I love the mountain gorilla because they are intelligent, capable of humanlike emotion, peaceful and incredibly powerful creatures. I hate being human for many reasons: We destroy, pollute, kill, overtake, overpopulate, cause war and we create horrific diseases and we are unnecessarily greedy. We make trophies out of animals, hold them in captivity and poke fun at them. And we have even enslaved members of our own kind. Humanity is a disease out of control.
@rdrom70 i see your point, and its sad, but even apes such as the chimpanzee are prone to unecessary violence. They all have their own personalities, but even some in the wild attack other chimps over very human-like matters like territory or food.
Kinda makes me think.....like if the bible is true, and only humans get "saved"...What about these animals who are so intelligent and have emotions also....shouldnt they also become saved, or is this just a world without a god...
why does everyone slit up the pan genus but not pongo or gorilla. and everyone forgets about homo.
great ape is a family with 4 genuses. pongo (bornean and sumatran orangutans), gorilla (western and eastern), pan (chimpanzee and bonobo), and homo (humans).
there are 7 species of great apes, 4 genuses. i dont get why people always group the two pongos and two gorillas together as one but separate the pan speices. and gibbons are lesser apes, a different family with like 30 species or somethin
How tragic, how indescribably tragic, that these creatures are in such peril from our species, homo sapiens. Shall they ultimately be casualties of our cruel and bloody dominion of this planet? Oh that a world would come to pass where apes and men could live together in harmony. That remains my dream; may it become a reality!
Chimpanzees are extremely aggressive, Bonobos like Gorillas and Orangtans are extremely peaceful. Ironic we are closer related to the Bonobo than the Chimpanzee.
@liantlian Considering we share 99% of their DNA, I would say the human diet is the reason. Chimpanzees eat foods high in sugar, fiber, water, and vitamins, and humans eat food high in protein and fat. I've seen some people who eat the way chimps do on youtube here (look up "raw food diet" if you're interested), and although they are extremely strong compared to their body weight, they are very skinny. I think the reason is because no-one is as physically active as chimps.
@daregularperson But thier is somthing that makes us diffrent its wierd but i think i know what ! o and chimps eat meat btw if you didnt know they desire meat over anything
Humans are great apes as well the 4 great apes are Chimpanzees, Gorillas, Orangutan, and HUMANS.... I guess were no longer good enough to make the list anymore :[
Humans are not apes. That's why they are looking for a missing link between humans and apes. Sorry to ruin your quest for fire with facts, but please feel free to fling poo and pick nits.
Yes, we are. We ARE within the group we call apes, though we split off long ago from them. Also, we're not looking for a link between humans and apes, we are looking for intermediates between our common ancestor with the other great apes (as well as that common ancestor). Missing link is such a stupid term.
Maybe less than a chimp with more upper body strength than a human, but maybe not stronger than our legs. But that Gibbon could kill you with its scream!!!
I just read a book called Hurt Go Happy about a deaf girl who befriends a man who owns a baby orphan chimpanzee who can do sign language. It's a really good book- but so sad.
apes are so amazing... Genetically, they share 98.4% of human DNA.
Fantastic descriptions on the side. I find it incredible that even though our DNA is very identical, human minds have developed much more than the other apes. I'm hoping to work with them in my future.
