Ha...I was researching frame rates of different cameras and came across this video. About halfway through, I recognized you...you helped me back in Tucson with the film festival I ran. Ha, good to see your still 'behind the camera'.
hey! so..assuming you know ure way around cameras. is the p2 a good option if I'm trying to get a film look? I hear the sony red is a night mare on set (over heats etc) but the p2 is a decent option. are there 35 MM adaptors? is the Depth of Field good? any thoughts would be most appreciated. I have an account here, so u can email me or post. I'll def. keep in touch.
Several things -- If you light your scene properly, if you desire that soft film look, and you are NOT looking to buy a "videography" camera, then the HVX/Letus 35 adaptor is indeed an excellent film setup. ...and in the grand scheme of things, it's affordable too. Relative to the Red setup, anyway.
Search You Tube: "Letus Extreme Panasonic HVX200 Nikon"
Well in my opinion, the XH A1 has a better look to it, almost like RED footage, only 1080p with film grain. only downside is a little chromatic aberration on the footage, which is disappointing... But don't forget that if you want to record to digital on the hvx, p2 cards are expensive as crap. (well, then again, that'd be cheap...) Also, the hvx's variable framerate is only supported up to 720p, so it will only look good on Youtube.
Is the HVX200 a good camera for filming kiddies skating?
I mean, I read past comments and you said if you can't control lighting in the day, it might not be the best camera. Any other suggestions camera-wise? My price range is around the same as the HVX200, so yeah. Package deal info would be niceee too! THANKS.
Hmmmm -- where to begin. If the majority of your filming will be cats and kids ice skating home-video-style, then the HVX200 is a bit much. On the flip-side, if it's an outdoor rink on a sunny day, the HVX has great manual controls to help get proper exposure, such as ND filters and an easy-peasy iris control. If you want a sweet family camera with HD capabilities, check out the Panasonic GH1 for half the cost of the HVX. :)
You pretty much hit it on the essentials -- lighting, obviously is the main element in filmmaking, followed by DoF and camera movement. Polarizers are nice. If you're buying lenses and an adaptor, you'll also need a focus puller...I suggest getting that from Red Rock as well as their lens gears. 3 gears are $150 and the focus assist is 3 times that with a whip. If you want a fisheye to attach to an adaptor similar to the Letus or Red Rock, make sure it's a fast lens! 1.8 if you can find it.
None of your lenses should be slower than 2f when using a lens adaptor. Without the lens adaptor, you might be able to find a Century Optics fisheye -- I believe you'll need an 82mm filter threaded lens.
You should consider DTE's. You can capture 100's of gbs of video as opposed to the 8, 16, or 32 gb P2's. Plus all you'd need is a firewire port to capture, instead of a P2 card reader.
Is this a question? If so...I cannot post an HD version because I deleted this test footage right away without exporting it properly for You Tube. At teh time, You Tube was just Beta-testing HD. Sorry.
Happy Memorial Day Weekend, everybody! This weekend marks the start of my second FEATURE FILM with the HVX200 and Letus Extreme 35 adaptor. The first film is called "Trade In" if you would like to look it up on IMDB. The film that we're just starting is called "D*I*Y" (Do It Yourself). Google Directors Seat Productions if you want to see more about the film or to see the equipment we're using. VERY VERY EXCITING!!!! :)
The only way to use lenses is to get a lens adaptor such as the Letus, Redrock or Brevis. Century Optics does make "screw-on" lenses, but I don't think they are the type you are speaking of. Prime lenses will need one of the adaptors mentioned above.
Depends on what you're goals are with your camera -- if you're doing wedding videography, I'd stay away from the HVX200. However, If you're making narrative films or music videos, this is definitely the camera you'll want. :)
It's not a great low-light camera and weddings are often low light. In auto-mode, it's a little slow, whereas the DVX will instantly find focus, the HVX takes a second longer to find focus. Generally, Sony's are good documentary & videography cameras and the Panny's and the Canon's hold up better for digital filmmaking. WOW -- There's a generalization for ya! Here come the responses, I'm sure.
I think it's down to the HVX or EX1. The sony has rolling shutter issues but a larger sensor, the HVX is more versitile camera in some ways. JVC and Canon have some tempting options too.
Great question!!!! it's 4:3 because this was my first time using the camera (right out of the box), and thus it was also my first time using the Final Cut Pro workflow. I was in a hurry because I was excited, so i didn't bother with a second export in 16X9. :)
It's a terrible low-light camera -- to shoot EXT night scenes, you'll still want to use HMI's. That is my biggest complaint about the camera is the noise in low-light situations.
I hope you enjoyed my demo reel above! Thanks for watching! Camera, lighting, grip, video & filmmaking equipment rental available in Tucson Arizona. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! if you would like to view some footage that was shot with the HVX, Letus, and Nikon lenses, type "Wash Panasonic" in You Tube's search window.
Oh yeah... last week, our HVX & Letus Extreme 35mm lens adaptor took a tumble on a concrete floor -- we had to replace it with a Brevis for the following 2-days and man, the two adaptors don't even compare. Edge-to-edge sharpness. Inverted image. Vignetting were all issues with the Brevis. If you're looking for an adaptor, look no further than Letus!!! I'll be accepting sympathy cards for the fallen Letus and HVX until June.
I shot this in 720pn (High Def, which is 16X9)... I compressed it weirdly to be technical and then You Tube stretched it vertically in the 4:3 ratio as it appears today. Whaaaa!!!! Oh well. Alternate compressions solve this You Tube problem...I'm just too lazy to re-post it. :)
hey man, cool footage.Just wanna say how cool it is you answer the questions people ask. Not many do. Thinking of getting a HVX200 myself. Keep up the good work
Thanks! While I totally love the HVX200 and its workflow, it might be worth your while to investigate the Scarlet (made by Red)...it will be a higher quality camera and a bit cheaper than the HVX. It is scheduled for release early 2009 if you can wait that long. The downside I see to it is that it appears to be more of a "point-and-click" camera with less manual capabilities. You'll also eat up more hard drive space (I think). Just throwing that out there.... :)
I believe the shutter speed is 1/48 -- This was the first hour that I used the camera out of the box, so I really wasn't paying attention to all the specs. Factory setting vs. the manual settings within that first hour were being played with a LOT because I was having fun!!!
If you look at the end of this video, you will see the 48 frames per second shot vs. the 12 frames per second shot --- you'll notice that the slow-mo shot is way underlit because you lose a couple stops in that variable frame rate. Anyway, I use Final Cut -- I have no idea how to turn on a PC, let alone edit in Avid. :) Good luck!
let me first thank you for sharing your knowlede with people who wants it. For me i would really love to know the capturing and editing procedure as is software hardware for this lovely spot.
9) With the new Final Cut Suite, you use the "Log and Transfer" window to import your footage. With older versions of Final Cut Pro, you us "import P2"
10) Start editing...with the new version of Final Cut Pro, simply drag a clip to the timeline and it will automatically format your sequence to whatever format the clip was shot in. For example, if you shot in 720PN, your timeline settings will adjust to 720.
I would only suggest purchasing the HVX200 for filmmaking purposes and if you're using lighting. If your intent is to do videography such as weddings or live events where you cannot control lighting this is NOT the best camera for that type of stuff. For filmmaking, music videos, and commercials where you control the set, it is awesome!
Accessories: lots of hard drive space, Rode NTG-1 mic, the best tripod you can afford, Letus Extreme with Nikkor lenses, Lowel DV Creator 55 light kit.
In spring 2009, Red will release the "Scarlet" That's what you'll want to wait for. If you need it before then, The HVX with the Letus Lens adaptor is still the way to go. :)
Panasonic hpx170 or Panny hmc150... Check out dvxuser for more info... I love my hvx!!! But the other two address many needed upgrades..such as low light performance image flip, vector scope buiilt in ..
You can, but not in High Def -- it would be wasteful to purchase this camera and not use a P2 Card...you may as well save 3-4 thousand dollars and buy a MiniDV camera, not a high def camera.
Huge difference! For starters, P2 is not tape, it is basically 4 SD cards smashed together into a credit card sized device. it records separate files for each time you hit the start/stop record button. Thus, eliminating shuttling through hours of tape and batch capturing.
Wow. The picture quality of this camera is amazing. How big are the video files though? I'm contemplating whether I should get this one or the canon. Congrats!
So, what do ya think of the P2?

You've been very helpful!
As for the HVX, what are the basic essentials I need to buy seperately? P2 cards, Tripod, Mic, and Bag are what I know I need I suppose.
And I'm actually gonna use the camera for filming movies and such, more professional I hope.
As for a lens attachment, do you know if its possible to use a 'fisheye' with adapters?
THANKS!!!!!!!

1) Capture your footage onto a P2 card
2) On your computer, create a new folder and rename it "GoodShotReel1" or something like that.
3) insert your P2 card into an internal OR external PCMCI card slot on your computer
4) drag the "contents" folder AND the "Text" file to your "GoodShotReel1" folder
denekes 4 years ago
5) Launch Final Cut Pro
6) Go through your typical setup procedure by setting scratch discs, etc.
7) create a new bin and title it "GoodShotReel1"

moviemaster6 4 years ago
Huge difference! For starters, P2 is not tape, it is basically 4 SD cards smashed together into a credit card sized device. it records separate files for each time you hit the start/stop record button. Thus, eliminating shuttling through hours of tape and batch capturing.

Wow. The picture quality of this camera is amazing. How big are the video files though? I'm contemplating whether I should get this one or the canon. Congrats!
