  • Very, very talented bassist!

  • guitar!

  • still a marvellous song

  • I'm a Generation Y-er, born in Dec 1983 - a fair few years after this song - and even I find it nostalgic. The 70s were totally awesome (or is that ace?). EASILY the best bit is when he says: "GUITAR!"

  • Got No1 the day i was born

  • travvelling through South America in 1984/85 we sung this song over and over again, what a marvellous song it was. Still I sing this song with joy.

  • One of the best solos ever performed.

  • gues what.. didnt got the ticket:( dangit santa why?

  • @BarfProductionz u still here too? :|

  • This song just does'nt quit, hello 1974. I think? I was stoned I barely remember? Who am I? I still love this!

  • Stevie ..heard he ended up in a wheel chair..can anyone debunk this as he was one of my male pop heros....

  • @singaporelan Apologies if someone has already answered this- but I saw him on Mastermind the other night and he was walking quite well but with the support of a walking stick.

  • Thumbs up if you're watching Steve on Mastermind:-)

  • A mil Km del mar :3

  • You've broken every code .....

  • this is, and as allways Been one of my fav songs of all time, i got through out of a pub for playing this over 20 times on the juke box, when it first came out, great times the 70s yea

  • Could anyone as hairy as DLT present a top tv programme like TOTP now?

  • ''Let's show the keyboard during the guitarsolo'' (-(

  • @beamerZ isnt really a guitar solo if the keyboardist is playing too :P

  • @TheRealDave it is Dave

  • also Steve can be heard on 5 live sport sometimes he's a big horse-racing fan

  • there was a few smart bands pre-punk who weren't playing prog/stadium rock this was one and the record a breath of fresh air at the time

  • What did Jimmy draw?

  • 106...Jack FM

  • ronnie i love you x

  • What I nice surprise seeing Jimmy Savile too.

  • VELVET GOLDMINE!

  • I still love this song after all these years. I saw The GranMarstonberries do a version of this in September - it was excellent!!

  • Absolutely a CLASSIC!

  • dear santa,

i would like a one way ticket to 70's please.

  • @BarfProductionz It was the decade when Rock and Pop really came of age. When music was written purely for art's sake and musicians were skilled intrumentalists that could evoke whatever moods and feelings they wanted. I miss those days.

  • @BarfProductionz ohhh me an all, i'll go back x

  • @BarfProductionz Thatcher coming up, bless you.

  • @BarfProductionz im coming with you !!!

  • Steve Harley plays live at The Duchess, York on Thursday 8th December.

  • Bass. Is. Beautiful.

  • 0:18 God knows what sort of madness had been scrawled on the paper

  • 1974, what a great year... having not even existed in any way or form...

  • Totally Original and way head of his time!

  • I watched the original on TV. It's still as good! Great feel-good song.

  • Another Roddick Stifler look alike ? Love the rebel!

  • full monty...

  • i do what you want .

  • Having watched the TV programme as it actually happened with a group of about 20 people, I can tell you that the universal opinion was that Steve Harley did not fluff his lines at all.....it was deliberate.....There was quite a controversy at the time with many bands on Top Of The Pops miming,,,,,Steve was keen to show he didn't mime...hence the deliberate mistake..also the long gaps in the song along with the exhortation half way through "Guitar" was just to show they were playing live!

  • @zIsebsmithIz That's a plausible explaination and one I hadn't thought of! It's cetainly the sort of thing SH would do though, thanks for making this point :)

  • @zIsebsmithIz Course its mimed neither acoustic is miked up and he isnt singing either

  • @zIsebsmithIz: The acoustic guitar sounds a bit different compared to the original studio version....if this was really live, my compliments ! TOTP studio had room for only 20 people back then ?....LOL

  • @MrSKINFLICK When I said I was watching it,,,,,it was on the telly and not in the studio...there was plenty of discussion going on as they were playing especially about whether they were miming as you can imagine.Somebody who knew somebody who knew SH had been tipped off and told us what to watch for! Wish it could have been a racehorse!

  • @zIsebsmithIz:

I got the impression now that it´s not live, the tongue-in-cheek grins tell it all + Steve has chewing gum in his mouth.....

  • @zIsebsmithIz Top of the Pops had a policy of mainly getting the band to mime and the singer(s) to sing live. This was a lot easier to mix. Some bands refused to mime, unfortunately this was not one of them, do you see any microphones on the drum kit? The guitar solo is visually out of time with what you hear.

  • @petehasplans I don't see any mikes on the drum kit and the sound quality at the time wasn't that great either..so what does that prove? means the mikes could be out of sight..as mentioned earlier ".Somebody who knew somebody who knew SH had been tipped off and told us what to watch for!".It wasn't an observation we made after the event....it was an observation planned before the song..didn't have access to video recorders in those days.Look at Steve's character..its the sort of thing he'do!

  • GRANDE,GRANDE,GRANDE!!!!!!!

    BIG,BIG,BIG!!!!!!!

  • a classic still enjoy listening to...

  • Could Steve be Owen Wilson's father???

  • I can see Dana Carvey doing a parody of these guys... a feel good song. :)

  • Love this song. I was born in the late 80's so don't usually listen to songs pre 1988. But this song is so great, I feel inspired to listen to more songs from 30-40 years ago.

  • 39 people have never smiled

how could you dislike this honestly its like not watching cartoons as a kid :S

  • Has anybody spotted Steve's messing up his words on V2 (1:28)? It should be "It's sust a test, a game for us to play, win or lose it's hard to smile". You can see the guys trying not to laugh in the background :) One of the best pop songs of all time though, fantastic!

  • @geespar1

Yeah and at 2:50 he sings "My faith in everything. Now I know what faith is (again!) and what it's worth". It's the second time he's sung that line which is why the guitarist and bassist are laughing!

  • @nickhirst999 You're absolutely right - bet they had a good laugh about it after the show!

  • @geespar1 You can see Steve roll his eyes at 01:50 to 01:53 - I think that's in response to the fact he couldn't remember his own lyrics. :)

  • @MJNSEIFER Yeh, hadn't noticed that, but I see it now! BTW, does anyone agree that the guitar solo is one of the best acoustic solos on any pop song?

  • @geespar1 yes ! yes! crisp, clean and full of feeling on top of a beautiful rythm!!!!

  • rip jimmy saville ..... a legend and a legend still living :)

  • Brilliant song.

    RIP Jimmy :)

  • One of the DJ's announcing this is Jimmy Saville who died today, 29/10/2011 Rip Sir Jimmy, you were a part of my youth, you are now re-united with the Duchess God bless.

  • brill :)

  • Top song, what a memory.

  • SWAGGER!

  • He reminds me of Paul Weller...

  • @TheMrMarilyn stupid smelly old nonce...the pair of you....this is real music 'ere.

  • As an American...never heard this song until I heard a Duran Duran cover in the Eighties. Brilliant pop song.

  • Loved this song by one of my teen idols

  • Hey there all, let's enjoy the good vibes these guys and dolls made all for us to enjoy... let's never forget all the countless others involved and behind the scenes too.. I can sure dig it.... My babe sure makes me smile.....

  • Why hasn't this got 20 million hits. Wheres the music gone, I ask you ?

  • TALENTED SEXY STEVE HARLEY SINGING THE SONG THAT POSITIVELY MOVES SOULS.

  • Love this. It stands the test of time. Everyone looks as though they are enjoying themselves. Guitar - priceless!

  • @BiffFrog

  • Steve Harley is the man !

  • Does exactly what it says on the tin makes ya smile!!

  • "Guitar"! 2:03 haha love the faces he makes to the camera. I wish music was still this good. I mean, nothing against the 'music' nowadays -if that's what you want to call it-, but music from 50's 60's 70's 80's and some 90's were just so damn rad. It will never be the same.

  • Great song!

  • One of the best songs of all time without a shadow of a doubt

  • Love this!

  • Christopher Walken on the drums at 3:25

    Great song

  • @TopseCretsable oh is that who it was ? I thought it was ur mother.

  • @TopseCretsable I SEE NO RESEMBLANCE WHATSOEVER.

  • Happiest Black man in the world

  • That song always makes me smile...

  • Music seemed a hell of a lot better in the 70's and 80's......what happened to good music?

  • Savile looks like Sonny Bono in this

  • just love this song

  • Thumbs up if you still listen to this in 2011!

  • @GeezerGameGuideZ no im watching in 1930

  • U forget how epic top of the pops could be lol

  • 1:15 lol

  • 1st boyfriend i had !!!played this song in london. good good memories

  • I wonder what Jimmy wrote on his pad that made DLT smile

  • @CreamedCheesed One can only imagine haha.. The mind boggles...

  • Got to love my homeland Britain for it's music

  • @BitOfSand : I'm not even British and love British music. A lot!!!

  • Gittar!

  • this song is so great that my having listened to it 132493754875845456 times (roughly) is merited..

  • Great music, lyrics and song...performance.

  • :L at the crowd - 1:00 the shittest mosh pit ever

  • @SmileAtTheMoon

I'm afraid mosh pits weren't quite a thing of TOTP and of artists like Cockney Rebel.

  • brilliant steve harley one of the greatest songs of all time introduced by one of the worst djs! can anyone remember his radio 1 quiz, snooker on the radio, what a knacker!

  • memories........aaaaah.......

  • Shame they have those asshole DJs isn't it? Thumbs up

  • @willnotallow dont beg it piss splash

  • a classic!!

  • You can't beat a good false ending....

  • 37 people need to come up and see me

  • One of the greatest rock´n´roll songs ever, applause for Harley + Cockney Rebel !

  • wtf man cant even wacth the video watched it five minutes ago work fine only getting audio the other videos work fine

  • great shows in Athens and Thessaloniki , cheers and thanks for the good times!

  • sexy

  • Somebody says this is great miming - but I'm pretty sure it's being sung LIVE, although the instruments are pre-recorded. TOTP rules in them days. The greatest thing is the way Mr Harley gets the words wrong in the second verse and then later sings "and know what faith is - AGAIN!" and makes all the other guys laugh.

  • @gustobelly yes lead voclas are live backing track and backing vocals are pre recorded

  • 37 people shouldn't exist!!!!

  • Geen jaar geleden was Steve Harley, geen haar anders dan toen ...in Leffinge!

    Straks in Poperinge!

    70-ties revival comes close now...

  • My dad's been to see him 28 times!

  • @friendofsgran:

Pete, get the message, you may have more than a million upload calls here on YT:

Steve Harley + Cockney Rebel sold at least thrice as much as you have call-ups for da silly channel.

GET DA LIFE - ENJOY IT or LEAVE IT !

Well sure - BLOCKED R FIRST here !

  • @MrSKINFLICK what are you talking about? I'm just saying my dad saw him live in concert 28 times

  • @friendofsgran so have i dad has good taste

  • @MrSKINFLICK and I never said I didn't like this song

  • @friendofsgran: okie dokie !

  • Brilliant!

  • great stuff !!!

  • instently dig this

  • you had to be in this age to appreciate this music

  • @waskelrabbit no u dont

  • @waskelrabbit I disagree. You still get people liking Beethoven and there's nobody on Earth who was alive when he was composing. A good song is a good song regardless. This has long been one of my favourite tunes but I couldn't have been more than a very small child when it was released.

  • I love this well posted great memories and beautiful graphics thumbs up

  • Dave Lee Travis - what a twat! And Jimmy "I have VERY dark secrets" Savile.

    GREAT song mind.

  • the hairy cornflake................

  • duran duran brought here. i love their version even though they do it quite differently. i love the original too. it's just a very strong song at its core

  • One of the great songs of the 1970's! One of my favourite songs ever! And a feel-good song and performance. yeah baby !

  • Great song and great performance by everyone in the band. I loved the way the guitar player reacts in the solo. It seems he saw himself in the monitor and looks genuinely surprised.

  • at least it's a live performance... he forgot the lyrics lol.

  • Best song ever... The guitar solo looks fake though...

  • Best song ever...

  • This song is so unlike any song I've heard before. The breaks are awkward, but it works perfectly and make the song beautifully unique. It slightly reminds me of some if David Bowie's music, but only slightly. I love it. Anyway, whenever I see the name of the band, I automatically see "Steve Harvey" first, lol.

  • ASHES TO ASHES - DAVID BOWIE

  • Probably THE most perfect pop song of all time!! They way its put together is about as good as it gets. If you listen to the studio recording its the blueprint of how to put together the perfect song........great stuff Steve Harley

  • Superb song. The lyrics if you read what it's about it's pretty damning,

  • Lead guitarist: 1. Looks like ginger dude from full monty. 2. dosen't look like he is the same band (meaning the clothes he is wearing)

  • What more can you say Steve Harley the best of his time,Make Me Smile, Juudy Teen.

So many memories great times, thank you Steve they still sound awesome.

  • Sebastian is also one of the classics of this age, but don't forget the provocative 'Judy Teen' a great song for the small club housed in a room at the back of the Pub...

  • Quite simply, the best pop song ever. And @brods73, this guy has got scores of them and tours them around Europe and the UK every year.

  • bought the single when it came out Great Song,so cockney !

  • Awesome song!!

  • the only good song the band did but what a classic...

  • @brods73 Heh. It's not even their best song. Sebastian is.

  • I'm 16 and was most definitely born in the wrong era...

  • 33 people make me mad!!!!!!!!!!!

  • check out "Mr Soft" not quite the classic status of come up and see me, but very good nonetheless
