I see the avatar state as being more of a defense mechanism then something used to fight, Aang seems to use it only when he is frightened or in great pain but thats why its so dangerous cause it happens when he's more vulnerable.

Who would need Avatar state to even blow up a whole continent. You just have to be the strong bender and go around the edges of the continent and use earth bending to walled in everything and leave a small opening.
