That was outstanding. I have never seen or heard this before. I have heard the miles davis version with no words. She fills in the words. She is such a beautiful soul.
What a talented, beautiful, classy lady! I have always thought that Lena Horne's phrasing was superb. Instrumentalists, not just singers, could learn a lot by listening to her recordings. Does anyone know the name of the guitarist who backs Ms. Horne on the first chorus?
RIP Lena... You were of a generation where in order to make you had to have a voice, dignity, respect, class, and some kind talent other than a body or a gimmicky stage act.
Timeless perfection. I love the expressions she makes, like she's really feeling the longing and hope the song conveys. RIP Lena Horne. You will be missed.
ABSOLUTELY! Lena is COMPLETELY in the moment. A true original...they all copied her....everyone wanted to know what was going on in her head while she sang....the mark of a true artist-her internal movie was always running while she sang-laying her heart and soul bare for us to see and project our feelings and emotions onto-she is more like Garland than anyone else...both brilliant-in one hundred years-those 2 will still be counted among the best the world has ever encountered
@lenahorneclub Agreed... Garland was very about the performance... I think the most internal/truthful I ever heard her was when she sang "What do I do?" and "The Man That God Away." As far as internal singers there are very few... but you can definitely see the influence Lena had on Barbra Streisand.... every song for both of those women was like a new character. I adore adore adore this!!!!!
@lenahorneclub If anything I would compare Lenas execution to that of Barbra Streisand. They are both extremely internal, and it is obvious Barbras delivery was influenced by her. The songs are acted out.
In light of the recent biography of Lena, this number is especially poignant. The lady is in a rarified category all her own. What a voice, and what a face. She almost appears ready to cry at the very end here. Thank God for Lena Horne.
only select few people can do this today....just stand there and sing with such execution and passion......and beautiful and perfect tone....this right here is on point

That's quite a radical analysis of two and a half sentences.
Her (Lena's) technique is ok, but the intonation could have been better, her articulation is exaggerated ('how thrilling' and 'whisper') and the staring into the distance is a bit of a gimmick. And she changed the beautiful opening notes.
Lena's style was influenced by the style of pop singing of the day -- ever listen to Barbra Streisand exaggerations in the 1960s? That was the style. Also keep in mind that Lena's main gig was live & stage performing which may explain what might look gimmicky in front of a close TV camera.

My God! Lord Mercy is she UGGGGLY as hell. so boring slow sleepy voice. the package is not there all together. Too bad she was not givted by some beauty at least to match the show biz tittle.
My generation's so-called "Singers" should be FORCED to watch real ladies like Lena & Julie London in order to see what being sexy is really all about.
Completely gorgeous! Never heard this version and like it more than the later recorded one on "A New Album." We are so lucky to have and to have had Lena. Thank you for spreading around this glorious tribute.
Lovely version of this great song - Lena was beautiful and sang wonderfully - a real unique talent !

Disagree with the comparison with Garland -- Garland was all out there on the stage -- Lena was more internal.
