there's a special coating on the screen that prevents from scratching and finger prints. adding abrasives and harsh chemicals like windex removes the coating and damages the screen more than cleaning it.

Exactly right. You should never, NEVER use Windex or other chemicals on your ipod, iphone or ipad. These chemicals have a tendency to break down the coating on the touch screens.

The best way is a clean, slightly damp cloth taking care to avoid any moisture nears openings. Thats it. Period.
