That is gear rollover noise you have at idle. Get rid of the 10W-30 because the detergents will eat your synchro's, replace it with 2 gal of 30 wt synthectic ATF.
@fordtangfanatic The bellhousing patterns and gear artios are different. I've heard of people installing a gasser ZF5 in a diesel but the gear spread is not ideal.
@PepperDarlington It is possible but it has to be from a 460 for the bell housing to be even remotely the same size. Any small block or I-6 trans will not work with a 460 or diesel engine (6.9,7.3, 7.3 PSD) because the bell housing is too small
@FORDGTFANATIC Yes it is a 4x4 ZF5. I don't have a video camera currently but if your wondering the rattle is pretty loud in 4 lo. Right around 5-600 rpm is where mine rattles bad, everything sounds normal. In 4 lo its common to idle along in the 5-600 rpm range though, and it sounds pretty bad. Its normal though, and won't cause any problems.
I had a worn injection pump and mismatched injectors in this video, after replacing all of that it quieted down quite a bit. Now you can just barely tell its got a SMF from outside or inside, most people wouldn't notice anything different.
That seems pretty prevelant. I need to replace the DMF on my truck. How loud is that rattle compared to engine noise when you are just standing next to it?
It is bolted together, welding would likely cause it to be out of balance. The noise is the gears chattering against each other due to the torque spike created by a higher compression diesel at low speeds. Normal, and not a problem.

@TWeatherford88 any idea if the zf-5 speed from a gas engine will fit and work with the diesel?

@FORDGTFANATIC No it wont.
