  • aaaahhhh memories of my childhood are beginning to surface again! :D

  • "huboodi"

  • What? No reflection on the ground stones? You march into a store young man and buy a 3dfx Voodoo 2 accelerator in this instant! :)

  • @Szederp Ok :(

    =D

  • @Szederp

Still got one lying around me thinks, wonder if it will fit next to my 6950 xD

  • This was the equivalent of Crysis of its time (tech wise, years ahead of the rest), always loved how badass the intro is, showing off the engine, with the music and all, is quite impressive even today. Unreal 1 was and still is one of the most atmospheric games ever made, it took you to another world, a ride from start to finish.

  • Way ahead of it's time. Needed a good Pentium II rig to run it back then :-) I remember sitting and watching that waterfall on the first map for ages.

  • I was always scared when I played unreal :D

  • Freaking awesome game! I played it so often and I'm still!

  • haboo-gee!

  • oh man, I love this game. Such atmosphere. First time I got it and installed it and played it my jaw dropped when I came out of the crashed spaceship. Such a good game.

  • The name of the developper sums up this game very well - epic mega game.

  • Graphics, gaming, sound were awesome for its time, one of the best FPS ever.

  • Gawd I used love this game! It's what started it all for me. Many many great hours spent online.

  • Nice, but thats just actuallty a preview of a map, its not an intro man...

  • @NerfStriker2010

    it is intro

  • officially the best game ever and i loved it so much to bad i lost the disk i want it back! dam

  • @ImaGamer4Ever You can download it, still works nowadays... always good for a replay

  • EPIC music.

  • Looks like using this is using direct3d. I remember the Glide version for 3dfx cards the walkway area you see at the start was shiny and reflective.

  • I love all sounds from this game

  • I miss this game!! I used to play it with my friends everyday :D

    Great memories =)

  • I remember this game and running it on a AMD K6-2 450MHz with a ATI Rage Fury 16mb video card. I bought a Voodoo3 2000 (16mb I think) and I was able to run the graphics at almost max with a small GPU overclock.

The thing I loved most about the original was the Infiltration mod. I chose Unreal's INF over CS1.5 anyday. The graphics were better and so was the frame rate if I remember.

  • Unbeatable in terms of Atmosphere and Music! Such a great Game!

  • and i guess this one was one of the last games that used module music

  • Too bad, no console -version...

N64 would perhaps been able to reproduce this...

  • by far, the best pc game music for its day

  • I will always remember iddqd and idkfa :D

  • @steiktur2000 There is even a blue T-Shirt with a white, simple "iddqd" printed on front. I think this is something :D

  • @Brummbrummquietsch lol IDCLIP so you could go through the face and see John Carmack's head on a spike, oh the the memories never end!

  • @steiktur2000

    idbeholda , idclip :)

  • how'd you start moving around in it???

  • @matthewdoucette I used cheats via the console!

  • @Brummbrummquietsch ah cool... what cheat does that?!

  • @matthewdoucette Puh, should be "walk" after bringing up the console with ^, when I do remember correctly. If you want the whole package, just google it, those cheats are very common :)

  • What a game! The first original game i bought! Awesome purchase!

  • Was my first 3D action game... Started playing it when I was like 7... was scared to hell when playing this!! Unreal FTW

  • This game is so classic!! I still have this game ahh

  • the game of my childhood 10/10, you cant grade perfection :)

  • 5/5

  • whoa, where can I download this again? :D

  • @howardlol Its very cheap to come by - when I'm not mistaken there is also a Unreal Pack or something like that with Unreal, Return To Na Pali und UT.

  • @Brummbrummquietsch yes there is a pack called Unreal Anthology it has unreal+return to na pali, unreal tournament, unreal 2 and unreal tournament 2004. you can get it for $20 in the gamers choice pack.

  • Hm, I wish Epic continued to make SP versions of Unreal rather than focusing on the Tournament. This game seemed rather revolutionary for its time - only problem was that Half-Life had taken the spotlight.

  • So basically what this nutcase wants is games with an emphasis on story and terrible graphics.

He openly came out and said it with no shame at all! lol

  • Wow looks cool too bad i was only like 1 when it came out :( btw i really dont think that intro is good i think system shock 2 has the best 1

  • @colman44 Are you sure? Back in the year this game came out (1998 when I'm not mistaken) and in my opinion its still one of the best (even THE best imo) intros ever created. Especially the music... daaaamn, sweet!

  • Yeah... I guess its pretty cool watching it again... Wow wait scratch that its awesome!

Dang I wish i was old enough to experience that gaming glory.

  • This game is fucking awesome! especially for the year it was made

  • @MooseCannon

And in my (and most other's) opinion still one of the best games out there. An Evergreen! I mean, definitely great story, huge, brilliant levels... a true masterpiece of gaming history. Just like Half-Life, Thief 1/2 und Doom 1/2.

  • I love this game, I've startedto play it all over again. This is still the best shooter game ever!

  • I played the game ! The first one is the scariest!

  • lol u're so gay

  • Pretty sucky GFX. Why? 1. Always, if in software mode, disable fast translucency, enable smoothing, coronas and fog.

    2. Preferably use any more powerfull driver, like D3D or OGL for modern cards

    3. Install the recent patch, like 227 for Unreal / UnrealGold, or, if you prefer the older patches (227f doesn't work with RtNP for example), use OMP as it replaces the outdated video and audio drivers with the ones updated for the modern hardware for optimized performance and features like S3TC.

  • dude, this game is from like mid 90's. maybe early 90's. the engine used for this game paved the way what we have today.

  • 1998, the engine first run at the state closest to the completion was in 1997. Should you be able to actually read posts, you should notice that the sucky-GFX problem is not the engine fault, but the incorrect setup that's cropping the very most of it's features.

  • So freaking awesome. Is there a place to download the soundtrack?

  • Well, certainly it is. When I am not completely mistaken... arent the soundtrack files also in the folder of the game itself in a strange format, but playable by VLC or stuff? Even when I am mistaken, with googling you should find it. Its a very old (and popular!) game, so somwhere it IS downloadable ;)

  • If you have the game then you can go into the music folder and listen to the music files with vlc media player.

  • I should've mentioned that I have actually tested it so I know it works. Enjoy :)

  • I recently bought this (and three other Unreal games) over Steam. I don't play it much currently after I beat story mode recently, (But I will again eventually) but IS still play the UT games Bought UT and UT04 over Steam bought UT3 at a store. Right now I have 5 Unreal games installed on my computer... but I guess you can call it 5 and 1/2 due to my U1 game being the Gold edition with Return to Na Pali included

  • nice one thx for putting it up

  • Ah yes, this game... I remember it. Bizzare and dark, this game was a lot of fun. It's a shame modern games aren't as atmospheric as old ones.

  • It's not just that, I think it's cause people get older. I used to play this game when I was like 12, now I'm 24, and new games with beautiful graphics.. well they don't capture my attention any more, I've become desensitized to this stuff.

I think I'm not the only one. Would be nice to be so impressionable like a kid again

  • I don't think it has something to do with the age, I believe it's all about the taste and its complete absence. Old games were made with enthusiasm, with inspiration, the game makers couldn't rely on graphics back then because the technology was highly limited, so they had to create other things that we don't see today - a good story, realism and gameplay. Modern technologies make game making much easier and since you make them in months with good graphics why bother and make a decent story?...

  • @ExClUr Actually, modern games are more difficult to make, and take more man hours than older games, even with the level of technology available today.

Team sizes and development budgets have increased massively since the days of the original Unreal.

  • Considering how worse the games got it is truly sad, with all that given information.

  • @ExClUr Personally I'd disagree with the view that games have gotten worse. The technology available today allows the creation of game experiences that would have been completely impossible a decade ago.

Obviously it depends on your own personal taste, but I think it's hard to argue that modern games aren't better than the original Unreal.

  • When I said the games had gotten worse I did not mean the technology level these games had been made with but the overall quality of the games as such, with their main quality elements being gameplay that depends on the story and characters considerably. For instance, many modern game have TOO MUCH of unneeded effects while they have no realism. There are many tastes for the games. I belong to those who like story and realism above graphics.

What are your most favourite games and game genres?

  • Absolutely agree. Modern games have TOO MUCH visual detail. Looking at Unreal 3 engine, there is so many pixels of different color on the screen that it's hardly possible to tell not-so-nearby powerup from vehicle from enemy.

  • How is "too much visual detail" a bad thing? If anything, the majority of console games are not detailed enough. (Zelda TP, Monster Hunter series, Haze, etc.)

You need to look harder if that is the best example you could come up with.

  • I hate to break it to you, but improved graphics are the only way to reach realism in games. You have just annihilated the point you were trying to make.

  • Ahhh, if they JUST improved the graphics... Along with this improved graphics we get totally unrealistic story and unrealistic action. Back in the day when graphics were not all that good the game makers had to somehow attract the potential player - those were the times when storyline was being written by people whose imagination and reality feel were better than those of a immature teen. Today we had good graphics so "why bother about the story and overall realism, gamers will buy it anyway"...

  • lol. I never claimed that graphics where the most important aspect of games. You imagined it.

Unlike you, I do not play games for "stories".

If videogames were judged by their storyline then games like Espgaluda and Street Fighter (Having little to no story, but are excellent games) would be terrible. Don't you have books and movies for that? Why tarnish what makes this medium great?

I'd like to hear you elaborate with some examples of "imaginative story-games ".

  • You implied that graphics is the most important aspect of a game to you. You don't care for the story anyway, what does it leave out, then?

Street Fighter is terrible example since it's just a bald fighting game. Why don't you bring tetris as an example?

Here is my example: Dungeon Keeper 1 is a much better game than Dungeon Keeper 2. Rage of Mages 1&2 are enjoyable. Odium. Fallout 1&2. Dune 2000. Heart of Darkness. LBA 1&2. Maybe you'd prefer games like Bloodrayne over them, I don't know.

  • It's a GREAT example because it proves your theory of "awesome story=awesome game" is shit. I'm not going to spell it out for you, moron.

And who gives a shit if I didn't use Tetris as an example? Oh that's right, using a mediocre game would put my argument on the fence.

Little Big Adventure? Are you kidding me?

  • @wmotamedi03 It depends on why exactly you play games. If you put fighting games on the same level with those like Baldur's Gate or any other that require at least a bit of brain cells and patience to master then I guess we're dealing with one might moron here. Seriously, dude, get a version of tetris with splendid graphics and claim this game to be MAJESTIC.

Let me guess - you're not hell of a reader, either. Comic books don't count.

  • "You implied that graphics is the most important aspect of a game to you."

Do you understand a word I'm saying? Dense fagot.

"You don't care for the story anyway, what does it leave out, then?"

    That makes no sense.

It's a good thing I cleared this up. People were starting to think you actually knew what you were talking about. lol.

  • @wmotamedi03 I read yours and exclur's dispute and I must say that all you did was using sophistry in order to back up your ill-minded claims. All your "that makes no sense" is your personal inability to understand anything more complex that 2+2. Your capabilities of structured logical thinking are laughable, and subtlety is something of a mystery to you. I know you think you're a wisdom guru and insulting people is your way of proving that but all you are is in fact stupid wannabe kid.

  • "Back in the day when graphics were not all that good the game makers had to somehow attract the potential player"

Somehow? You have no idea what you're on about. How about making a game that didn't suck? A sharp contrast from the games you probably play. Yeah, who cares if the game is dull; just slap a "story" on it and it will exceed ExCIUr's standards.

  • You think that games I like suck? Maybe you think Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil 2 suck, especially if you compare them to Silent Hill: Homecoming and Resident Evil 5 whatever, with excellent graphics, stupid matrix-like action and completely clishe storyline. Yeah, I do like games for their stories, music and atmosphere but not for their graphics. If I cared for graphics why should I play games, anyway? Real life has the best graphics.

  • The same is with movies. Old movies had no or very limited special effects so the movies had to rely on REAL decorations and stunts. That's why filmmaking took much longer and the made movies were much more realistic - you couldn't do impossible stunts since no CG was available. Today you get stupid movies with no plot and people flying around doing impossible things which discomforts the viewer since one subconsciously detects the unnaturality of what's shown on the screen.

  • "Would be nice to be so impressionable like a kid again" - oh, I'm sure you can be impressed, you just need to find a good game as the impression source. It's not your or mine fault modern games lack that. I love old games and hate new ones (at least in their majority) but when I find an old game that is new to me I like it for what it is, not because it's old. And if it's a bad game - than it's a bad game.

  • Best SP game ever. Makes me shiver when I remember my first play. Stared literaly for 10mins and couldnt believe it. Unfortunately they spoiled it with Unreal 2.

  • Its a shame. The best FPS ever was succeeded by one ot the worst ones. =/

  • Well there's still hope, UT2004 was fairly nice, so if they dont rush they can make decent Unreal 3.

  • why would you have to buy another pc?

  • I am claustrophobic to these games now.

  • damn!! memories!!!! :D

  • Oh yeah! Forever and the best memories of video gaming!

  • Oh man that was so long ago, and yet it still feels like it was the best game ever.

they should do a either a remake of the original (or napali) or a sequel to the first one (Not like Unreal 2)

  • This game is SO epic! An epic game!

  • awesome I'm getting gold package at christmas

  • This is the day you become a real man!

    *lol*

  • ROFL! You`re fight! BTW I few minutes ago I finished the gold pack, including the "Return to Pali" missions pack.

  • darn this brings me back memories when by accident i deleted unreal.i wish i can have this game again.

  • i still play this today.

  • Me too sometimes!

I still wonder why absolute NO game after Unreal managed to have such a cool intro. I mean, ten years passed...? Seems to be a nearly perfect game :-)

  • hahah duuuude.. i loved this game and yes i still remember iddqd idkfa? for doom!! the single player was great too bad the new ones are only about the multiplayer part of it

  • Of course! I still know those cheats - by heart! idclev30, idclip, yipiee!

    Unforgettable!

IDDQD! would be cool as a tattoo.

    On the forehead :D :D

  • Oh, forgot to reply to the other thing *stupid me*

Yes, thats true. Unreal is a all time classic, U2 (never played it, only seen it) is a major blow. Unreal 3 with a great singleplayer campaign would be awesome.

Could be a killer for Crysis in my opinion.

(If done right and not ruined like U2)

  • man i remember playing this game when i was like 6 it was fun!

  • wonderfull game, and amazing graphics!

hey i didn't know you can play in the intro hahah

  • Me neither!

Well, actually I just fell out the intro, so I thought I ran around, grab the mini and do some weird stuff *harharH

  • quanti ricordi!!! è bellissimo!!!

  • best game ever

  • Absolutely and undisputed. The intro plus the music in the background. I just wonder why not ONE single game could beat that intro or be at least roughly that creative. FarCry features also such a "flying intro" when I'm not mistaken.

  • Brings back fond memories.

Epic is now a shell of its once former "epic" self (pun intended).

  • I loved the music in the intro. Really set the mood for what was to come.

  • Oh yes; one of the best intros of all time and still unbeaten in my opinion.

  • this game was so awesome - me and my boys used to have LAN parties when i was in the air force in Turkey - i miss this time in pc gaming - not the same anymore

  • My words! The new games are mostly visual wonders but the gameplay... well, got lost over the time. UNREAL's from 1998 and after ten years its still one fantastic game. Couldnt say that about all games...
