restricting themselves to a false ideal: that art needs to have a deep meaning, it's full of shit. Macarthy, Warhol, Guston, Barney, of course Duchamp, are all pioneers of this. I understand if people don't enjoy it, but to be so offended is to misunderstand it and seem rather pretentious. Remember, it's not the artists that make their work famous and full of interpretation, it's the critics who are pulling ideas out of their asses and trying to look like they know what they're talking about.
Dude. You guys who are mad about his work are falling into the trap that the average person does. The effect of his art is supposed to be offensive. Ever hear of John Waters? The raising of "bad taste" or in Koons case, kitsch, to art. The whole point is it's a game, and it's supposed to be satirical. His show at Versailles was extremely smart. Versailles is basically a long standing example of what Koons artwork is perpetuating in a farcical manner! Get it? Those who take art so seriously are
Everything this guy says is a crock of shit and he knows it. I saw a documentary on this prick years ago, and he admitted to becoming an artist because he wanted to be immensely rich. He was a New York accountant and his richest clients were artists, so that's what he changed his career to. He has never gotten his hands dirty actually making something; he is a fraud, just like Damien Hirst. When will the world wake up and see the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes?
I'm all for artists being successful but I wish it was the ones who had something to say. Yes his work is cute and kitsch and cute and kitsch are a part of society... ok I get it. But he doesn't add anything to what is already there, he doesn't say anything except here's cute and kitsch. He doesn't make me see something in a new way. There is no insight. Sure, you can have a visceral feeling standing next to a Koons but you can have a visceral feeling standing on a subway platform.
@NotBen78 that is the point thats what he adds, with everything else you see in art you expect some kind of social comentary, or some subversive nature because we are taught to think there is something wrong with the world, maby koons is saying its ok to enjoy things as they are. the concept of morality has moved on with koons
I don't care for his work either, but just the fact that all these commenters are reacting so strongly should say a little something. I think the only "bad art" would be art that illicits no reaction. It's like these kitsch pieces at Versailles. It doesn't have to be beautiful, its trying to make people respond or react on some level. If you're uncomfortable then it's working.
@Zatki Meh. My negative reaction is solely based on the absurdity of his prices when compared to the actual artistic merits of the piece. I think that's what most people respond to...not the actual work, but how incongruous it is with Versailles and the ridiculousness that such crap would be given such an honored venue. I don't think that's the work challenging people, I think that's the work failing to legitimize its own existence.
Koons never has any fear as an artist because he is not one. The biggest poseur the art world has ever seen. He is a plant manager, not an artist. The bullshit spewing from his mouth during this video is proof. Young artists...watch this and know exactly what not to do or be. What a prick.
Jeff's "work" is not "Art".... they are just clever objects... that's all....everyone, even if you are an art neophyte, don't feel insecure about rejecting this type of "work"... even though you might be a little ignorant of the "game", your instincts are right... this is recycled crud.
Patti Smith, the legendary rocker, can't stand Koons. She called his "art" litter on the earth. She's right. It's just a prime example of the dumbing down of taste going on in this world.
When I heard sthat he had his "work" displayed in the Palace of Varsailles, I was sickened. That's like someone taking a neon sign from downtown las vegas and plopping it smack in the middle of Windsor Castle.

@Aussiemarco he is not a fraud, he is honest. the people who put art on a pedistal and involve themselves in the hierachy of art are the fraudsters

Charlie Rose: Is there a consistent message that runs through the things we see? Is there a common denominator?
Jeff Koons: Well I think were I took the readymade, within my own work, was really getting more involved at the viewer as the readymade.
CR: Yeah...
JK: And, and more about the relationship with the viewer and maybe trying to deal as objectively as possible with my work.

when i saw this in Versailles the last time i went there, i was shocked -.- such a cr...
to me that's not art - he may call it art but it shouldn't be exposed at a monumental place like the chateau de Versailles.

THANK YOU! I know art is expression, but what the hell is he expressing? It's obnoxious as a vegas billboard.
