The Pentium "M" series is underpowered. It was a good expiriment, but you.were probably better off with its original CPU. You could have tried overclock the celeron if it allows you to in bios.
I have an R40, runs like a dream. I have so called better and more powerful laptops, but this one is my favorite for screen quality and the feel of the keyboard, and It has performed flawlessly for every task I have thrown at it!
@D3adUMP No, you're quite right about that! lol! It's a really good laptop for it's particular level, but of course it has it's limits. I only run Ubuntu on mine so it's not getting it's resources swallowed up.
@errorkahun Why in gods name would you change a notebook processor?! Did you even reapply the thermal paste?! My god did you force the cpu into its socket?! Did you even know it would fit?! Do you even know if the cpu is compatible with the motherboard. God this is one of the most stupidest things I have ever seen?!
@AphamX: I did everything perfectly. (The tutorial and minimum of 20 IQ is needed :) With the old proc it works again.
"Why in gods name" rotfl. Have you ever heard there are difference in speeds between 1.4 and 1.86 ghz processors? :) The most stupid comment I've ever seen :P
Unfortunately, the chipset in this laptop doesn't support a Dual Core Pentium. Even though the earlier ones are available in the same socket format, they aren't compatible.
@Officer94 Uh, I didn't say that it was. I was referring to the comment "Does anyone know what is the fastest processor that I could install in a Thinkpad R40" and there were dual core pentium processors. Look at the Pentium D. It uses the same tech behind a Pentium M but it has two cores. Some of the P4 chipsets support the Pentium D but not this laptop. Read and do your research before making comments dude.
hello there. i have an ibm r40e and its hdd is dying so i bought another hdd but when i installed other hitachi 30gb hdd my troublemaker laptop is asking for a password. how can i do it? any help'd be appreciated.

Nice tutorial, unfortunately after changing the processor, the notebook doesn't start. I've changed an 1.4 ghz processor to a 1.86/2M/533 Intel M.
Texts on the proc:
RH80536 750
7549A969 SL7S9
1.86/2M/533
INTEL M (c) '04
Do you have any idea?

Thank you for the video!
Does anyone know what is the fastest processor that I could install in a Thinkpad R40?
According to a page on the Lenovo website, it's a Pentium 4, running at 2.4 gigahertz.
It also read: Types 2681, 2682, 2683, 2896. But I'm not familiar with those numbers.
Does anyone know if that's true? Beuhler, Beuhler, anyone?
