However, Northern Irish unionists refer to themselves as British, and Northern Ireland as part of Britain, and refer to Great Britain as the mainland. Therefore, Britain is generally considered to be a synonym for the UK, while Great Britain is the name of the island - so you're wrong basically.

British is the demonym for people from the United Kingdom, and the two terms are not interchangeable unless you are stupid. Unionists can say what they want but Northern Ireland as a whole considers itself Irish and Northern Irish as well as British.
