  • 1 John 4:20

20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

  • Oh, by the way, founded in 1851 in London, Reuters is the preeminent international news agency. I had to add this lest anyone suggest that it is a right-wing wacko news organization with some sort of bias against liberals or the left. Please note they used the term "illegal immigrants" as opposed to the nuanced "undocumented workers" ascribed by liberals.

  • Hispanic activists say illegal aliens are "oppressed people". Illegals are NOT oppressed! First, illegals earn about 4 - 6 times what they earn in Mexico. Also, illegals get: - free health care - free K-12 education for their anchor babies - free food stamps for their anchor babies - free federal welfare checks for their anchor babies - WIC (nutrional program for babies) - EIC (Earned Income Tax credits up to $4,200/year) - Low income housing subsidies Opressed?? Give me a break!!
  • Thou shalt tax (steal from) Peter to help (pay) Pablo is NOT in the Bible.

The leadership of the Catholic Church are giving corrupt regimes like Mexico a pass and put a guilt trip on the US taxpayer. They also don't seem to care about the deaths caused by illegal immigration or the threat of terrorism. Fortunately there are many Catholics who oppose this false compassion.

At least Angela admitted that illegals were a burden to the US.

  • Mehlman just won't give up. He keeps giving one lie after another. First the Catholic church doesn't help them in the US. She shot that down.

Not discouraged at being caught in a lie, he gives another. Immigrants taking jobs. You can't but admire his audacity.

  • RalphNelson - You're obviously an open borders supporter, otherwise you would not have posted the above - you're comments are so off base. Illegals DO take jobs, by the millions in fact, in construction, light manufacturing, and service industries, for starters. Americans WILL work these jobs, but rightfully expect a respectable living wage. Flooding the market with illegals depresses wages significantly, driving U.S. workers away from jobs they'd otherwise take.

  • Then, to add insult to injury, you have pro-illegal activists saying in effect "Look, they're taking jobs Americans don't want." Well, that's because the flood of illegals have caused wages to become so low. Repatriate the illegals, then employers will have to raise wages to meet marketplace conditions, and you won't have any trouble finding U.S. workers after the wages are corrected from this depression caused by massive illegal immigration. Not hard to figure out.

  • The number of jobs in the country is not fixed. The workforce has doubled over the past 50 years, and wages have risen right along with it. If there were a fixed number of jobs like the cells in your pointed head, then that wouldn't be possible.

In addition, to working a job, new entrants in the workforce also create jobs by consuming food, clothing, transportation, housing and other goods.

  • Ralph, you intrigue me... you love your economics side arguments but they always fail to acknowledge the reality that we live in a welfare state in many ways. Where is the limit of burden on the taxpayer. At what what point does the impact on the native citizens and taxpayers and legal immigrants become unacceptable? Your pushing out the growth curve economic arguments will never justify your overall, open border, socialistic belief system. Your other arguments are just blunlty false. Likebelow.

  • The fact that we live in a welfare state does not negate the fact that immigration has a minimal effect on unemployment and wages.

  • You are wrong. The starting wage for a painter is the same it was 20 years ago in dollars. You love stats....so what is the value of a dollar today compared to 20 years ago? I hate to think...50%? I haven't looked it up. Please explain that little detail you economic genius, while the costs of ALL goods and services have steadily risen. Your argument is misleading if not downright false.

  • Post hoc ergo propter hoc is a common fallacy.

  • The fact is that the skill premium (difference in wages of low-skilled and high skilled labor) has increased worldwide over the past decades in countries. It's easy for a hack to comment on the internet that it's the fault of immigration, but for those of us interested in uncovering the real causes and solutions to problems it takes a little more insight and intelligence than you have to offere.

  • Yes, very cute. As always you do not answer the question. Secondly, I never said it was the FAULT of immigration, did I? I do argue that it does exacerbate the widening of the skill premium in this country. If the widening disparity bothers you, we should be on the same side. And funny me..I am concerned about this country first and the rest of humanity second. That is the difference between us. Loyalties. Sound kind of full of yourself with your wikepedia sophistry. LOL Have a nice day......

  • Unable to address the content of my argument, he hurls insults.

  • "The fact that we live in a welfare state does not negate the fact that immigration has a minimal effect on unemployment and wages."

    Ralph,

Tell that to the 17,000 U.S. Tyson Foods workers who were systematically fired/replaced with illegal immigrants from Mexico who work for about $9/hour (about 1/2 the previous wage Tyson was paying the American workers).

Tell that to the thousands of U.S. construction workers who were replaced by cheap labor illegals. Tons more examples like this.

  • I doubt you have tons more examples. On almost any subject one can come up with a few examples. But to measure the overall effects takes more than just a few examples

  • Need more examples: hotel industry workers, restaurant workers including fast food, most of the trades, tons of factory workers, and a myriad of other service industry jobs, etc.

We have probably 20 million illegals in the USA. They are working here. In each case they are either outright taking an Americans's job since they'll work for less or else they are creating labor saturation which means too many workers for too few jobs, thus depressed wages.

  • And the estimate of the wage depression, as calculated by Prof Borjas, was miniscule, about 5 to 10%

  • you call 5-10% miniscule? wew!

  • Less than a buck an hour

  • a buck an hour? more like $2-$3 but even a dollar an hour is 40 dollars a week and $2,080 a year if that's not a lot of money to you please remit that sum to me.

  • It's not a lot of money. First of all, we're only talking about high school drop outs. 5% of $10 an hour is 50 cents. Second, numerous studies have shown that merely graduating from high school can increase one's earnings potential by as much as 40%.

Let's face it. To graduate high school in this country, all one needs to do is show up an breathe for a few hours a day. For someone who can't do that, immigration isn't their biggest problem.

  • i find your attitude and disturbing. and your characterizations telling.

  • AD HOMINEM

  • exactly. in the truest sense. if there had been any substance to your comment i would have replied to it.

  • Liberals who support illegal immigrants are unknowingly siding with greedy U.S. corporations. Why? Because illegal immigration is about one thing --> more corporate profits via lower labor costs.

WHO WINS? Greedy companies AND illegal workers (earning FAR more than in Mexico).

WHO LOSES? The U.S. labor class (U.S. proletariat) via job losses to illegal workers & depressed wages.

Thus 120 years of U.S. wage struggles fought for since the Haymarket Rebellion of 1886 are being undermined.

  • The effects of immigration over the past decade has had an adverse effect on wages of high school drop outs by less than ten 10%. Meanwhile merely graduating from high school (not too difficult in this country) results in a 40% increase in earnings potential.

If you're a high school drop out, then immigration isn't your biggest concern. Please. To graduate high school, you need to do little more than get out of bed. If you can't do that, then no wonder you have low earnings.

  • She would say ANYTHING to put a positive spin on this topic. She actually sounds desparate.
