There was a story like this in the original novel (LH on Plum Creek). Only it was locusts, not hail.

Every now and then, I gotta watch this show! I LOVE the wholesomeness of the life's lessons in it. Amazing acting work from everyone envolved. I'll love it as long as I live.

That's right, and he didn't last long. I remember seeing him in an interview not long after he was diagnosed, he looked 15 years older than he did before he got sick.
