can help you. F1's can be a joy and they can be a challenge as well esp if you have other pets. Not all F1's are as nice as mine and not all F1's have the best litter box habits. You should know what you are getting into first do your research so you can make a well informed choice on your Savannah pet.

Spargelgesicht 1 year ago
BTW Eukanuba cat food is definitely NOT high quality. You have beautiful savannah cats who deserve a raw meat/bone/organ diet. If you can't supply a homemade raw, balanced diet then please only stick with HIGH, premium quality canned food. Science Diet, Eukanuba, Purina, Nutro Max, etc. are all full of unhealthy fillers and artificial flavors. If you want to feed the processed canned food then go with Wellness, EVO, Solid Gold, Merricks, etc.

So it's not a good idea to get one in an apartment? I have VERY limited space in my apartment but I really want one.
ayesha080 2 years ago
If you have a smaller apartment you may want to look at the lower % generations like a F5 or F6. There are several catteries that are producing some nice looking kitties
Lifeatthesharpend 2 years ago
So what about breeding 2 F1s? That would make another f1, right? The offspring would be 50% still.
MsExoticBliss 2 years ago
The males are not fertile until they are F5 or F6 or even F7. It's hit and miss at F5. Your only choices are breeding an F1 female to an F5 or later or an out cross like a mau or bengal

you should look at some of my "what is for breadfast" videos. I do believe they eat well. Yes Seyah is a food hound and will pretty much do anything for food. Seyah is clicker trained and there is a video of some of the tricks he knows. My latest funny video with him in it is "wild african cat"
Lifeatthesharpend 2 years ago
I would also like to know what requirements an animal has to have to be called "domestic". If you think rationally, every animal in this world had to be "wild" at some point. Servals have been pets for 1000's of years and some of them even considered royalty pets, even burried with there royalty owners sometimes. Id like to speak with someone at Big Cat Rescue and give them a piece of my mind.
BrandonPumel 2 years ago 9

Or lack thereof.
frostjana 2 years ago
I have several Savannahs, from F1s to F4 Crapsack is clueless. The USDA says these are domestic animals. Mine certainly act like domestics. I also own a Serval and while not a pet, he is a long ways from being a mean agressive animal. They are flight rather than fight animals and there is no documentation of a Serval attack on a human. They would much rather run away. Savannahs are wonderful pets!
HereKitty0120 2 years ago
I own four Savannah's, ranging from an F2, up to F6.
crapsack47 is a little off course, or un-educated. You can view my user name, and see the video's of my supposedly "wild" cats.
I think you might be confusing a Serval, with a Savannah. Savannah's are domestic cats...period!!! They are very loving, and affectionate. These cat's don't just "snap", and become "psycho" kitty.
They do have a lot of energy. But, they are pets, and mine love being owned by me, just ask them.
iflyems62 2 years ago
No matter what this guy says it un natuaral. I dont know why people need these WILD cats when there are tons of cats that need to be adopted. Not special bread. Also this guy is a idiot. You dont feed cats from hand let alone a wild cat. If you do that with wild cat they will always be looking for the treats. They are going to hiss at your hand and bite for it when you dont have it. I can already see signs of that. So, why would you want a half wild cat when there are tons of cats that need you
crapsack47 2 years ago
I'm not sure what you are talking about. I don't have any wild cats. these guys are my pets and live in the house with me and sleep with me.
Lifeatthesharpend 2 years ago
The cats you own are half wild if not more. These cats should not be pets and in there minds they arent. In there minds your just a guy who feeds you and have no compasion for you. These cats can snap at any moment. Whether they are trained or not. My uncle had to give away one because it just snapped and attacked him one day, but his other savanah is perfectly fine. You can't train these cats its there choice. THEY ARE WILD! THUS A WILD ANIMAL!
crapsack47 2 years ago
@crapsack47

BrandonPumel 2 years ago 3
That is pretty much how Savannahs are made. Someone from birth puts a Serval 3-4 day old kitten on a domestic mother or bottle feeds it and is raised with other domestic queens. It will have wild cat traits but it will think that the other are siblings. That does not always work but from my understanding the successful breeders of F1's do something like this.
Lifeatthesharpend 2 years ago
Dude no matter what its a wild animal. It was never meant to be domesticated and is still born with the instincts of a wild anima and guess what that is, spray every and mark your scent and claw at stuff. You don't even know if this animal will like you. The fact is even if the cat was born into a house hold cat its still an animal that is meant to be in the wild. Do you think servals are naturaul. Do you think that servals naturally want to mate with a house cat?
crapsack47 2 years ago
Guess what, dogs and cats were wild animals at one point also. So if you know so much about this, what does it take to classify an animal as domestic? Because dogs and cats haven't always been domestic you know, and i hear about more dog attacks every year than wild animal attacks..maybe we should ban dogs from being bought as pets hahaa
BrandonPumel 2 years ago 4
house hold cats started out the same way.....
WE started out the same way.

@crapsack47
You know that domestic cats also spray, scent mark and scratch too, right?
Fleefles 1 year ago
btw. I just rescued a Ferral cat had him neutered and kept him for a week while he healed, then released him. He was by far the most dangerous cat that I have ever been with and he was a tabby domestic cat with a tuxedo coat. I would take my hybrids anyday over a cat like that.
Lifeatthesharpend 2 years ago
@crapsack47
Are you talking from experience, first hand knowledge, or hear say or assumption? Have you ever been around a Savannah?
Also, why do you have to insult people to make a point? When people insult or call people names in a debate, I see it as a deflection tactic as to they really have know knowledge of what they are talking about.
ricsydiva 2 years ago
@Ricsydiva
Yes I have first hand experiance. My uncle owns a F1 and F4.
crapsack47 2 years ago
I wonder if crapsack thinks dogs and horses are wild and dangerous animals too. They injure and kill more people per year than all exotic pets combined.
Sad that animal rights activists have brain-washed so many people into believing any animal that hasn't been bred in captivity for 5000+ years is going to randomly snap and maul you.
